Comparing Dietary Differences Among The Hornless Artiodactyl Ruminants Hypertragulus, Hypisodus, And Leptomeryx From The Early Oligocene (Orellan) Brule Formation, Toadstool Geologic Park, Nebraska, Holly Chien Seyler

The Early Oligocene (Orellan) in the North American Western Interior is marked by a cooler and dryer climate than the late Eocene (Chadronian). New mammalian taxa appeared while other groups already present began to diversify. This study takes a closer look at the diversification of hornless ruminant artiodactyls present in the Latest Orellan Merycoidodon bullatus Interval Zone through an analysis of 70 specimens from three closely related species: Hypertragulus (27), Hypisodus (18), and Leptomeryx (25) from a single locality in Toadstool Geologic Park, Nebraska. Genomic variance components analysis seeks to estimate the extent to which interindividual variation in a given trait can be attributed to genetic similarity. Likelihood estimation of such models involves computationally expensive operations on large, dense, and unstructured matrices of high rank. As a result, standard estimation procedures relying on direct matrix methods become prohibitively expensive as sample sizes increase. We propose a novel estimation procedure that uses the Lanczos process and stochastic Lanczos quadrature to approximate the likelihood for an initial choice of parameter values. In the last few years there have been major improvements in the performance of hard nat- ural language processing tasks due to the application of artificial neural network models. These models replace complex hand-engineered systems for extracting and representing the meaning of human language with systems which learn features based on processing examples of language. Recent advances in the generation and control of attosecond light pulses have opened up new opportunities for the real-time observation of sub-femtosecond (1 fs = 10-15 s) electron dynamics in gases and solids. Combining attosecond light pulses with angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (atto-ARPES) provides a powerful new technique to study the influence of material band structure on attosecond electron dynamics in materials. Electron dynamics that are only now accessible include the lifetime of far-above-bandgap excited electronic states, as well as fundamental electron interactions such as scattering and screening. The progression from two- through few- to many-body physics is an open and interesting question. Experiments that can test these theories must walk the fine line between cultivating a rich many-body system, yet preventing the interactions from completely destroying the system before study. This thesis explores the two- and few-body interactions present in a resonantly interacting degenerate Bose gas. We explore these interactions as a function of the density of the initial Bose-Einstein condensate. Study Region: Upper Missouri River Basin.

Study Focus: The semi-arid Upper Missouri River Basin (UMRB) has experienced notable vola- tility in high and low streamflow extremes in recent decades, punctuated by the record 2011 flood. This study provides a new perspective into the relative importance of precipitation and antecedent moisture conditions in driving extreme streamflow. Ensemble streamflow simulations demonstrate that precipitation is largely the dominant driver for high streamflows. Low-cost sensors have the potential to facilitate the exploration of air quality issues on new temporal and spatial scales. Here we evaluate a low-cost sensor quantification system for methane through its use in two different deployments. The first was a 1-month deployment along the Colorado Front Range and included sites near active oil and gas operations in the Denver-Julesburg basin. The second deployment was in an urban Los Angeles neighborhood, subject to complex mixtures of air pollution sources including oil operations. How have we arrived at the diverse set of complex species that we currently find in our world? Using statistical simulations of evolutionary processes, this study investigates how the fundamental minimum sizes of species increase irreversibly over time, and how complexities evolved along the way compound throughout that process. Our results imply that unless a random mutation opens up a new dimension of nichespace for the clade to expand within, the mutation will eventually become extinct due to inherent genetic drift.

Continental serpentinizing systems, such as the Samail Ophiolite in Oman, are excellent locations to study low-temperature water/rock reactions leading hydrogen production. Hydrogen is a strong electron donor that, along with electron acceptors such as CO2 or SO42-, can sustain microbial life. I performed experimental and analytical work with partially serpentinized peridotite from Oman to determine that Fe(II)-bearing brucite is a key reactive mineral leading to hydrogen production. Estimation of gridded precipitation is a major point of interest in climatological and hydro- logical research. Using a novel approach based around kernel density estimation we attempt to improve on a currently available estimators of gridded precipitation in both accuracy and under- standing uncertainty in predictions by generating robust precipitation climatologies.
