Variability In Selecting Lateral Cephalometric Landmarks In Two Cbct Image Modes, Dana Nguyen Dec 2006

Variability In Selecting Lateral Cephalometric Landmarks In Two Cbct Image Modes, Dana Nguyen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the variability of lateral cephalometric landmark selection in two cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) lateral cephalometric simulations: 1) a mean projection image (MPI) and 2) a serial sagittal slice image (SSSI).

Methods: A MPI is a two-dimensional (2D) image obtained from the NewTom 3GTM CBCT that resembles the conventional lateral cephalogram. A SSSI is a 2D image also obtained from CBCT data, but is created by superimposing a series of selected thin sagittal slices containing the required cephalometric landmarks. This study compared the Ricketts and Steiner analysis of the MPI …

Mri And Mrv In Cerebral Venous Thrombosis, Zafar Sajjad Nov 2006

Mri And Mrv In Cerebral Venous Thrombosis, Zafar Sajjad

Department of Radiology

Although Cerebral venous thrombosis is an uncommon cause of stroke among the young, it is being increasingly recognised. A prothrombotic risk factor is identified in the majority of the patients. In most instances it is seen in women in the post-partum period and those on oral contraceptives. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has improved our ability to diagnose this condition however the variability of radiological and clinical presentation remains a challenge. MR in combination with MR venography (MRV) is the single most sensitive diagnostic technique. The MR appearance of the thrombus within the dual sinus or cortical vein is variable and …

Mechanism Of Neuronal Injury In Cerebral Venous Thrombosis, Uzma Usman, Mohammad Wasay Nov 2006

Mechanism Of Neuronal Injury In Cerebral Venous Thrombosis, Uzma Usman, Mohammad Wasay

Department of Medicine

The impact of CVT on the brain is wide spectrum, ranging from completely normal parenchyma to brain oedema and/or haemorrhage. Multiple factors relate to neuronal injury in CVT including; dural sinus pressure, increased venous flow velocities, collateralization of venous channels, rate of occlusion, development of cytotoxic and vasogenic oedema, recanalization and accelerated myelination. It is suggested that recanalization of occluded vein, as well as, the presence or absence and the efficiency of intracranial venous collaterals, may have an impact on the extent of brain tissue damage and hence the prognosis of acute CVT.

Cerebral Venous System Anatomy, Muhammad Azeem Uddin, Tanveer Ul Haq, Muhammad Zafar Rafique

Department of Radiology

Cerebral venous system can be divided into a superficial and a deep system. The. superficial system comprises of sagittal sinuses and cortical veins and these drain superficial surfaces of both cerebral hemispheres. The deep system comprises of lateral sinus, straight sinus and sigmoid sinus along with draining deeper cortical veins. Both these systems mostly drain themselves into internal jugular veins. The veins draining the brain do not follow the same course as the arteries that supply it. Generally, venous blood drains to the nearest venous sinus, except in the case of that draining from the deepest structures, which drain to …

Computed Tomographic Imaging Of Cerebral Venous Thrombosis, Mohammad Kamran Kamal Nov 2006

Computed Tomographic Imaging Of Cerebral Venous Thrombosis, Mohammad Kamran Kamal

Department of Radiology

Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is an entity which is not rare and can have devastating consequences if not diagnosed and treated in a timely manner. Although, the gold standard for diagnosing this entity is a catheter angiogram, magnetic resonance venography, by virtue of its non-invasiveness and detailed demonstration of the cerebral venous structures, has become the diagnostic modality of choice for this entity. However, in a resource-strapped country like Pakistan, CT scan remains the primary first (and sometimes the only) diagnostic modality used in patients with neurological problems. Therefore, it is important to recognize the signs of cerebral venous thrombosis …

Sixty-Four-Slice Multidetector Computed Tomography: The Future Of Ed Cardiac Care, Alexander T. Limkakeng, Ethan Halpern, Kevin M. Takakuwa

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) imaging, a technological advance over traditional CT, is a promising possible alternative to cardiac catheterization for evaluating patients with chest pain in the emergency department (ED). In comparison with traditional CT, MDCT offers increased spatial and temporal resolution that allows reliable visualization of the coronary arteries. In addition, a "triple scan," which includes evaluation for pulmonary embolism and thoracic aortic dissection, can be incorporated into a single study. This test will enable emergency physicians to rapidly evaluate patients for life-threatening illnesses and may allow safer and earlier discharges of many patients with chest pain in comparison …

Influence Of Common Orthodontic Appliances On Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Joseph Matthew Elison Sep 2006

Influence Of Common Orthodontic Appliances On Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Joseph Matthew Elison

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an essential diagnostic tool in modern medicine. Conditions such as cerebral vascular accidents, epilepsy and other seizure disorders, autism, cancer, migraine and cluster headaches benefit from its use. It has been discovered that 4-10% of all children and adolescents will experience a seizure at some point (Hauser, 1994) and MRI is one of the most common imaging modalities for seizure and epilepsy diagnosis. Unfortunately, some orthodontic materials cause distortion on MR images. Radiologists would probably require the removal of any distortion-causing orthodontic appliance prior to MR imaging. It is questionable whether radiologists would be comfortable …

The Effect Of Hus1 On Ionizing Radiation Sensitivity Is Associated With Homologous Recombination Repair But Is Independent Of Non-Homologous End-Joining, Robert S. Weiss, Xiang Wang, Baocheng Hu, Ya Wang Jul 2006

The Effect Of Hus1 On Ionizing Radiation Sensitivity Is Associated With Homologous Recombination Repair But Is Independent Of Non-Homologous End-Joining, Robert S. Weiss, Xiang Wang, Baocheng Hu, Ya Wang

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Mammalian Hus1 plays an important role in maintaining genomic integrity. Cells lacking mouse Hus1 are hypersensitive to DNA damage inducers including UV and camptothecin (CPT). By using clonogenic assay, we show here that Hus1 deficient mouse cells are hypersensitive to ionizing radiation (IR) compared with their Hus1-positive counterparts. However, these cells show similar induction levels and similar rejoining rates of DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) following IR, indicating that the effect of Hus1 on cell radiosensitivity is independent of non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ). By combining an I-SceI-induced-DNA DSBs system and a siRNA approach, we also show that knocking down Hus1 decreases …

Tuberculosis Of The Scapula, Yousuf A. Husen, Naila Nadeem, Fawad Aslam, Muhammad Ali Shah

Department of Radiology

Tuberculosis (TB) of the scapula is an extremely rare presentation of osteoarticular tuberculosis. In a tuberculosis endemic setting with a rising burden of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, this rare presentation may become more frequent. The common presentation is with longstanding Complaints of pain and swelling in the shoulder region, typically in young adults. Classic radiographic features include a well defined radiolucent lesion with minimal sequesteration. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate is usually elevated and initially these patients are frequently mis-diagnosed and thus a high index of clinical suspicion is required. Medical therapy with antituberculous drugs is the standard modality of treatment. This …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Magnetic resonance (MR)-guided near-infrared spectral tomography was developed and used to image adipose and fibroglandular breast tissue of 11 normal female subjects, recruited under an institutional review board-approved protocol. Images of hemoglobin, oxygen saturation, water fraction, and subcellular scattering were reconstructed and show that fibroglandular fractions of both blood and water are higher than in adipose tissue. Variation in adipose and fibroglandular tissue composition between individuals was not significantly different across the scattered and dense breast categories. Combined MR and near-infrared tomography provides fundamental molecular information about these tissue types with resolution governed by MR T1 images.

Extra [Corrected] Pulmonary Uptake Of Tc-99m-Maa Perfusion Lung Scan As A Result Of Right To Left Intra Cardiac Shunt, Riffat Hussain, Maseeh-Uz-Zaman, Sohail Abrar Khan, M Nadeem Ahmad

Department of Radiology

Extra pulmonary accumulation of Tc-99m-macroaggregate of albumin (MAA) is rarely seen on perfusion lung scan, and has been reported in less than 4% of a study population of nearly 380 patients. It occurs when the agent bypasses the lungs due to a right to left (R-L) cardiac or pulmonary shunt, when it is shunted to the portal vein before reaching the right atrium and ventricle of the heart, and when the agent is degraded to a submicron particle size. When a pharmaceutical problem is excluded, extra-pulmonary uptake implies unusual hemodynamics with a shunt. A case is reported in which a …

Abstract

Background

New cancer therapeutic strategies must be investigated that enhance prostate cancer treatment while minimizing associated toxicities. We have previously shown that genistein, the major isoflavone found in soy, enhanced prostate cancer radiotherapy in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we investigated the cellular and molecular interaction between genistein and radiation using PC-3 human prostate cancer cells.

Methods

Tumor cell survival and progression was determined by clonogenic analysis, flow cytometry, EMSA analysis of NF-κB, and western blot analysis of cyclin B1, p21WAF1/Cip1, and cleaved PARP protein.

Results

Genistein combined with radiation caused greater inhibition in PC-3 …

Colonie polyps appear like elliptical protrusions on the inner wall of the colon. Curvature based features for colonie polyp detection have proved to be successful in several computer-aided diagnostic CT colonography (CTC) systems. Some simple thresholds are set for those features for creating initial polyp candidates, sophisticated classification scheme are then applied on these polyp candidates to reduce false positives. There are two objective functions, the number of missed polyps and false positive rate, that need to be minimized when setting those thresholds. These two objectives conflict and it is usually difficult to optimize them both by a gradient search. …
