Measured Effects Of Rapid Palatal Expansion On Nasal Cavity Volume Utilizing Cbct, Jon Neal Robinson Dec 2003

Measured Effects Of Rapid Palatal Expansion On Nasal Cavity Volume Utilizing Cbct, Jon Neal Robinson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to evaluate and predict the expected changes that occur in the nasal cavity volume following rapid palatal expansion. Eighteen subjects (11 female, 7 male), ages 9 to 18, requiring rapid palatal expansion in conjunction with comprehensive orthodontic treatment, were selected for the study. Rapid palatal expansion was accomplished using the standard, banded hyrax appliance. Three-dimensional cone beam computed tomograms using the NewTom 9000™ were acquired before and after expansion. Serial coronal slices of the nasal cavity were made using the QV9000™ software program. The resultant serial images were imported into 3-D Doctor™ for analysis …

Interpreting Hemoglobin And Water Concentration, Oxygen Saturation, And Scattering Measured In Vivo By Near-Infrared Breast Tomography, Subhadra Srinivasan, Brian W. Pogue, Shudong Jiang, Hamid Dehghani, Christine Kogel, Sandra Soho, Jennifer J. Gibson, Tor D. Tosteson, Steven P. Poplack, Keith D. Paulsen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Near-infrared spectroscopic tomography was used to measure the properties of 24 mammographically normal breasts to quantify whole-breast absorption and scattering spectra and to evaluate which tissue composition characteristics can be determined from these spectra. The absorption spectrum of breast tissue allows quantification of (i) total hemoglobin concentration, (ii) hemoglobin oxygen saturation, and (iii) water concentration, whereas the scattering spectrum provides information about the size and number density of cellular components and structural matrix elements. These property data were tested for correlation to demographic information, including subject age, body mass index, breast size, and radiographic …

The Radiopacity Of 29 Resin Restorative Materials Compared To Enamel, Peter Lubisich Iv Sep 2003

The Radiopacity Of 29 Resin Restorative Materials Compared To Enamel, Peter Lubisich Iv

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The radiodensity of a composite resin can greatly influence a clinician's ability to analyze a restoration for failure. The purpose of this study was to determine the relative radiopacities of 29 resin restorative materials compared to enamel, and to verify the comparable radiopacity between shades of 23 of the restorative composite resin materials. Composite resin discs measuring >5mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness were made and polymerized. Radiographs were taken of the composite resin discs, which included an aluminum step wedge for calibration and a densitometer was used to measure the radiodensity of the composite resin samples. The …

Quantification Of Bone Deposition In Onlay Bone Grafting, Gregory Alan Kammeyer Sep 2003

Quantification Of Bone Deposition In Onlay Bone Grafting, Gregory Alan Kammeyer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate; 1) mandibular posterior mono-cortical block onlay bone graft success rates 2) the amount of grafted bone retained after initial resorption in radiographic projections. Seven consecutive patients with 14 mandibular posterior implant sites requiring bone augmentation for implants of a standard 3.8mm x 10mm dimension were sought. Mono-cortical block bone grafts from the ipsilateral ascending ramus were placed then observed with two standardized CT scans, dividing them into two groups: Group A had the first CT at 4 weeks after graft placement and a second taken before Prosthodontic reconstruction, 36.7 weeks later. …

Assessment Of Alveolar Bone Density Using Implant Insertion Resistance Torque, Scott Sangmoo Lee Sep 2003

Assessment Of Alveolar Bone Density Using Implant Insertion Resistance Torque, Scott Sangmoo Lee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background: Implant stability during healing is a pre-requisite for successful osseointegration. In the case of early or immediate implant loading, it is necessary to achieve high level of stabilization during surgical placement. Fixture stabilization can be measured by resonance frequency analysis or implant insertion resistance torque measurement. The aim of this study is to correlate pre-operative radiographic bone density to implant insertion resistance torque in human cadaver jaw bone.

Materials & Methods: Sixty-four implant osteotomy sites in human cadaver jaw bones were previously examined radiographically using quantitative computed tomography (QCT) and quantitative cone-beam computed tomography (QCBCT). Forty-two implant insertion sites …

Diagnosis Of Pulmonary Embolism With Helical Ct Scan, M U. Usman, V Bari, Javed Yakoob, Murad M. Khan Dr.

Department of Radiology

Objective: To determine the role of helical C.T. scan in the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism.SETTING: Radiology department, Aga Khan University Hospital. One year prospective study May 2001 to May 2002.Methods: Sixty patients suspected of having pulmonary embolism were included in this study. Helical C.T. scan chest was performed from aortic arch to lung bases with intravenous contrast medium. Images were acquired in mediastinal and lung windows. Image interpretation was performed on the console and hard copies for main branch and segmental thrombus. Results: Fifteen patients were diagnosed of having pulmonary embolism on C.T. scan. Clinical correlation and follow up with pulmonary …

Radiosurgery For The Control Of Glomus Jugulare Tumours, Muhammad Ehsan Bari, A A. Kemeny, D M C Forster, M W. Radatz

Section of Neurosurgery

Objective: To ascertain the efficacy of stereotactic radiosurgery (gamma knife) for the control of glomus jugulare tumours.
Method: Between March 1994 and December 1997 we treated eight patients of glomus jugulare tumour with radiosurgery. These patients have been followed for more than four years (range 52 to 97 months). The age of the patients ranged between 32-64 years (mean 53 years). The male: female ratio was 3:5. Three patients had previously undergone surgery and one had unsuccessful embolization. The dose applied to tumour margin ranged between 16-25 Gy (median 25 Gy). Patients were followed up with yearly MRI scans and …

Radiologic Feeding Gastrostomy Placement: Experience In 23 Patients, T U. Haq, S M F Mosharraf, B Ahmad, K Munir, J Yaqoob, U Usman

Department of Radiology

Objective: To evaluate the safety, efficacy and complications of percutaneous gastrostomy catheter placementunder flouro guidance for long-term enteral feeding.MATERIALS AND Methods: Between April 1998 to May 2002, 23 patients who had percutaneous gastrostomy catheter placement were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical indications for catheter placement included patients with neurologic disease, head and neck malignancy, and pulmonary disease patients. Placement of 12 - 14 Fr gastrostomy catheter was then accomplished with the Seldinger technique. The technical success, procedural complications were recorded. Results: Twenty seven procedures, including revisions, were performed. The success rate for catheter placement was 100%. Revision was necessary in 7 (30%) instances …
