New Effective Transformational Computational Methods, Jun Zhang, Ruzong Fan, Fangyang Shen, Junyi Tu
New Effective Transformational Computational Methods, Jun Zhang, Ruzong Fan, Fangyang Shen, Junyi Tu
Publications and Research
Mathematics serves as a fundamental intelligent theoretic basis for computation, and mathematical analysis is very useful to develop computational methods to solve various problems in science and engineering. Integral transforms such as Laplace Transform have been playing an important role in computational methods. In this paper, we will introduce Sumudu Transform in a new computational approach, in which effective computational methods will be developed and implemented. Such computational methods are straightforward to understand, but powerful to incorporate into computational science to solve different problems automatically. We will provide computational analysis and essentiality by surveying and summarizing some related recent works, …
New Algorithmic Support For The Fundamental Theorem Of Algebra, Vitaly Zaderman
New Algorithmic Support For The Fundamental Theorem Of Algebra, Vitaly Zaderman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Univariate polynomial root-finding is a venerated subjects of Mathematics and Computational Mathematics studied for four millenia. In 1924 Herman Weyl published a seminal root-finder and called it an algorithmic proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. Steve Smale in 1981 and Arnold Schonhage in 1982 proposed to classify such algorithmic proofs in terms of their computational complexity. This prompted extensive research in 1980s and 1990s, culminated in a divide-and-conquer polynomial root-finder by Victor Pan at ACM STOC 1995, which used a near optimal number of bit-operations. The algorithm approximates all roots of a polynomial p almost as fast as one …
A Causal Inference Approach For Spike Train Interactions, Zach Saccomano
A Causal Inference Approach For Spike Train Interactions, Zach Saccomano
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Since the 1960s, neuroscientists have worked on the problem of estimating synaptic properties, such as connectivity and strength, from simultaneously recorded spike trains. Recent years have seen renewed interest in the problem coinciding with rapid advances in experimental technologies, including an approximate exponential increase in the number of neurons that can be recorded in parallel and perturbation techniques such as optogenetics that can be used to calibrate and validate causal hypotheses about functional connectivity. This thesis presents a mathematical examination of synaptic inference from two perspectives: (1) using in vivo data and biophysical models, we ask in what cases the …

This is one of LaGuardia’s Project Connexion STEM Team’s experiential learning activities. Project Connexion's purpose is to promote creative thinking on how to engage students in the classroom. As part of this, the STEM team developed Experiential/co-curricular activities that demonstrated to students how their work in class connects to the world around them. These activities were embedded into the syllabus to ensure the participation of all students. Each professor designed a Co-curricular activity for their courses, ensuring that the Co-curricular activity directly linked course material to the outside world.

Soundness And Completeness Results For The Logic Of Evidence Aggregation And Its Probability Semantics, Eoin Moore
Soundness And Completeness Results For The Logic Of Evidence Aggregation And Its Probability Semantics, Eoin Moore
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Logic of Evidence Aggregation (LEA), introduced in 2020, offers a solution to the problem of evidence aggregation, but LEA is not complete with respect to the intended probability semantics. This left open the tasks to find sound and complete semantics for LEA and a proper axiomatization for probability semantics. In this thesis we do both. We also develop the proof theory for some LEA-related logics and show surprising connections between LEA-related logics and Lax Logic.
On The Spectrum Of Quaquaversal Operators, Josiah Sugarman
On The Spectrum Of Quaquaversal Operators, Josiah Sugarman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In 1998 Charles Radin and John Conway introduced the Quaquaversal Tiling. A three dimensional hierarchical tiling with the property that the orientations of its tiles approach a uniform distribution faster than what is possible for hierarchical tilings in two dimensions. The distribution of orientations is controlled by the spectrum of a certain Hecke operator, which we refer to as the Quaquaversal Operator. For example, by showing that the largest eigenvalue has multiplicity equal to one, Charles Radin and John Conway showed that the orientations of this tiling approach a uniform distribution. In 2008, Bourgain and Gamburd showed that this operator …
On The Second Case Of Fermat's Last Theorem Over Cyclotomic Fields, Owen Sweeney
On The Second Case Of Fermat's Last Theorem Over Cyclotomic Fields, Owen Sweeney
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We obtain a new simpler sufficient condition for Kolyvagin's criteria, regarding the second case of Fermat's last theorem with prime exponent p over the p-th cyclotomic field, to hold. It covers cases when the existing simpler sufficient conditions do not hold and is important for the theoretical study of the criteria.
On The Order-Type Complexity Of Words, And Greedy Sidon Sets For Linear Forms, Yin Choi Cheng
On The Order-Type Complexity Of Words, And Greedy Sidon Sets For Linear Forms, Yin Choi Cheng
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This work consists of two parts. In the first part, we study the order-type complexity of right-infinite words over a finite alphabet, which is defined to be the order types of the set of shifts of said words in lexicographical order. The set of shifts of any aperiodic morphic words whose first letter in the purely-morphic pre-image occurs at least twice in the pre-image has the same order type as Q ∩ (0, 1), Q ∩ (0, 1], or Q ∩ [0, 1). This includes all aperiodic purely-morphic binary words. The order types of uniform-morphic ternary words were also studied, …
Fuglede's Conjecture In Some Finite Abelian Groups, Thomas Fallon
Fuglede's Conjecture In Some Finite Abelian Groups, Thomas Fallon
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation thoroughly examines Fuglede's Conjecture within some discrete settings, shedding light on its intricate details. Fuglede's Conjecture establishes a profound connection between the geometric property of being a tiling set and the analytical attribute of being a spectral set. By exploring the conjecture on various discrete settings, this thesis delves into the implications and ramifications of the conjecture, unraveling its implications within the field.
Approaches To The Erdős–Straus Conjecture, Ivan V. Morozov
Approaches To The Erdős–Straus Conjecture, Ivan V. Morozov
Publications and Research
The Erdős–Straus conjecture, initially proposed in 1948 by Paul Erdős and Ernst G. Straus, asks whether the equation 4/n = 1/x + 1/y + 1/z is solvable for all n ∈ N and some x, y, z ∈ N. This problem touches on properties of Egyptian fractions, which had been used in ancient Egyptian mathematics. There exist many partial solutions, mainly in the form of arithmetic progressions and therefore residue classes. In this work we explore partial solutions and aim to expand them.

An Explicit Construction Of Sheaves In Context, Tyler A. Bryson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This document details the body of theory necessary to explicitly construct sheaves of sets on a site together with the development of supporting material necessary to connect sheaf theory with the wider mathematical contexts in which it is applied. Of particular interest is a novel presentation of the plus construction suitable for direct application to a site without first passing to the generated grothendieck topology.
Pairings In A Ring Spectrum-Based Bousfield-Kan Spectral Sequence, Jonathan Toledo
Pairings In A Ring Spectrum-Based Bousfield-Kan Spectral Sequence, Jonathan Toledo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Bousfield and Kan traditionally formulated their homotopy spectral sequence over a simplicial set X resolved with respect to a ring R. By considering an adequate category of ring spectra, one can take a ring spectrum E, create from it a functor of a triple on the category of simplicial sets, and build a cosimplicial simplicial set EX. The homotopy spectral sequence can then be formed over such cosimplicial spaces by a similar construction to the original. Pairings can be established on these spectral sequences, and, for nice enough spaces, these pairings on the E2-terms coincide with certain …
Quantifying Separability In Limit Groups, Keino Brown
Quantifying Separability In Limit Groups, Keino Brown
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We show that for any finitely generated non-abelian subgroup H of a limit group L, there exists a finite-index subgroup K which is fully residually H. This generalizes the result of Wilton that limit groups admit local retractions. We also show that for any finitely generated subgroup of a limit group, there is a finite-dimensional representation of the limit group which separates the subgroup in the induced Zariski topology. As a corollary, we establish a polynomial upper bound on the size of the quotients used to separate a finitely generated subgroup in a limit group. This generalizes results of Louder, …

A Stronger Strong Schottky Lemma For Euclidean Buildings, Michael E. Ferguson
A Stronger Strong Schottky Lemma For Euclidean Buildings, Michael E. Ferguson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We provide a criterion for two hyperbolic isometries of a Euclidean building to generate a free group of rank two. In particular, we extend the application of a Strong Schottky Lemma to buildings given by Alperin, Farb and Noskov. We then use this extension to obtain an infinite family of matrices that generate a free group of rank two. In doing so, we also introduce an algorithm that terminates in finite time if the lemma is applicable for pairs of certain kinds of matrices acting on the Euclidean building for the special linear group over certain discretely valued fields.

Logic, Co-Ordination And The Envelope Of Our Beliefs, Rohit J. Parikh
Logic, Co-Ordination And The Envelope Of Our Beliefs, Rohit J. Parikh
Publications and Research
Each of us has a story which we can think of as a set of beliefs, hopefully consistent. We make our decisions in view of our beliefs which may be probabilistic, in the general case, but simple yes or no as in this paper. Our beliefs are our envelope just as the shell of a tortoise is its envelope.
Decision theory - or single agent game theory tells us when to make the best choice in a game of us against nature. But nature has no desire to further or frustrate our efforts. Nature is mysterious but not malign.

Conflict Dynamics In Scale-Free Networks With Degree Correlations And Hierarchical Structure, Eduardo Jacobo-Villegas, Bibiana Obregón-Quintana, Lev Guzmán-Vargas, Larry S. Liebovitch
Conflict Dynamics In Scale-Free Networks With Degree Correlations And Hierarchical Structure, Eduardo Jacobo-Villegas, Bibiana Obregón-Quintana, Lev Guzmán-Vargas, Larry S. Liebovitch
Publications and Research
We present a study of the dynamic interactions between actors located on complex networks with scale-free and hierarchical scale-free topologies with assortative mixing, that is, correlations between the degree distributions of the actors. The actor’s state evolves according to a model that considers its previous state, the inertia to change, and the influence of its neighborhood. We show that the time evolution of the system depends on the percentage of cooperative or competitive
interactions. For scale-free networks, we find that the dispersion between actors is higher when all interactions are either cooperative or competitive, while a balanced presence of interactions …
Asymptotic Classes, Pseudofinite Cardinality And Dimension, Alexander Van Abel
Asymptotic Classes, Pseudofinite Cardinality And Dimension, Alexander Van Abel
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We explore the consequences of various model-theoretic tameness conditions upon the behavior of pseudofinite cardinality and dimension. We show that for pseudofinite theories which are either Morley Rank 1 or uncountably categorical, pseudofinite cardinality in ultraproducts satisfying such theories is highly well-behaved. On the other hand, it has been shown that pseudofinite dimension is not necessarily well-behaved in all ultraproducts of theories which are simple or supersimple; we extend such an observation by constructing simple and supersimple theories in which pseudofinite dimension is necessarily ill-behaved in all such ultraproducts. Additionally, we have novel results connecting various forms of asymptotic classes …
The Local Lifting Problem For Curves With Quaternion Actions, George Mitchell
The Local Lifting Problem For Curves With Quaternion Actions, George Mitchell
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The lifting problem asks whether one can lift Galois covers of curves defined over positive characteristic to Galois covers of curves over characteristic zero. The lifting problem has an equivalent local variant, which asks if a Galois extension of complete discrete valuation rings over positive characteristic, with algebraically closed residue field, can be lifted to characteristic zero. In this dissertation, we content ourselves with the study of the local lifting problem when the prime is 2, and the Galois group of the extension is the group of quaternions. In this case, it is known that certain quaternion extensions cannot be …
Generalization Of Bi-Canonical Degrees, Joseph Brennan, Laura Ghezzi, Jooyoun Hong, Wolmer Vasconcelos
Generalization Of Bi-Canonical Degrees, Joseph Brennan, Laura Ghezzi, Jooyoun Hong, Wolmer Vasconcelos
Publications and Research
We discuss invariants of Cohen-Macaulay local rings that admit a canonical module ω. Attached to each such ring R, when ω is an ideal, there are integers–the type of R, the reduction number of ω–that provide valuable metrics to express the deviation of R from being a Gorenstein ring. In (Ghezzi et al. in JMS 589:506–528, 2017) and (Ghezzi et al. in JMS 571:55–74, 2021) we enlarged this list with the canonical degree and the bi-canonical degree. In this work we extend the bi-canonical degree to rings where ω is not necessarily an ideal. We also discuss generalizations to rings …

The Zariski-Riemann Space As A Universal Model For The Birational Geometry Of A Function Field, Giovan Battista Pignatti Morano Di Custoza
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Given a function field $K$ over an algebraically closed field $k$, we propose to use the Zariski-Riemann space $\ZR (K/k)$ of valuation rings as a universal model that governs the birational geometry of the field extension $K/k$. More specifically, we find an exact correspondence between ad-hoc collections of open subsets of $\ZR (K/k)$ ordered by quasi-refinements and the category of normal models of $K/k$ with morphisms the birational maps. We then introduce suitable Grothendieck topologies and we develop a sheaf theory on $\ZR (K/k)$ which induces, locally at once, the sheaf theory of each normal model. Conversely, given a sheaf …
Thickened Surfaces, Checkerboard Surfaces, And Quantum Link Invariants, Joseph W. Boninger
Thickened Surfaces, Checkerboard Surfaces, And Quantum Link Invariants, Joseph W. Boninger
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation has two parts, each motivated by an open problem related to the Jones polynomial. The first part addresses the Volume Conjecture of Kashaev, Murakami, and Murakami. We define a polynomial invariant, JTn, of links in the thickened torus, which we call the nth toroidal colored Jones polynomial, and we show JTn satisfies many properties of the original colored Jones polynomial. Most significantly, JTn exhibits volume conjecture behavior. We prove a volume conjecture for the 2-by-2 square weave, and provide computational evidence for other links. We also give two equivalent constructions …
Prime Factors: America’S Prioritization Of Literacy Over Numeracy And Its Relationship To Systemic Inequity, Troy Smith
Prime Factors: America’S Prioritization Of Literacy Over Numeracy And Its Relationship To Systemic Inequity, Troy Smith
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
For much of American history, literacy has been prioritized in K-12 education and society, at large, at the expense of numeracy. This lack of numerical emphasis has established innumeracy as an American cultural norm that has resulted in America not producing a sufficient number of numerate citizens, and ranking poorly on mathematical performance in international comparisons. This paper investigates the decisions and circumstances that led to this under prioritization, along with the public and cultural impact of said actions. Toward this end, literature regarding contemporary and historical influences on American mathematics education (e.g., civic, policy, and parental) was reviewed. The …
