Family-Centered Care In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Madison Winter May 2020

Family-Centered Care In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Madison Winter

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Family-centered care can be useful in any clinical scenario, but more so in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Having a preterm infant admitted into the NICU is not an ideal situation, and can cause high levels of apprehension for the parents. “Stress experienced by parents whose infant is hospitalized in the NICU is strongly correlated with anxiety, fatigue, depression, and sleep disruption” (Busse et al., 2013). Barriers To Pregnancy Health Care Perceived By The Hispanic Community In The Northern Midwest, Anna King May 2020

Barriers To Pregnancy Health Care Perceived By The Hispanic Community In The Northern Midwest, Anna King

Honors Program Projects

BACKGROUND:
This study explored the barriers to pregnancy health care experienced by Hispanic women. Research has shown that Hispanic patients are less likely to have adequate health insurance coverage compared to the white population in the United States and frequently face communication barriers in health care, as interpretive services are underutilized. These barriers may cause the Hispanic population to delay seeking health care and can lead to poor health outcomes. This is especially a problem in pregnancy health care, where prompt prenatal care is essential in ensuring a healthy pregnancy and positive health outcomes in both mother and baby.

Social Support As A Risk Factor Of Postpartum Depression Among Women Of Various Ethnicity, Jingle Xu May 2020

Social Support As A Risk Factor Of Postpartum Depression Among Women Of Various Ethnicity, Jingle Xu

MSN Capstone Projects

Postpartum depression is considered the most important mental disorder after delivery because of the high prevalence and the serious negative mother-baby outcomes. Education and support of mothers for postpartum depression are deeply held values of nursing care during pregnancy and the postpartum period (Ladewig, London & Davidson, 2014). Risk factors are the common target of these interventions, among which social support is one of the most popular factors in research currently. Social support is composed of instrumental, informational, and emotional support given by a social network to maintain an individual’s mental health status when they are faced with significant or …

Decreasing Hospitalization In Infants, William Hang Apr 2020

Decreasing Hospitalization In Infants, William Hang

MSN Capstone Projects

Infants are the most vulnerable population at risk for serious diseases. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a disease that can be detrimental in infants because of their immature lungs and immune system. Palivizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody medication, given every 28-30 days has been shown to reduces RSV symptoms and decrease rates of hospitalization by 15%. By reducing the rate of hospital stay, it will also reduce cost.

First Trimester Prenatal Screening: Parent Education, Madison Vandiver Apr 2020

First Trimester Prenatal Screening: Parent Education, Madison Vandiver

Honors College Theses

The healthcare field is constantly evolving, and consequently the ways that medical procedures are done is always changing. Advancements in medicine have made it possible to screen for chromosomal abnormalities earlier and for the screening to be done more accurately than ever before. This is accomplished through a first trimester screening performed between 11- 13 weeks gestation of the pregnancy. With this screening becoming more integrated into routine prenatal care and being offered to various women with a range of risk factors, it is important to offer many educational opportunities about the screening procedure. Provision of education to patients interested …

Dancing During Labor: Social Media Trend Or Future Practice?, Caroline P. Toberna, Drew Horter, Kayla Heslin, Marie M. Forgie, Emily Malloy, Jessica J. F. Kram

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Over the past 30 years, medical interventions in pregnancy and childbirth have increased. Some pregnant women seek less invasive and nonpharmacological options to manage discomforts during labor. While exercise during pregnancy is recommended, less is known about exercise, specifically dancing, during labor. While anecdotal evidence is supportive, little is known about the implications of exercise and dance during the first stage of labor for pain reduction and labor progression. Some movements common in dance, such as expanding hip circles that loosen and relax muscles of the pelvic floor, may be beneficial to women during labor. Available evidence suggests that dancing …

Nurses' And Midwives' Experiences As Mentors In A Clinical Mentorship Program In Rwanda, Marie Chantal Murekatete Apr 2020

Nurses' And Midwives' Experiences As Mentors In A Clinical Mentorship Program In Rwanda, Marie Chantal Murekatete

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In Rwanda, the provision of maternal and child health care is often hindered by gaps in health care providers’ (HCP) knowledge and skills, and the management of pregnancy-related complications in health facilities. These factors contribute to maternal and child mortality rates (MMR). To help respond to the gaps, the Training Support and Access Model (TSAM) project implemented a practice-based clinical mentorship program (CMP) in the Northern and Southern provinces of Rwanda that involved mentors supporting mentees’ professional development to strengthen nurses’ and midwives’ capacity to provide knowledgeable maternal and child health care.

This qualitative descriptive study aimed to explore nurses’ …

“Save My Baby”: The Lived Experience Of Hospitalized Pregnant Women With A Threat Of Preterm Birth, Dua' Yousef Al-Maharma, Inaam A. Khalaf, Fathieh Abu-Moghli, Sajeda Alhamory

The Qualitative Report

Activity restriction in hospital to prevent preterm birth (PTB) is widely used as the first step of treatment. It is associated with adverse physiological and psychological effects on maternal and fetal health that might persist years after birth. A sample of 10 pregnant women who were hospitalized for being at risk for PTB were purposively recruited to describe their lived experience via semi-structured in-depth interview. Five themes were identified, the maternal role establishment and suspending responsibilities, the women's perception of fear of uncertainty and finding support, dissatisfaction of care, the change of routine life and family relationships, and the cultural …

Effects Of Maternal Chemotherapy On Fetal And Childhood Development, Payton May Apr 2020

Effects Of Maternal Chemotherapy On Fetal And Childhood Development, Payton May

Honors Theses

The diagnosis of cancer during pregnancy is uncommon. It is estimated that only 3,500 cases of cancer during pregnancy are diagnosed each year, which correlates to one case per 1,000 pregnancies (Pavlidis, 2000). The management of cancer during pregnancy is complex since it involves both the expecting mother and the fetus. Although there are several treatment options available, they are commonly aggressive. The diagnosis of cancer during pregnancy can create dilemmas for patients and health care providers. Pregnant women may be hesitant to receive cancer treatment due to the potential effects it may have on their developing fetus. On the …

Promoting Newborn Skin-To-Skin Contact To Increase Breastfeeding Initiation And Exclusivity In Cesarean Deliveries, Eunide L. Joseph Apr 2020

Promoting Newborn Skin-To-Skin Contact To Increase Breastfeeding Initiation And Exclusivity In Cesarean Deliveries, Eunide L. Joseph

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

Background: Literature has documented when a mother elects to breastfeed, she offers herself and her baby with many short and long-term wellness and health benefits. Therefore, maternal child healthcare providers should be prompted to scale up breastfeeding practices that promote lactation. Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is underutilized, yet a cost-effective incentive to promote successful breastfeeding. Traditional postnatal assessments lead to the precipitous disconnect of the mother-baby dyad resulting in delayed SSC and breastfeeding initiation. In addition, practical barriers and delivery complications familiar to cesarean sections, postpones the start of breastfeeding in this birthing method which unfavorably impacts exclusivity. In such instances, …

The Social Dimensions Of Reproductive Health: Analyzing Disparities In Morocco Through Health Indicators And Social Determinants, Mila Sicorsky Apr 2020

The Social Dimensions Of Reproductive Health: Analyzing Disparities In Morocco Through Health Indicators And Social Determinants, Mila Sicorsky

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper explores the social dimensions of reproductive health in Morocco through a look at its health indicators and social determinants. Existing literature discusses reproductive health differences that run on economic, social, and cultural lines. In this paper, I shed light on how best to measure and understand these disparities. The research shows that reproductive health in Morocco is most accurately indicated by maternal mortality rates (MMR), access to prenatal and postnatal visits, and access to adequate family planning. It also finds that location of residence, economic status, and women’s status are key social determinants of reproductive health in Morocco. …

Choosing A Vaginal Birth After A Cesarean Rather Than A Repeat Elective Cesarean Delivery, Sydney Carter Mar 2020

Choosing A Vaginal Birth After A Cesarean Rather Than A Repeat Elective Cesarean Delivery, Sydney Carter

Scholars Week

The VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) rate has been increasing over the recent years. However, it is still a much lower rate as compared to 1996. During this time uterine rupture instances and maternal mortality rates were found to have increased. As a result, facilities over corrected and stopped offering VBACs as an option. Current research shows they are actually safer than a cesarean but most facilities do not offer this option. The purpose of this policy change is to increase the rate of VBACs by providing good education to expectant mothers through their nurses.

Factors Associated With First Antenatal Care Booking Among Pregnant Women At A Reproductive Health Clinic In Tanzania: A Cross Sectional Study, Lucy Kisaka, Sebalda Leshabari

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Background: Antenatal care (ANC) is a key basic intervention targeting maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the first ANC booking before 12 weeks of gestation. This enhances positive maternal and fetal outcomes through early detection of complications, prompt treatment, referral, and management of expected physiological changes. Despite high ANC coverage (98%), free contacts, and easy accessibility, little is known why few (24%) pregnant women in Tanzania book their first ANC-visit early. This study aimed to identify factors associated with first ANC booking among pregnant women in a Tanzanian reproductive health clinic.

Methods: Systematic …

High-Fidelity Simulation And Clinical Judgment Of Nursing Students In A Maternal-Newborn Course, Carol Reid, Jody L. Ralph, Maher El-Masri, Katrice Ziefle

Nursing Faculty Scholarship

Clinical judgment, one’s ability to think like a nurse, is an essential skill for safe nursing practice. With the rise of simulation to replace clinical experiences, there is limited evidence regarding the effectiveness of simulation on the development of clinical judgment. This study explored differences in clinical judgment in maternal–newborn courses between undergraduate nursing students participating exclusively in simulation and those participating in hospital-based clinical experiences. Following completion of the clinical rotation, students participated in an evaluative maternal–newborn high-fidelity simulation experience that was recorded and evaluated using the Lasater’s Clinical Judgment Rubric (2007). Lasater’s Clinical Judgment Rubric scores between the …

The Lived Experience Of Pregnancy As A Black Woman In America: A Descriptive Phenomenological Case Study, Jodie C. Gary, Sharon L. Dormire, Jamil Norman, Idethia S. Harvey Drph

Journal of Interprofessional Practice and Collaboration

PURPOSE: Health disparities in childbearing black women in the United States have continued through multiple decades despite overall improvements in pregnancy-related outcomes for other ethnicities. Pregnancy outcomes for black women include greater risks of maternal mortality, severe morbidity, as well as preterm and low birthweight infants. From a person-centered perspective, the description of the lived experiences of adversity for pregnant black women is missing from the literature. This omission is believed to attribute to the continued health disparities in this population.

METHODS: While the study was originally designed using focus group methodology for data collection for a larger number of …
