In light of the increasing number of girls participating in sports, the pressures associated with "big time sports," and interest in preventing alcohol-related problems in female athletes, the purpose of this viewpoint is to examine the prevalence of alcohol abuse in female athletes and to provide coaches and teachers with suggestions for education and prevention. Some of these include a continual increase in the competition, negotiating relationships with teammates and coaches, performance anxiety or fear of failure, decreased social interaction due to competition, time management issues, burnout, and coping with injuries (Storch, Storch, Killiany, & Roberti, 2005).

In higher education in the United States, women are often underrepresented in leadership positions. When women try administration, they face a higher rate of attrition than their male counterparts. Given the lack of women in leadership positions and the failure of the academy to retain women administrators, a group of women administrators and faculty with many collective years of experience in higher education assembled to write this paper. Our writing group consisted of 2 Chairs, 2 Deans, 1 Associate Dean, 2 pre-tenure faculty members, and a Provost, representing four different institutions. The authors of this paper suggest that applying the …

Cornography: Selling Women's Professional Basketball In A Girls' Basketball State, Shelley Lucas
Shelley Lucas
Examines the marketing strategy of the short-lived Iowa Cornets, part of the Women's Professional Basketball League (WBL) in the late 1970's. Hoping to capitalize on the popularity of Iowa girls' high school basketball, the Cornets emphasized everything Iowa, signing home-grown players, hiring coaches with Iowa connections, and employing "cornography" - green and gold team colors, an ear-of-corn mascot named Shucks, and a bus called the Corn Dog. After a year, however, the team adopted some of the WBL's apologetic strategies, overemphasizing players' femininity and heterosexuality.

Deliberate efforts to control body weight (e.g., purposeful dieting, prolonged fasting, self-induced vomiting, the use of diet pills), or unintentional restriction of energy intake that does not cover the costs of energy expenditure, all have a role in creating low energy stores (Golden, 2002; Manore, 2002). However, when young females develop patterns of unhealthy eating in conjunction with strenuous exercise during this window of bone accrual, menstrual dysfunction and low estrogen levels that may result can undo the beneficial effects of exercise on bone density (Drinkwater et al., 1984; Gordon, 2003; Miller, 2003) and place amenorrheic females at risk for …

Using The Alter-G Treadmill System With An Extremely Obese Female: A Case Study, Shawn Simonson, Jane Shimon, Elaine Long, Brooke Lester
Jane Shimon
PURPOSE: The present case study examined the potential use of the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill as treatment modality for extreme obese individuals. The special effect of the treadmill reduces ground reaction forces during walking through the use of lower body positive pressure. METHODS: One extremely obese (BMI 69.2) Caucasian 44 year-old female utilized the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill during a 14 wk walking program to pilot test the protocol. RESULTS: At the conclusion of the study, exercise tolerance time increased 3-fold (initially 20 min increased to 65 min) while caloric expenditure increased 4-fold (initially 91.0 kcal/session increased to 442.7 kcal/session) without an …

Yes, there are those states, districts, schools, and individual physical educators who have made positive changes in standards, curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices; however, the majority of secondary physical education departments still host a "one size fits all" program, whereby all students participate in the same traditional activities in the same, traditional, command style of teaching. [...] while some girls enrolled in a high school physical education program may want to learn and play flag football and a select group of boys may want to improve their fitness through step aerobics, they cannot.

Physical education teacher education (PETE) is one of many disciplines in higher education responsible for preparing future educators. Education in general is increasingly politicized by public officials and scrutinized by the media, and the programs that train tomorrow's public school teachers are no exception. Between the politics that shape many of the choices in teacher preparation and teachers' own sense of what needs to be taught, PETE faculty struggle to answer the question, "How can we deliver the best possible teacher education program to our undergraduates?"

Timothy Kempf
Objective: We studied the ability of patients with Parkinson's disease to improve their performance in a motor task requiring both speed and accuracy in the execution of elbow flexion movements. Our goal was to investigate the changes in electromyographic activity associated with the changes in movement performance.
Methods: Eleven patients on anti-Parkinsonian medication were tested. The patients were selected for being bradykinetic, having little or no resting tremor or dyskinesias, and being in stages II or III of the Hoehn and Yahr rating scale.
Results: The untrained patients displayed multiple bursts of agonist activity, characteristic of Parkinsonian EMG recordings. All …
