Land capability review for the Swan Valley.

The land capability review of the Swan Valley examined and updated previous soil and capability studies done in the area, which are still considered highly relevant for the planning requirements of the Swan Valley. As a result we have updated information on the potential for irrigated agriculture in the Swan Valley which will guide decision-making in the future.

This review uses a modified version of a new approach to presenting information for land use planning, developed by DAFWA in the Mid West region.

This report provides the underpinning information to help improve the long term profitability of wheat cropping. It documents the realistic potential yield of the 18 million hectares of agricultural land in the South West of Western Australia and the gap between this potential and the actual yields, based on shire averages. This report also summarises major land management constraints that limit the yield potential. This information can be used to aid strategic planning at different levels, for example state, shire and, with care, as a starting point for farm planning.

A database of plant lists from over 2,500 sites was compiled from the the Northern Sandplains between Perth and Geraldton. Over 2,500 plant taxa were recorded from the area. Preliminary classification revealed in the order of 500 different floristic types. Analysis of these demonstrated strong regional patterns of floristic composition related to geology and soils. Consistencies in these patterns indicated a need to review the location of some of the botanical district boundaries.

In south Western Australia, the lack of good quality feed in late summer and autumn is a major constraint to livestock production. This feed gap is usually filled by costly supplementary hand feeding of grain or hay. A detailed soil survey and horticultural capability assessment was undertaken over 1,804 ha of land adjacent to existing plantations on levees of the Gascoyne River near Carnarvon. The study provides mapped land resource data and advice in relation to land management and the possibility of further land release for horticulture. In the assessment of horticultural capability primary consideration has been given to the risk of erosion during flood events, to salinity, and to soil drainage conditions.

Toward Better Minimum Tillage For South-Coastal Sandplain Soils, W L. Crabtree

Seventeen farmers compared their conventional cropping practices with some form of minimum tillage cropping. The minimum tilled crops yielded 21 percent less grain than the conventionally sown crops. The reasons for these decreased yields were in most cases related to inexperienced management. The minimum tilled treatments usually had very poor weed kill strategies which often resulted in large weeds at sowing, very cloddy seed-beds, and numerous insects in the young crops.

Legume herbage mass was maximized after two or three years application of 50 kg/ha double superphosphate for both Verano and Fitzroy on Red earth soils and for Fitzroy on Yellow lateritic soils. There was increased production of Verano up to the maximum fertilizer level. Both varieties responded in the second year to residual P following application in the first year but there were no responses in subsequent years.

A study involving the documentation of the extent and floristic composition of patches of native vegetation left uncleared by agricultural development is described. Floristic regions were defined in the study area by detailed analysis of the floristic data. The concentration of the major conservation reserves in only a few of these regions left the floristic variation of most of these regions poorly represented conservation reserves. About 13 percent of the private property remains uncleared.

The most serious erosion was found to be occurring in the Donnybrook area due to a combination of erosive winter rainfall, steep slopes and erodible soils. The most serious erosion was found to occur when storm runoff entered the vegetable plots from above, providing a transporting medium for the cultivated soil. A predictive model of erosion showed that soil texture, furrow slope, plot length, rainfall erosivity and canopy cover were significant factors affecting soil loss.

Permeability, conductivity, conductance and resistance are important parameters in the description of water movement in soils and plants. These terms are related, but not synonymous. Permeability is only a function of the flow pathgeometry of the medium, while conductivity also depends on the fluid involved. Conductance, in addition, takes the size of the medium into account. Resistance is simply the inverse ofconductance. By applying the definition of resistance, it isshown that Darcy's law and Ohm's law are equivalent. The problems of wind erosion in part of the south coast of Western Australian sandplain area were described previously (Gorddard et al, 1981) with 7.3 per cent of cleared and 18.3 per cent of the cropped area showing evidence of sand blasting. Department of Agriculture trials have shown that the loss of the top four millimetres of top soil from pastured paddocks can reduce following crop yields by up to 20 per cent (Marsh and Carter, 1983). Soil losses over a three month period varied from 10 to 49 mm.. Soil loss was most highly correlated with length of slope of the plots. Other important factors appeared to be slope angle and soil textures. Grade furrows appear to be the best method of breaking-up long slope lengths. The low capacity of the furrows requires them to be on grades of about 4 to 4 per cent to prevent siltation and overtopping during high density storms.

Annean Station's carrying capacity has been estimated at 8,340 sheep on its 168,539 hectares. The halophyte pastures of Carnegie Land System were in good condition while those of Mileura Land System were in poor condition. The wandarrie pasture of the Belele Land System was in fair to poor condition. This system comnprises 34 per cent of Annean's area and is estimated as capable of presently carrying 2,900 stock.
