Secondary-school students and teachers need a safe, secure website where they can experience the life of their peers around the world through GigaPan panoramic images. Using a simple point and shoot camera, students can create deep-zoomable panoramas called GigaPans. A Ruby on Rails website was created to provide a location and interface for sharing and discussing these GigaPan panoramas between students and teachers across the globe. By sharing experiences and culture through this technology, the website aims to create a community of technologically and culturally aware young people.

In recent years, there has been much concern over the decline of biologists who actually identify themselves to be naturalists, which negatively impacts the field of conservation and the study of biology as a whole. This could result in a decrease in individuals who participate in naturalist-like activities, such as informal environmental education and environmental volunteerism. The use of simulation-based methods for introducing inference is growing in popularity for the Stat 101 course, due in part to increasing evidence of the methods ability to improve students’ statistical thinking. An Optimal Reinsurance Contract From Insurer's And Reinsurer's Viewpoints, Ali P. Bazaz, Amir T. Payandeh Najafabadi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This article constructs two classes of appropriate reinsurance contracts from both an insurer’s and a reinsurer’s viewpoints. The first class, say C; has been constructed by minimizing the conditional tail expectation, say CTE, of an insurer’s random risk. Then an optimal reinsurance contract has been obtained by estimating the reinsurance’s random risk, using the Bayesian estimation method while the second class of reinsurance contracts, say C*; is obtained by minimizing a convex combination of the CTE of both the insurer’s and reinsurer’s random risks. These two approaches consider both the insurer’s and reinsurer’s viewpoints to establish an optimal reinsurance contract. …

During their operational life, structures may be subject to various types of live load caused by events such as earthquakes, high speed winds, etc. Given the design life of a structure, the probability for a specific live load to cause a failure depends on the magnitude of the load structure it is designed to withstand (designed load). In this article, methods are developed for calculation of the failure probability for structures designed to withstand loads comparable to historical loads at the site of interest.

The Extended Lindley Poisson (ELP) distribution which is an extension of the extended Lindley distribution [2] is introduced and its properties are explored. This new distribution represents a more flexible model for the lifetime data. Some statistical properties of the proposed distribution including the shapes of the density, hazard rate functions, moments, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves are explored. Entropy measures and the distribution of the order statistics are given. The maximum likelihood estimation technique is used to estimate the model parameters and a simulation study is conducted to investigate the performance of the maximum likelihood estimates. One way to do this is to provide activities that stretch beyond the textbook and lead students to think and talk to one another about mathematics. Black Male Students And The Algebra Project: Mathematics Identity As Participation, Melva R. Grant, Helen Crompton, Deanna J. Ford

In this article, the authors examine the mathematics identity development of six Black male students over the course of a 4-year The Algebra Project Cohort Model (APCM) initiative. Mathematics identity here is defined as participation through interactions and positioning of self and others. Data collection included nearly 450 minutes of video recordings of small-group, mathematics problem solving in which student actions, coded as acts of participation, were tallied. These tallied actions were conceptualized descriptively in terms of mathematics identity using the lenses of agency, accountability, and work practices. The article here deals with the derivation of a general expression to calculate the volume of tetrahedron/pyramid bounded by a given plane & the co-rdinate planes (i.e. XY-plane, YZ-plane & ZX-plane) using intercept form of equation of a plane in 3-D space. The present study had two main objectives. The first was to determine the degree of understanding of climate change, sea level and sea level rise among middle school students. Combining open-ended questions with likert-scaled questions, we identified student conceptions on these topics in 86 students from 7th and 8th grades during 2012 and 2013 before and after implementing a Curriculum Unit (CU). Additional information was obtained by adding drawings to the open-ended questions during the second year to gauge how student conceptions varied from a verbal and a visual perspective.
