The Glass Bead Game, David D. Nolte Jan 2001

The Glass Bead Game, David D. Nolte

David D Nolte

Our lives are filled with images. Everyday we see signals, read signs, and learn symbols. We find our way with maps, look for news and bargains in newspapers, calculate ourbills and taxes. We turn printed music into wonderful sounds, often without consciouseffort. Icons fill our churches, synagogues and mosques, dot our computer screens, andare sprawled on billboards, on clothing and advertisement pages. Architecture and artconspire to fill our views with meaningful shapes and form. Pictures capture an instant intime, while movies and video entertain us with visual motion. We live in a visual world, full of information transmitted by light.

The Age Of Entanglement Jan 2001

The Age Of Entanglement

David D Nolte

Quantum mechanics is a venerable field of study. The year 2000 marked the 100th anniversary of theoriginal quantum hypothesis proposed by Max Planck in November of 1900. Few current fields in physicsor engineering are as old as quantum mechanics. It predates relativity, both special and general. It predatesnuclear and particle physics. Quantum mechanics even predates universal acceptance of the molecularhypothesis, that is, that all matter is made up of individual molecules in thermal motion. It may be hard tobelieve, but this happened only after Einstein's paper on Brownian motion was published in his miracleyear 1905.

Flue gas cleaning system is a very important part of each hazardous waste incineration plant. Air pollutant emission limit values permissible for this process in Member States of the European Union are so rigorous that the installation designers there are forced to use very effective and of course expensive solutions. In the paper a review of methods and systems used to the treatment of flue gases from hazardous waste incineration is presented. This can be particularly useful in the face of the adaptation of existing waste incineration plant operating in Poland with European Union requirements.

Gis And Spatial Analysis In Urban And Regional Research, Derek Bond Nov 2000

Gis And Spatial Analysis In Urban And Regional Research, Derek Bond

Derek Bond

The early optimism surrounding GIS has now faded. Few GIS implementations have lived up to expectation. The most successful have been those at the operational level where their main role has been to replace paper maps with digital ones. However, as the cost of GIS implementation falls and spatial data becomes more readily available there is a need to consider the future of GIS and spatial analysis. This is particularly important in the field of urban and regional research especially where considerable investment in GIS has already been made. This paper looks at the major issues that face regional and …

The Influence Of Wave– And Zonal Mean–Ozone Feedbacks On The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Eugene Cordero, Terrence R. Nathan Oct 2000

The Influence Of Wave– And Zonal Mean–Ozone Feedbacks On The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Eugene Cordero, Terrence R. Nathan

Eugene C. Cordero

The effects of wave and zonal mean ozone heating on the evolution of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) are examined using a two-dimensional mechanistic model of the equatorial stratosphere. The model atmosphere is governed by coupled equations for the zonal mean and (linear) wave fields of ozone, temperature, and wind, and is driven by specifying the amplitudes of a Kelvin wave and a Rossby–gravity wave at the lower boundary. Wave–mean flow interactions are accounted for in the model, but not wave–wave interactions.

A reference simulation (RS) of the QBO, in which ozone feedbacks are neglected, is carried out and the results …

Measuring The "Managedness" And Covered Benefits Of Health Plans, Paula Diehr, David Grembowski

Paula Diehr

STUDY AIMS: (1) To develop indexes measuring the degree of managedness and the covered benefits of health insurance plans, (2) to describe the variation in these indexes among plans in one health insurance market, (3) to assess the validity of the health plan indexes, and (4) to examine the association between patient characteristics and the health plan indexes. Measures of the "managedness" and covered benefits of health plans are requisite for studying the effects of managed care on clinical practice and health system performance, and they may improve people's understanding of our complex health care system. DATA SOURCES/STUDY SETTING: As …

Pesticide Waste Incineration In The Wet Process Cement Kiln, Marian Mazur, Robert Oleniacz, Marek Bogacki, Stanisław Słupek Jul 2000

Pesticide Waste Incineration In The Wet Process Cement Kiln, Marian Mazur, Robert Oleniacz, Marek Bogacki, Stanisław Słupek

Robert Oleniacz

The presentation discusses the problem of pesticide wastes in Poland that have been accumulated underground in concrete graveyards or bunkers. Their progressive unsealing poses a significant health risk to people due to groundwater, soil and air pollution. There are not many of professional hazardous waste incineration plants in Poland, therefore, the paper proposes the use of cement kiln for thermal treatment of such waste. Polish cement industry is interested in utilization of various wastes (e.g. in the capacity of alternative fuels) in the process connected with the cement clinker production in rotary kilns. High temperatures existing in cement kilns (ca. …

Effects Of Planetary Wave-Breaking On The Seasonal Variation Of Total Column Ozone, Terrence R. Nathan, Eugene C. Cordero, Long Li, Donald J. Wuebbles Jul 2000

Effects Of Planetary Wave-Breaking On The Seasonal Variation Of Total Column Ozone, Terrence R. Nathan, Eugene C. Cordero, Long Li, Donald J. Wuebbles

Eugene C. Cordero

The effects of planetary wave breaking on the seasonal variation of total column ozone are investigated using a zonally averaged chemical-radiative-transport model of the atmosphere. The planetary wave breaking effects of zonal wavenumbers k=1 and k=2 are significant in the middle latitude stratosphere during Northern Hemisphere (NH) winter, whereas only wave k=1 is important during Southern Hemisphere (SH) winter. The mixing and induced meridional circulation due to the planetary wave breaking increases the seasonal variation of total column ozone in NH (SH) middle latitudes by ∼20% (∼10%).

Struktura Emisji Związków Fluoru Z Hutnictwa Żelaza Na Przykładzie Huty Katowice, Marian Mazur, Robert Oleniacz, Marek Bogacki

Robert Oleniacz

As recently as a dozen or so years ago ferrous metallurgy was known as one of the biggest source of fluorine compound emissions to the atmosphere. Nevertheless production technology and raw material changes occurring in this industry cause continuous decreasing of their participation in the total fluorine emission. On the ground of investigations that have been carried out in the Katowice Steelworks (Poland) in the last few years, participation of particular technological processing in the water-soluble fluorine compound emissions (which are regarded as toxic) were presented in the paper, as well as a position of fuel combustion process (that take …

Robert Oleniacz

Polish industrial plants with protective zones delimited in the past, have been faced with the necessity to liquidation of these zones before 2005. At the same time the plants must not cause any harmful influence over environment outside the area which they have title deed to. Determination of the current range of this impact is very important due to the high costs of a possible purchase of land exposed to the harmful effects. The study analyzes the possibility of verifying the course of borders two existing protective zones: around Katowice Steelworks and Coking Plant "Przyjaźń" in Dąbrowa Górnicza (the first …

Spopielanie Odpadów Medycznych W Systemie Purotherm-Pyrolise – Zmienność Składu Spalin I Emisji Zanieczyszczeń W Cyklu Załadowczym, Robert Oleniacz, Marian Mazur, Marek Bogacki

Robert Oleniacz

The paper presents selected effects of the cyclical nature of the two-stage process of medical waste incineration on the variation of concentrations of basic constituents and selected gaseous pollutants (NOx, CO, SO2, H2S and HCl) in flue gas discharged from the process. The study included the installation working in the Purotherm-Pyrolise system (waste gasification and gas afterburning) with actual yields of 100-150 kg/h. The phases of the process varied in dynamic and direction changes of the flue-gas composition and the levels of air pollutant emissions were separated and described for these phases. They can be very important for the organization …

Neptune: Un Logiciel Pour Les Écoulements De Rivière, Alexandre Martin, Marcelo Reggio, Jean-Yves Trépanier Jun 2000

Neptune: Un Logiciel Pour Les Écoulements De Rivière, Alexandre Martin, Marcelo Reggio, Jean-Yves Trépanier

Alexandre Martin

Scalar Absorption By Spinning D3-Branes, George Siopsis Jan 2000

Scalar Absorption By Spinning D3-Branes, George Siopsis

George Siopsis

We discuss absorption of scalars by a distribution of spinning D3-branes. The D3-branes are multi-center solutions of supergravity theory. We solve the wave equation in various cases of supergravity backgrounds in which the equation becomes separable. We show that the absorption coefficients exhibit a universal behavior as functions of the angular momentum quantum number and the Hawking temperature. This behavior is similar to the form of the gray-body factors one encounters in scattering by black holes. Our discussion includes the problematic case of spherically symmetric distributions of D-branes, where resonances arise. We obtain the same universal form for the absorption …

Terminology Work: Tools And Processes That Make A Difference, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Technical texts, i.e., technical literature proper (data sheets, user documentation, scientific publications, etc.), as well as the whole range of medical and legal texts, have one feature in common: Their authors make generous use of: a) words not in common usage, e.g., dongle (a computer hardware device that prevents unauthorized use of protected software); and/or b) words that are in common usage but have a slightly, or even totally, different meaning in the special language, e.g., bug (in the general sense, this means a small insect, but in the computer software field, this is a small defect in the code …

Reflexive Autopoietic Dissipative Special Systems Theory, Kent D. Palmer Jan 2000

Reflexive Autopoietic Dissipative Special Systems Theory, Kent D. Palmer

Kent D. Palmer

A newly discovered approach to extending General Systems Theory as defined by George Klir through a set of Special Systems is described. General Systems Theory is distinguished from the theory of Meta-systems. Then, a hinge of three special systems is identified between systems and meta-systems. These special systems are defined by algebraic analogies. Anomalous physical phenomena are specified that exemplify the structures defined by the algebraic analogies. The extraordinary efficacious properties of these special systems are explained. These include ultra-efficiency and ultra-effectiveness. These three special systems are called dissipative, autopoietic, and reflexive. They are anomalous within general systems theory and …

Weighted Simplex Procedures For Determining Boundary Points And Constants For The Univariate And Multivariate Power Methods, Todd C. Headrick, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky Jan 2000

Weighted Simplex Procedures For Determining Boundary Points And Constants For The Univariate And Multivariate Power Methods, Todd C. Headrick, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky

Todd Christopher Headrick

The power methods are simple and efficient algorithms used to generate either univariate or multivariate non-normal distributions with specified values of (marginal) mean, standard deviation, skew, and kurtosis. The power methods are bounded as are other transformation techniques. Given an exogenous value of skew, there is an associated lower bound of kurtosis. Previous approximations of the boundary for the power methods are either incorrect or inadequate. Data sets from education and psychology can be found to lie within, near or outside the boundary of the power methods. In view of this, we derived necessary and sufficient conditions using the Lagrange …

The analysis of cancer survival is used to determine the efficiency of treatment programmes and protocols; it is also used to determine the type of treatment. At the individual level a prediction of cancer survival can help patients make informed decisions with regards to their quality of life and future finances. Currently available prediction methods apply to groups of people, and may not be adequate to predict treatment outcome for individual patients. This paper presents a conceptual model of a cancer knowledge base incorporating a computer-based predictor for survival. It proposes the use of an artificial neural network (ANN) as …

Toward An Ecosystem Approach To Remediation In The Great Basin, Ted K. Raab Jan 2000

Toward An Ecosystem Approach To Remediation In The Great Basin, Ted K. Raab

Ted K. Raab

We consider the web of interactions among geologic materials, soils, plants, and animals to ask, "If mining or other extractive energy technologies occur in desert regions, what do we need to know to return the land to productivity?" The Great Basin represents a formidable challenge in this regard, as winters in these cold deserts and seasonal lack of moisture during parts of the year severely constrain the growing season for vegetation. Due to the nature of current or proposed mining activities in this region, we have chosen to concentrate on two potential pollutants: the trace element selenium (Se) and nitrate …

Emergency Response Canadian Pacific Railway Canadian Main Line, Barry A. Palynchuk Phd, Michael J. Loehr, Robert W. Badger, Robert P. Conroy, Clive H. Mackay

Barry A. Palynchuk PhD

In late June 1998, a major storm event occurred in the Adirondack Mountains in the vicinity of Keeseville, New York about 150 miles north of Albany. This storm resulted in unprecedented damage to the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) Canadian Mainline along the shores of Lake Champlain. The storm caused 14 major embankment failures and washouts, numerous minor failures, severe bridge foundation scour and a major mainline derailment.
