Basis For Changes In The Disease Burden Estimates Related To Vitamin A And Zinc Deficiencies In The 2017 And 2019 Global Burden Of Disease Studies, Sonja Y. Hess, Alexander C. Mclain Ph.D., Haley Lescinsky, Kenneth H. Brown, Ashkan Afshin

Faculty Publications

Background:

The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study provides estimates of death and disability from eighty-seven risk factors, including some micronutrient deficiencies.

Objectives:

To review methodological changes that led to large differences in the disease burden estimates for vitamin A and Zn deficiencies between the GBD 2017 and 2019 Studies.

Methods:

GBD publications were reviewed; additional information was provided by GBD researchers.

Results:

Vitamin A deficiency prevalence is based on plasma retinol concentration, whereas the estimate for Zn deficiency prevalence uses dietary adequacy as a proxy. The estimated global prevalence of vitamin A deficiency for children aged 1–4 years in …

Evaluation Of Some Reliability Characteristics Of A Single Unit System Requiring Two Types Of Supporting Device For Operations, Ibrahim Yusuf, Nura J. Fagge Dec 2017

Evaluation Of Some Reliability Characteristics Of A Single Unit System Requiring Two Types Of Supporting Device For Operations, Ibrahim Yusuf, Nura J. Fagge

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This study presents the reliability assessment of a single unit connected to two types of external supporting devices for its operation. Each type of external supporting device has two copies I and II on standby. First order differential difference equations method is used to obtain the explicit expression for the steady state availability, busy period due to failure of type I and II supporting devices of repairmen, steady-state availability and profit function. Based on assumed numerical values given to system parameters, graphical illustrations are given to highlight important results. Comparisons are performed to highlight the impact of unit failure and …

Modelling Supercomputer Maintenance Interrupts: Maintenance Policy Recommendations, Jagadish Cherukuri Aug 2015

Modelling Supercomputer Maintenance Interrupts: Maintenance Policy Recommendations, Jagadish Cherukuri

Masters Theses

A supercomputer is a repairable system with large number of compute nodes interconnected to work in harmony to achieve superior computational performance. Reliability of such a complex system depends on an effective maintenance strategy that involves both emergency and preventive maintenance. This thesis analyzes the maintenance records of four supercomputers operational at The National Institute of Computational Science located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. We propose to use the generalized proportional intensities model (GPIM) to model the maintenance interrupts as it can capture both the reliability parameters and maintenance parameters and allows the inclusion of both emergency and preventive maintenance. …

Stochastic Modeling Of A Concrete Mixture Plant With Preventive Maintenance, Ashish Kumar, Monika Saini, S. C. Malik Jun 2014

Stochastic Modeling Of A Concrete Mixture Plant With Preventive Maintenance, Ashish Kumar, Monika Saini, S. C. Malik

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, a stochastic model for concrete mixture plant with Preventive Maintenance (PM) is analyzed in detail by using a supplementary variable technique. In a concrete mixture plant eight subsystems are arranged in a series. The system goes under PM after a maximum operation time and work as new after PM. The time to failure of each subsystem follows a negative exponential distribution while PM and repair time distributions are taken as arbitrary. A sufficient repair facility is provided to the system for conducting PM and repair of the system. Repair, maintenance and switch devices are perfect. All random …

Study Of Reliability With Mixed Standby Components, M. A. El-Damcese, A. N. Helmy Dec 2012

Study Of Reliability With Mixed Standby Components, M. A. El-Damcese, A. N. Helmy

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper deals with the reliability characteristics of two different series system configurations with mixed standby (include cold and warm standby) components. The failure rates of the primary and warm standby components are assumed to follow the Weibull distribution. The repair time distribution of each server is exponentially distributed. Moreover, we will derive the mean time-to-failure, and the steady-state availability for a special case of a serial system of two primary components, two warm standby components, and one cold standby component, when the failure and repair rate are constant.

Reliability Measures Of A Three-State Complex System: A Copula Approach, Mangey Ram Dec 2010

Reliability Measures Of A Three-State Complex System: A Copula Approach, Mangey Ram

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Improvement in reliability and production play a very important role in system design. The two key factors, considered in predicting system reliability, are failure distribution of the component and system configuration. This research discusses the mathematical modeling of a highly reliable complex system, which is in three states i.e. normal, partial failed (degraded state) and complete failed state. The system, partial failed is due to the partial failure of internal components or redundancies and completely failed is due to catastrophic failure of the system. Repair rates are general functions of the time spent. All the transition rates are constant except …

A Survey On Intrusion Detection Approaches, A Murali M. Rao Aug 2005

A Survey On Intrusion Detection Approaches, A Murali M. Rao

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

Intrusion detection plays one of the key roles in computer security techniques and is one of the prime areas of research. Usages of computer network services are tremendously increasing day by day and at the same time intruders are also playing a major role to deny network services, compromising the crucial services for Email, FTP and Web. Realizing the importance of the problem due to intrusions, many researchers have taken up research in this area and have proposed several solutions. It has come to a stage to take a stock of the research results and project a comprehensive view so …
