Potential Runoff Accumulation In Wheatbelt Towns Of Western Australia, Mahtab Ali, Travis Cattlin, Neil Coles, Sharam Sharafi

Resource management technical reports

Describes an analysis of flood runoff volumes from 16 small, gauged catchments in the agricultural areas of south western Australia. It also describes methods for estimating flood runoff volumes from ungauged catchments. The independent variables found to be statistically significant in explaining the variability in flood runoff volumes from the gauged catchments were catchment area, mean annual rainfall and the percentage of the catchment that was cleared. No soil factor was found to be significant.

Risk Mapping For Northern Kenya And Southern Ethiopia, D. Layne Coppock

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

We used results from 120 group interviews collected in 1998 to quantify how inhabitants across northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia perceive and rank various risks to their livelihoods. We also mapped risk patterns using Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates. Respondents recognized 15 sources of risk overall, with the most common being reliable access to food and water. Other risks were not mentioned by a majority of respondents and reflected diversity in local situations. Country of residence, wealth class, gender, and predominant means of food production (pastoralism, agro-pastoralism, and farming) influenced risk ranking. For example, wealthy males were most concerned about …

Organic Grapes And Wine : A Guide To Production, Gerry Parlevliet, Steven Mccoy Jul 2001

Organic Grapes And Wine : A Guide To Production, Gerry Parlevliet, Steven Mccoy

Bulletins 4000 -

The tastebuds, health concerns and environmental conscience of affluent consumers are demanding more organically grown food than producers worldwide can supply. Growing consumer concerns about the effects of synthetic chemical pesticides and fertilisers on human health and the environment have boosted world trade in organic products by a rate of about 20-30 per cent a year for the past 10 years. World trade was estimated to be worth $US 21.6 billion in 2000 and is expected to reach US$100 billion by the year 2006.

The Australian market for organic products alone is valued at $200-$250 million - with exports estimated …

Scott Coastal Plain A Strategy For A Sustainable Future, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia Jun 2001

Scott Coastal Plain A Strategy For A Sustainable Future, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

The Scott Coastal Plain has significant attributes that make it an area of State and regional significance for agricultural production. The climate, availability of good quality groundwater for irrigation, and large lot sizes provide opportunities for mechanised horticultural production which other parts of the State may not have.

An estimate of the area that could be used for each agricultural land use has been developed, at a broad study area level. The figures presented in this report show that diversified production combining tree plantation and/or irrigation (cropping or hay/silage) with grazing enterprises provides for potential increases in gross margins and …

Intensification In A Risky Environment: The Case Of Improving Private Grazing Land For Beef Production In Utah, Louise D. Sainsbury May 2001

Intensification In A Risky Environment: The Case Of Improving Private Grazing Land For Beef Production In Utah, Louise D. Sainsbury

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Utah ranchers commonly face risks to their livelihoods. The objective of this work was to determine if ranchers could make profitable improvements to private land forage given the combined threat of low beef prices, drought, and possible loss of public grazing.

We used linear programming (LINDO) to identify the most profitable solutions for private land investment with an 11-year simulation. Operations were divided into small, medium, and large size classes. Various forage improvements and public permits were options. Two phases of a beef price cycle (peak and trough) and 2 precipitation patterns (wet and drought) were combined as joint favorable …

Another Look At Clark's Adit-Silver Series, David W. Meek Apr 2001

Another Look At Clark's Adit-Silver Series, David W. Meek

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture

The empirical semivariogram for Clark's adit-silver series has been the subject of several publications. Its use in the literature along with some other discussed considerations makes this series a suitable selection for a classroom or workshop semivariogram modeling exercise. My emphasis in this exercise is on estimating the scale of fluctuation (8). Alternative unbounded, bounded asymptotic, and bounded transitional models are developed via weighted least-squares estimation for both regular and integral semivariogram parameterizations (ISV). Results are compared with Clark's recommendation along with some other traditional models, nonparametric models, and ad hoc numerical methods. When a given model fits well using …

An Uncertainty Analysis Procedure For Spatially Joint Simulations Of Multiple Attributes, Shoufan Fang, Guangxing Wang, George Z. Gertner, Alan Anderson Apr 2001

An Uncertainty Analysis Procedure For Spatially Joint Simulations Of Multiple Attributes, Shoufan Fang, Guangxing Wang, George Z. Gertner, Alan Anderson

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture

In this study, an uncertainty analysis procedure for joint sequential simulation of multiple attributes of spatially explicit models was developed based on regression analysis. This procedure utilizes information obtained from joint sequential simulation to establish the relationship between model uncertainty and variation of model inputs. Using this procedure, model variance can be partitioned by model input parameters on a pixel by pixel basis. In the partitioning, the correlation of neighboring pixels is accounted for. With traditional uncertainty analysis methods, this is not possible. In a case study, spatial variation of soil erodibility from a joint sequential simulation of soil properties …

Comparison Of Sas Proc Nlin And Nlmixed For Parameter Estimation In Pet Model, Y. Xie, A. M. Parkhurst, T. L. Mader, J. B. Gaughan Apr 2001

Comparison Of Sas Proc Nlin And Nlmixed For Parameter Estimation In Pet Model, Y. Xie, A. M. Parkhurst, T. L. Mader, J. B. Gaughan

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture

Cattle body temperatures were measured under semi-controlled hot cyclic chamber temperatures. The four-parameter nonlinear PET model, is used to estimate body temperature in cattle challenged by heat stress. For each steer, the parameters can be estimated by the Nlin procedure and the sensitivity of each animal can be studied. It is also desirable to generalize the results by using the Nlmixed procedure to combine both the fixed and random effects. When comparing the results from the two procedures, we found heterogeneity among animals and/or days caused convergence problems for proc Nlmixed. Simulation studies were used to study how deviations from …
