Los medicamentos homeopáticos se utilizan en animales como alternativa terapéutica extrapolando los resultados obtenidos en la medicina humana, ignorando las innumerables diferencias entre especies. Con el objetivo de determinar la patogenesia experimental del remedio homeopático Opium 30 centesimal en equinos, se tomo una muestra de 12 caballos de la unidad de Remonta de la Policía Nacional, sede Suba, Bogotá. A todos los animales se les realizó antes, durante y después del experimento un examen clínico completo, con el fin de establecer el estado clínico de los sujetos que participarían en la experimentación. La porcicultura es una parte importante del sector pecuario colombiano, contribuyendo para la economía nacional y ofreciendo una importante fuente de proteínas para consumo humano. Así, el estudio de enfermedades porcinas, como la circovirosis, una enfermedad de interés emergente mundialmente, es fundamental para la cuantificación del impacto de la misma sobre la porcicultura nacional. Además, la complejidad de los síntomas, el escaso conocimiento acerca de la distribución geográfica en Colombia y la falta de un profundo conocimiento de la patogenia del circovirus tipo 2 (PCV-2) hacen de la circovirosis un tema de interés prioritario a nivel de investigación. The Pet Food Recall Puzzle: Who, What, Why, And How Much, Roxanne Greitz Miller

Last spring, North America was gripped in the largest pet food recall in history. News outlets reported tens of thousands of dogs and cats becoming ill, and many dying, as a result of ingesting contaminated pet food. Several pet owners have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers and distributors of the pet food products. I think this is an excellent real-life science story to use with students to show science investigation in action, and to discuss the intersections between the role of regulatory agencies and the public.
