Variable Resolution Discretization In The Joint Space, Christopher K. Monson, Kevin Seppi, David Wingate, Todd S. Peterson Dec 2004

Variable Resolution Discretization In The Joint Space, Christopher K. Monson, Kevin Seppi, David Wingate, Todd S. Peterson

Faculty Publications

We present JoSTLe, an algorithm that performs value iteration on control problems with continuous actions, allowing this useful reinforcement learning technique to be applied to problems where a priori action discretization is inadequate. The algorithm is an extension of a variable resolution technique that works for problems with continuous states and discrete actions. Results are given that indicate that JoSTLe is a promising step toward reinforcement learning in a fully continuous domain.

A Bayesian Technique For Task Localization In Multiple Goal Markov Decision Processes, James Carroll, Kevin Seppi Dec 2004

A Bayesian Technique For Task Localization In Multiple Goal Markov Decision Processes, James Carroll, Kevin Seppi

Faculty Publications

In a reinforcement learning task library system for Multiple Goal Markov Decision Process (MGMDP), localization in the task space allows the agent to determine whether a given task is already in its library in order to exploit previously learned experience. Task localization in MGMDPs can be accomplished through a Bayesian approach, however a trivial approach fails when the rewards are not distributed normally. This can be overcome through our Bayesian Task Localization Technique (BTLT).

Single crystals of the lanthanide-containing iridate, disamarium sodium iridium hexaoxide, Sm2NaIrO6, were prepared via high-temperature flux growth and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n and is a double perovskite, consisting of a 1:1 ordered rock-salt-type lattice of corner-shared NaO6 and IrO6 distorted octahedra. Samarium occupies the eightfold coordination site generated by the connectivity of the octahedra.

Hyperbolic Sets That Are Not Locally Maximal, Todd L. Fisher Dec 2004

Hyperbolic Sets That Are Not Locally Maximal, Todd L. Fisher

Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the following topics relating to the structure of hyperbolic sets: First, hyperbolic sets that are not contained in locally maximal hyperbolic sets. Second, the existence of a Markov partition for a hyperbolic set. We construct new examples of hyperbolic sets which are not contained in locally maximal hyperbolic sets. The first example is robust under perturbations and can be constructed on any compact manifold of dimension greater than one. The second example is robust, topologically transitive, and constructed on a 4-dimensional manifold. The third example is volume preserving and constructed on R4. We show that every hyperbolic …

The ZEUS detector has been used to study dissociation of virtual photons in events with a leading proton, γ*p → Xp, in e+p collisions at HERA. The data cover photon virtualities in two ranges, 0.03 < Q2 < 0.60 GeV2 and 2 < Q2 < 100 GeV2, with MX > 1.5 GeV, where MX is the mass of the hadronic final state, X. Events were required to have a leading proton, detected in the ZEUS leading proton spectrometer, carrying at least 90% of the incoming proton energy. The cross section is presented as a function of t, the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, Φ, the azimuthal angle between the positron scattering plane and …

A resonance search has been made in the D*±p∓ invariant-mass spectrum with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 126 pb-1. The decay channels D*+ -→ D0πs+ → (K -π+)πs+ and D*+ → D0πs+ → (K-π+π+π-) πs+ (and the corresponding antiparticle decays) were used to identify D*± mesons. No resonance structure was observed in the D*± p∓ mass spectrum from more than 60 000 reconstructed D*± mesons. The results are not compatible with a report of the H1 Collaboration of a charmed pentaquark, Θc0. © Springer-Verlag / Società Italiana di Fisica 2004.

The dependence of dijet production on the virtuality of the exchanged photon, Q2, has been studied by measuring dijet cross sections in the range 0 ≲ Q2 < 2000 GeV2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.6 pb-1. Dijet cross sections were measured for jets with transverse energy ETjet > 7.5 and 6.5 GeV and pseudorapidities in the photon-proton centre-of-mass frame in the range -3 < jet < 0. The variable xγobs, a measure of the photon momentum entering the hard process, was used to enhance the sensitivity of the measurement to the photon structure. The Q2 dependence of the ratio of low- to high-xγobs events was measured. Next-to-leading-order QCD predictions were found to generally underestimate the low-xγobs contribution relative to that at high xγobs. Monte Carlo models based on leading-logarithmic parton-showers, using a partonic structure for the photon which falls smoothly with increasing Q2, provide a qualitative description of the data. © Springer-Verlag / Società Italiana di Fisica 2004.

The paper uses two years (1997–1999) of data from the North American Land Data Assimilation System at National Centers for Environmental Prediction to analyze the variability of physical variables contributing to the hydrological cycle over the conterminous United States. The five hydrological variables considered in this study are precipitation, top layer soil moisture (0–10 cm), total soil moisture (0–200 cm), runoff, and potential evaporation. There are two specific analyses carried out in this paper. In the first case the principal components of the hydrological cycle are examined with respect to the loadings of the individual variables. This helps to ascertain …

We extend the lower bound in [15] for the outerplanar crossing number (in other terminologies also called convex, circular and one-page book crossing number) to a more general setting. In this setting we can show a better lower bound for the outerplanar crossing number of hypercubes than the best lower bound for the planar crossing number. We exhibit further sequences of graphs, whose outerplanar crossing number exceeds by a factor of log n the planar crossing number of the graph. We study the circular arrangement problem, as a lower bound for the linear arrangement problem, in a general fashion. We …

Modified Quantum Trajectory Dynamics Using A Mixed Wave Function Representation, Sophya Garashchuk, Vitaly A. Rassolov Nov 2004

Modified Quantum Trajectory Dynamics Using A Mixed Wave Function Representation, Sophya Garashchuk, Vitaly A. Rassolov

Faculty Publications

Dynamics of quantum trajectories provides an efficient framework for description of various quantum effects in large systems, but it is unstable near the wave function density nodes where the quantum potential becomes singular. A mixed coordinate space/polar representation of the wave function is used to circumvent this problem. The resulting modified trajectory dynamics associated with the polar representation is nonsingular and smooth. The interference structure and the nodes of the wave function density are described, in principle, exactly in the coordinate representation. The approximate version of this approach is consistent with the semiclassical linearized quantum force method [S. Garashchuk and …

The Use Of A Quartz Crystal Microbalance With Dissipation For The Measurement Of Protein–Protein Interactions: A Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of The Interactions Between Molecular Chaperones, Janice Limson, Odutayo O. Odunuge, Hans Green, Fredrik Höökc, Gregory Blatch

Faculty Publications

Biotechnology research and innovation depends on the ability to understand the molecular mechanisms of biological processes such as protein–protein and protein–ligand interactions. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy is now well established as a quantitative technique for monitoring biomolecular interactions. In this study, we examined the recently developed quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) method as an alternative to SPR spectroscopy to investigate protein–protein interactions, in particular, for chaperone–co-chaperone interactions. In mammalian cells, the Hsp70/Hsp90 organizing protein (Hop) is a co-chaperone required for the association of the molecular chaperones, heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) and heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90). The …

Relaxation To Native Conformation Of A Bond-Fluctuating Protein Chain With Hydrophobic And Polar Nodes, Johan Bjursell, Ras B. Pandey

Faculty Publications

The conformation and dynamics of a protein chain with hydrophobic and polar nodes are examined by the bond-fluctuation model using Monte Carlo simulations on a cubic lattice. The minimal (nearest neighbor) interaction leads to standard (self-avoiding walk) conformation, i.e., the scaling of the radius of gyration Rg with the molecular weight N RgNγ with γ ≃ 3/5/ Specific interactions with longer range and higher strength are needed to approach the native globular conformations with γ < 3/5. Relaxation into the globular ground state shows a weak power-law decay, i.e., Rg ∝ t, α ~ 0.06-0.12.

Resonance-Enhanced Multiphoton Ionization For Real-Time Monitoring Of Trichloroethylene Formed By Degradation Of Tetrachloroethylene Using Zero-Valent Zinc, Kui Chen, Jack E. Pender, John L. Ferry, S. Michael Angel

Faculty Publications

Resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) is investigated as a potential technique for real-time monitoring of selected volatile organochloride compounds (VOCs). In a proof-of-concept experiment, the progress of the reductive-degradation of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) to trichloroethylene (TCE) by zero-valent zinc was monitored by REMPI measurements performed in the headspace above the PCE solution. Two-photon resonant REMPI spectra of TCE and PCE were recorded over the wavelength range 305–320 nm. The concentrations of PCE and TCE in the headspace were monitored by measurement of the ionization signal with 315.64- and 310.48-nm excitation for PCE and TCE, respectively. Calibration curves yielded a linear range of …

How Cellular Movement Determines The Collective Force Generated By The Dictyostelium Discoideum Slug, J. C. Dallon, H. G. Othmer

Faculty Publications

How the collective motion of cells in a biological tissue originates in the behavior of a collection of individuals, each of which responds to the chemical and mechanical signals it receives from neighbors, is still poorly understood. Here we study this question for a particular system, the slug stage of the cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum. We investigate how cells in the interior of a migrating slug can effectively transmit stress to the substrate and thereby contribute to the overall motive force. Theoretical analysis suggests necessary conditions on the behavior of individual cells, and computational results shed light on experimental …

Computing The M = 1 Diocotron Frequency Via An Equilibrium Calculation In Non-Neutral Plasmas, Ross L. Spencer Oct 2004

Computing The M = 1 Diocotron Frequency Via An Equilibrium Calculation In Non-Neutral Plasmas, Ross L. Spencer

Faculty Publications

The m = 1 diocotron mode in non-neutral plasmas has long been thought of as a shifted equilibrium, and its frequency has been approximately calculated in this way by Fine and Driscoll [Phys. Plasmas 5, 601 (1998)]. This article shows that this idea can be coupled with a standard axisymmetric equilibrium calculation on a grid to calculate the frequency of this mode to very high precision including both finite-length and thermal effects, provided that the Debye length is small enough. As the Debye length begins to approach the plasma size not only does the shifted equilibrium calculation fail to predict …

The beauty production cross section for deep inelastic scattering events with at least one hard jet in the Breit frame together with a muon has been measured, for photon virtualities Q2>2 GeV2, with the ZEUS detector at HERA using integrated luminosity of 72 pb-1. The total visible cross section is σbb̄(ep→e jet μX)=40.9±5.7(stat.)-4.4+6. 0(syst.) pb. The next-to-leading order QCD prediction lies about 2.5 standard deviations below the data. The differential cross sections are in general consistent with the NLO QCD predictions; however at low values of Q2, Bjorken x, and muon transverse momentum, and high values of jet transverse …

Polarization Of Nuclear Spins From The Conductance Of Quantum Wires, James A. Nesteroff, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, Vladimir Privman

Faculty Publications

We devise an approach to measure the polarization of nuclear spins via conductance measurements. Specifically, we study the combined effect of external magnetic field, nuclear spin polarization, and Rashba spin-orbit interaction on the conductance of a quantum wire. Nonequilibrium nuclear spin polarization affects the electron energy spectrum making it time dependent. Changes in the extremal points of the spectrum result in time dependence of the conductance. The conductance oscillation pattern can be used to obtain information about the amplitude of the nuclear spin polarization and extract the characteristic time scales of the nuclear spin subsystem.

Mechanical scribing can be employed to create surfaces with recessed features. Through replica molding elastomeric copies of these scribed surfaces are created that function as stamps for microcontact printing. It is shown that this new method for creating masters for microcontact printing can be performed with a computer-controlled milling machine (CNC), making this method particularly straightforward and accessible to a large technical community that does not need to work in a particle free environment. Thus, no clean room, or other specialized equipment is required, as is commonly needed to prepare masters. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry confirms surface pattering by …

Evidence Of Linear Lattice Expansion And Covalency Enhancement In Rutile Tio2 Nanocrystals, Guangshe Li, Juliana Boerio-Goates, Brian F. Woodfield, Liping Li

Faculty Publications

Lattice variations and bonding characteristics in rutile TiO2 nanocrystals were examined by x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. With a reduction in the physical dimensions, rutile TiO2 nanocrystals show a linear lattice expansion and an anomalous covalency enhancement in apparent contradiction to the ionicity increase in BaTiO3 and CuO nanocrystals as reported recently by S. Tsunekawa et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 2000, 85, 3440] and V. R. Palkar et al. [Phys. Rev. B 1996, 53, 2167]. A surface defect dipole model is proposed to explain these physical phenomena in terms of the strong interactions among the surface dipoles that produce …

Jumpstarting Phylogenetic Analysis, Mark J. Clement, Keith A. Crandall, Kevin Seppi, Quinn O. Snell

When a new epidemic strikes, it is often important to determine the relationship between the current organism and others that have been successfully treated previously. The phylogenetic analysis problem generates the most likely family tree for a group of organisms based on DNA sequence data. This process can take a prohibitively long period of time with current algorithms. If trees resulting from prior searches are used to seed the search, correct trees can be found much more quickly. This jumpstarting algorithm can generate superior phylogenetic solutions much more quickly than existing algorithms.

A new imaging system based on a photoinitiated electron transfer chain reaction is reported. Specifically, irradiation of 9,10-dicyanoanthracene (sensitizer) leads to the conversion of Dewar benzene derivatives (reactants) to benzene derivatives (products) within solid polymer films. The mechanism of the reaction may involve chemical amplification with cation radicals ("holes") as the catalytic species. We present herein studies of both molecularly doped polymers and polymers containing Dewar benzene moieties attached to side chains. The refractive index of the materials could be tuned within a narrow range using this photochemical reaction, as demonstrated by the writing of persistent gratings in forced Rayleigh …
