High aspect ratio (AR) CdSe nanorods (NRs) of well-defined sizes were synthesized to optimize the geometries of photovoltaic devices made from these nanorods. Long-range ordering of hexagonal arrays of high AR NRs is achieved by a combination of controlled solvent evaporation and the use of an applied electric field. Regioregular P3HT chains and oligothiophene were functionalized with ligating end-groups to provide contact to the NRs. Vertically oriented assemblies of CdSe NRs functionalized with terthiophene and polythiophene are also obtained. Hexagonal arrays of these nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The inner walls of mitochondria, cabbage leaves, and even the Himalayas are all examples of thin sheets: objects with a thickness much smaller than their length and width. Despite their differences in size and in material composition, similar patterns emerge when sheets are crumpled or forced into a small three-dimensional space. As the compaction progresses, the deformations focus into increasingly sharper features that look like the network of peaks and creases found on the surface of a balled up piece of paper. Reusable software increases programmers' productivity and reduces repetitive code and software bugs. Variance is a key programming language mechanism for writing reusable software. Variance is concerned with the interplay of parametric polymorphism (i.e., templates, generics) and subtype (inclusion) polymorphism. Parametric polymorphism enables programmers to write abstract types and is known to enhance the readability, maintainability, and reliability of programs. Subtyping promotes software reuse by allowing code to be applied to a larger set of terms. Integrating parametric and subtype polymorphism while maintaining type safety is a difficult problem. Dusty Star Formation In Extreme Environments: Galaxies And Galaxy Clusters In The Distant Universe, Stacey Alberts

In this thesis, we present a comprehensive study of the dust-obscured star formation (SF) activity in galaxy clusters out to high redshift using infrared (IR) imaging. Using hundreds of galaxy clusters and wide-field far-IR imaging across nine square degrees, we quantify the average star formation rates (SFRs) out to the distant Universe for mass-limited cluster galaxy samples using stacking. We compare the evolution of this SF activity to field galaxies, finding that the evolution in clusters occurs more rapidly than in the field and clusters have field-like SF approximately nine billion years ago, during an epoch before SF quenching becomes …

Multiple schemes that utilize probabilistic packet marking (PPM) have been proposed to deal with Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks by reconstructing their attack graphs and identifying the attack sources.

In the first part of this dissertation, we present our contribution to the family of PPM-based schemes for Internet Protocol (IP) traceback. Our proposed approach, Prediction-Based Scheme (PBS), consists of marking and traceback algorithms that reduce scheme convergence times by dealing with the problems of data loss and incomplete attack graphs exhibited by previous PPM-based schemes.

This dissertation focuses on the properties of nonlinear waves in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The fundamental model here is the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, the so-called Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation, which is a mean-field description of BECs. The systematic analysis begins by considering the dark-bright (DB)-soliton interactions and multiple-dark-bright-soliton complexes in atomic two-component BECs. The interaction between two DB solitons in a homogeneous condensate and at the presence of the trap are both considered. Our analytical approximation relies in a Hamiltonian perturbation theory, which leads to an equation of motion of the centers of DB-soliton interacting pairs. The accurate estimation of an individual’s usual dietary intake is important since the estimates are essential to uncover the diet-disease relationships. This study explores a more accurate method to estimate an individual’s latent value of usual dietary intake when it is repeatedly measured using a 24-hour dietary recall (24HR) and seven day dietary recall (7DDR), accounting for random measurement error and bias. The performance of the (empirical) predictor of subject’s latent value obtained under the finite population mixed model (FPMM) framework is compared with those obtained under the usual mixed model and the measurement error model through a simulation study. …

This thesis describes the synthesis and applications of multifunctional, hydrophilic polymers consisting of a methacrylate backbone and zwitterionic phosphorylcholine (PC) pendent groups, prepared by free radical polymerization of the zwitterionic monomer, 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC). Advances in polymer chemistry, applied to PC polymers, allowed for the preparation of well-defined structures with controlled molecular weight, narrow polydispersity, and facile incorporation of functional comonomers, giving breadth to the range of materials accessible for different applications. This dissertation presents the first direct detection of pp solar neutrinos within Borexino, the underground liquid-scintilator detector located at the Gran Sasso National Labratory(LNGS) in Italy, designed to measure the interaction of neutrinos through neutrino-electron elastic scattering. The rate of scattering in Borexino from the pp solar neutrino spectrum is measured to be 155 +/- 16(stat) +/- 13(sys) counts per day per 100 tonnes. With this measurement we are able to rule out the no oscillation hypothesis at the 2-sigma C.L. and the results agree with Standard Solar Model predictions within 1.1-sigma. It is notoriously far more challenging to write parallel programs correctly and efficiently than sequential ones because of the wide range of concurrency errors and performance problems. In this thesis, I developed a series of runtime systems and tools to combat concurrency errors and performance problems of multithreaded programs. The first system, Dthreads, automatically ensures determinism for unmodified C/C++ applications using the pthreads library without requiring programmer intervention and hardware support. In bulk heterojunction (BHJ) thin film organic photovoltaics (OPV), morphology control is critical to obtain good device efficiency. Nanoscale phase separation that creates bicontinuous interpenetrating structure on a size scale commensurate with exciton diffusion length (~10 nm) is thought to be the ideal morphology. Results obtained from this work indicate that morphology can be affected by chemical structure of the polymer, processing conditions, blending ratio and post treatments. This dissertation uses a combination of microbiology, mineralogy, and geochemistry to understand dissimilatory iron reduction in hyperthermophilic archaea and the role and potential impact of these and other vent microorganisms within active deep-sea hydrothermal vent chimneys. Gas phase studies can reveal the fundamental nature of these metal-ligand interactions. Combining all of these properties into a new material presents a considerable synthetic challenge because potential commercial applications require materials that are high-performance and inexpensive. In this thesis, we consider instances of component failure in the Internet and in networked cyber-physical systems, such as the communication network used by the modern electric power grid (termed the smart grid). We design algorithms that make these networks more robust to various component failures, including failed routers, failures of links connecting routers, and failed sensors. The Cenomanian/Turonian (C/T) boundary marine strata of the Late Cretaceous Western Interior Sea (WIS) exhibit a positive carbon isotopic excursion in the bulk-carbonate and organic carbon. This marks Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE 2), which spans the uppermost part of the Hartland Shale and one-third of the overlying Bridge Creek Limestone members of the Greenhorn Formation and their equivalents. The interval is characterized by alternating beds of light-colored limestone and dark-colored marlstone and calcareous shale. These lithologic couplets have been related to Milankovitch orbital cyclicity. We define an entity to be a thing or concept that exists in the world, such as a politician, a battle, a film, or a color.
