Vertical And Horizantal Analysis Of Crustal Structure In Eastern Anatolia Region, Oya Pamukçu, Tolga Gönenç, Ayça Yurdakul Çirmik, Şevket Demi̇rbaş, Seyit Tosun

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

The tectonic regime of Eastern Anatolia is determined by Arabian-Eurasian continentcontinent convergence and the mechanism occurred with the convergence. North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ), Eastern Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ), North Eastern Anatolian Faults and Bitlis Zagros Suture Zone are formed by this convergence, represent the characteristic of lithospheric structure of the region. In the scope of this study, the gravity anomalies of Eastern Anatolia were used for investigating the lithospheric structure. Firstly, second order trend analyses were applied to gravity data for examining the characteristic of the anomaly. Later, the vertical and horizontal derivatives methods were applied to the same …

Geophysical Evidence For Mid-Crustal Magma Reservoirs In The Lassen Volcanic Region, California, Samantha Catherine Tavarez Nov 2015

Geophysical Evidence For Mid-Crustal Magma Reservoirs In The Lassen Volcanic Region, California, Samantha Catherine Tavarez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Regional-scale complete Bouguer gravity anomalies underlying the Lassen and Shasta -Medicine Lake regions in northern California and southern Oregon are associated with subduction of the Gorda plate beneath North America. These generally negative anomalies reflect where underplating has deepened to form the mantle wedge, and where subduction has given rise to a series of Quaternary volcanoes comprising the southernmost end of the Cascade range. Multiple conductive bodies were identified by Park and Ostos (2013) in their magnetotelluric (MT) study of the broader Lassen volcanic region. Their broadband and long period measurements were conducted along a 250 km profile spanning from …

A Joint Receiver Function And Gravity Study Of Crustal Structure Beneath The Incipient Okavango Rift, Botswana, Youqiang Yu, Kelly H. Liu, Cory A. Reed, Moikwathai Moidaki, Kevin Mickus, Estella A. Atekwana, Stephen S. Gao Oct 2015

A Joint Receiver Function And Gravity Study Of Crustal Structure Beneath The Incipient Okavango Rift, Botswana, Youqiang Yu, Kelly H. Liu, Cory A. Reed, Moikwathai Moidaki, Kevin Mickus, Estella A. Atekwana, Stephen S. Gao

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Rifting incorporates the fundamental processes concerning the breakup of continental lithosphere and plays a significant role in the formation and evolution of sedimentary basins. In order to decipher the characteristics of rifting at its earliest stage, we conduct the first teleseismic crustal study of one of the world's youngest continental rifts, the Okavango Rift Zone (ORZ), where the magma has not yet breached the surface. Results from receiver function stacking and gravity modeling indicate that the crust/mantle boundary beneath the ORZ is uplifted by 4-5 km, and the initiation of the ORZ is closely related to lithospheric stretching. Possible decompression …

Schwarzschild Spacetime And Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker Cosmology, Zachary Cohen May 2015

Schwarzschild Spacetime And Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker Cosmology, Zachary Cohen

Honors Scholar Theses

The advent of General Relativity via Einstein's field equations revolutionized our understanding of gravity in our solar system and universe. The idea of General Relativity posits that gravity is entirely due to the geometry of the universe -- that is, the mass distribution throughout the universe results in the "curving" of spacetime, which gives us the physics we see on a large scale. In the framework of General Relativity, we find that the universe behaves differently than was predicted in the model of gravitation developed by Newton. We will derive the general relativistic model for a simple system near a …

What Do We Know About Lorentz Symmetry?, Q. G. Bailey Mar 2015

What Do We Know About Lorentz Symmetry?, Q. G. Bailey

Publications

Precision tests of Lorentz symmetry have become increasingly of interest to the broader gravitational and high-energy physics communities. In this talk, recent work on violations of local Lorentz invariance in gravity is discussed, including recent analysis constraining Lorentz violation in a variety of gravitational tests. The arena of short-range tests of gravity is highlighted, demonstrating that such tests are sensitive to a broad class of unexplored signals that depend on sidereal time and the geometry of the experiment.

The Spacetime Co-Torsion In Torsion-Free Biconformal Spaces, James Thomas Wheeler Feb 2015

The Spacetime Co-Torsion In Torsion-Free Biconformal Spaces, James Thomas Wheeler

James Thomas Wheeler

In preceding studies, [TR Gamma minus, TR Gamma plus] we showed that the solution for the connection of flat biconformal space also solves the curved space field equations for the torsion and co-torsion. We continued this investigation with an attempt to solve the full set of torsion and co-torsion field equations, with only the assumption of vanishing torsion and the known form of the metric. We successfully reduced the torsion equations to a single equation. Here, we reduce that equation to its essential degrees of freedom. We find that the spacetime co-torsion is entirely determined by the scale vector and …

Studies In Torsion Free Biconformal Spaces, James Thomas Wheeler

All Physics Faculty Publications

We study whether the solutions for the symmetric part of the connection in homogeneous biconformal space also satisfy the more general field equation of curved biconformal spaces. We show that the six field equations for the torsion and co-torsion are satisfied by vanishing torsion together with the Lorentzian form of the metric when γ+ = 0.

Gravity And Magnetic Investigations Into Possible Economic Mineral Deposits Within The Northwest St. Francois Terrane, Southeastern Missouri, Brandon Todd Ives Jan 2015

Gravity And Magnetic Investigations Into Possible Economic Mineral Deposits Within The Northwest St. Francois Terrane, Southeastern Missouri, Brandon Todd Ives

MSU Graduate Theses

The exposed Precambrian St. Francois Mountains in southeast Missouri are a well-studied terrane of rhyolites, granites, and basaltic dikes, but much of the buried basement lithology west of the exposed region is still poorly delineated. The western St. Francois is host to large hydrothermal Pb-Zn and Fe-oxide ore deposits, some of which were located with previous geophysical investigations. The economic ore deposits specifically in the Pea Ridge Mine in Washington County contain known economic minerals and rare earth element deposits. In order to further investigate the Precambrian basement lithologies and the possible locations of additional economic ore deposits, a gravity …
