Diastrophic dysplasia (DTD) is a recessive chondrodysplasia caused by pathogenic variants in the SLC26A2 gene encoding for a cell membrane sulfate/chloride antiporter crucial for sulfate uptake and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) sulfation. Research on a DTD animal model has suggested possible pharmacological treatment approaches. In view of future clinical trials, the identification of non-invasive biomarkers is crucial to assess the efficacy of treatments. Urinary GAG composition has been analyzed in several metabolic disorders including mucopolysaccharidoses. Moreover, the N-terminal fragment of collagen X, known as collagen X marker (CXM), is considered a real-time marker of endochondral ossification and growth velocity and was studied …

Reaching And Supporting Diverse Student Groups: Examining The Hidden Curriculum In Occupational Therapy Education, Katherine Toon
Reaching And Supporting Diverse Student Groups: Examining The Hidden Curriculum In Occupational Therapy Education, Katherine Toon
Occupational Therapy Faculty Scholarship
As occupational therapy education is becoming more mindful of disparities in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the classroom and clinical practice, adjustments in curricula need to be made to affect long term changes, especially considering the many connections to intersectionality and improved patient outcomes. This poster explores emerging best practices and important reflections when reviewing health curricula, with special attention paid to the “hidden curriculum” surrounding DEI within occupational therapy education programs. By critically and thoroughly reviewing intended, actual, hidden, and null curricula, a better understanding of program and didactic shortcomings can be compiled and assessed. After distinctive reviews …

Within our profession, we possess many tools for improving our patients’ and clients’ lives, which can be translated to mentorship of other OTPs by making it an intentional aspect of our career. Building upon our role competencies allows us to explore creative ways in which we can enrich our colleagues and students. By reviewing and identifying AOTA’s five “Standards for Continuing Competency” through the lens of being a mentor, confidence can be built based on what each OTP currently possesses. Building upon these Standards which include, knowledge, critical reasoning, interpersonal skills, performance skills, and ethical reasoning, each practitioner can begin …

This file contains the data that was used to classify high and low quality gait patterns in patients with Parkinson's disease. Acceleration and gyroscope data was recorded with a conventional smartphone in a real-world environment. High (i.e. ON medication) and low (i.e. OFF medication) quality labels were given by a human observer according to medication intake times.

The Use Of Urine Drug Testing For Risk Stratification And Efficacious Drug Monitoring In Pain Management Settings, Ahmad I. Hasan, Kareem Elhage, Brendan Farley, Khaled J. Saleh
Medical Student Research Symposium
Objective: To understand the current landscape of urine drug testing (UDT) guidelines as part of risk assessment for opioid abuse, and to offer recommendations towards adopting universal screening guidelines.
Background: There has been an opioid epidemic within the United States, and the role of prescription opioids has been well established. Despite proposed recommendations, there has yet to be a published universal screening guideline on the use of UDT in the setting of opioid abuse risk stratification as well as postoperative drug monitoring.
Methods: We explored current guidelines for UDT on two levels. First, we explore general indications for UDT within …

Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate perceptions of staff about the promotion of physical activity (PA) in selected group residences of Hong Kong (HK), some of which had experienced a multi-component PA program. Method: Focus group interviews with nineteen staff members from four group homes (two of which received the program) were conducted. Findings: A SWOT analysis provided important insights into residential staff views about key influences on the quality of PA programs for residents with intellectual disabilities (ID). Positive (strengths and opportunities) and negative (weaknesses and threats) influences were identified. They were associated with characteristics of …

One of the sports for the Special Olympics is snow-shoeing. In Hong Kong training for this sport occurs in the sand and is called sand-shoeing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a sandshoeing training program (STP) of the Special Olympics Hong Kong (SOHK). Two hundreds and thirty-two Grade 1 to 12 special school students with intellectual disabilities (ID), and 66 university students without ID participated in the STP. Three different types of survey were designed for students with ID, university students, and special school teachers. Descriptive data from the feedback of these three parties on the STP were …

INTRODUCTION: The need to be able to assess collaborative practice in health care teams has been recognized in response to the direction for team-based care in a number of policy documents. The purpose of this study is to report on further refinement of such a measurement instrument, the Assessment of Interprofessional Team Collaboration Scale (AITCS) first published in 2012. To support this refinement, two objectives were set: Objective 1: to determine whether the items from the data collected in 2016 load on the same factors as found for the 2012 version of the 37-item AITCS. Objective 2: to determine whether …

Adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) typically have a sedentary lifestyle and higher rates of overweight and obesity. This study describes the habitual daily physical activity (PA) and the health-related physical fitness (PF) of adults with mild and moderate ID who resided in four group homes and worked in sheltered workshops. We also assessed the contribution of PF variables towards PA levels and sedentary behavior of this population subgroup. Adults with mild and moderate ID (N = 114) were assessed on PF tests (percent body fat, waist and hip circumferences, 6-min walk (6MWT), arm curl, and sit and reach). PA and …

Occupational Therapy Capstones
The purpose of this scholarly project was to create a resource for occupational therapists in the public school system to provide a guide to educators and paraprofessionals working with children with autism spectrum disorder. The resulting guide for the occupational therapist provides the necessary materials to develop child specific guides for the educator and paraprofessional. The product provides education and guidance to optimize the educator and paraprofessional's ability to provide for the needs of a child with autism spectrum disorder in the school environment.
A comprehensive literature review was conducted to examine current best practice and treatment guidelines for autism …
