Racial Disparities In Palliative Care Utilization In The Covid-19 Pandemic, Margaret S. Bove, Benjamin Huber, Myles Hardeman, Daniel Harris, Areeba Jawed, Amber Comer

Medical Student Research Symposium

BACKGROUND

Palliative care is a vital resource for the critically or terminally ill. It has myriad benefits such as improved quality of life, reduced depressive symptoms, and decreased scarce resource utilization. Self-identified Black/African patients, however, are less likely to utilize advanced care directives or engage in hospice/comfort care measures and are more likely to prefer intensive treatment at the end of life. There is no research, however, on how the COVID-19 pandemic may have affected these trends.

METHODS

A retrospective cohort study of patients who experienced in hospital mortality or in hospital hospice due to COVID-19 between March 2020 – …

Exploring The Hinterland: The Development Of A Person-Centered Music Therapy Method For A Hospice Patient With Lewy Body Dementia, Paige Chaplin

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This thesis explores the development and implementation of a music therapy method with an individual diagnosed with dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) receiving home hospice services. There is very little known about the effect of music therapy on patients diagnosed with DLB. Informed by Tom Kitwood’s Person-Centered Care (PCC) philosophy for dementia care, Yumiko Sato’s Musical Life Review (MLR) model, and Lisa Kelly and Bill Ahessy’s Reminiscence-Focused Music Therapy (RFMT) model, a clinical method was developed to explore the effects of person-centered music therapy on reminiscence, caregiver connection, and identity. I drew inspiration from music therapy concepts by Tony Wigram …

Integrating Palliative Care In A Family Nurse Practitioner Curricula - Post Survey Data, Betty Lang, Susan Montgomery, Ellen P. Moore, Amanda Townsend

MSN Project Data

There is a growing need to integrate Palliative Care in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) curricula. Due to increasing costs in an already overstretched healthcare system, a large portion of primary care is delivered by FNPs, often to older or sicker patients. Therefore, it is imperative that FNPs receive formal educational and professional preparation regarding palliative care resources. One of the Core concepts presented by The American Association of Colleges of Nursing's Essentials: Core Concepts for Professional Nursing Education (2021) is palliative care, as are hospice and supportive care. Graduate Competencies and Recommendations for Educating nursing Students (G-CARES) further describe advanced-level …

The Use Of A Pediatric Palliative And Hospice Education Module To Enhance The Knowledge And Practice Of Emergency Room Providers, Morgan Garrett Jan 2022

The Use Of A Pediatric Palliative And Hospice Education Module To Enhance The Knowledge And Practice Of Emergency Room Providers, Morgan Garrett

DNP Projects

Background: Palliative and hospice care resources are underutilized in pediatric patients with chronic and life-limiting illnesses. One contributing factor is the lack of formalized education for medical providers regarding the differences and scope of palliative and hospice care models. Without adequate education about these services, providers are not able to effectively utilize otherwise available resources to provide holistic care.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the current perception of knowledge among providers pertaining to pediatric palliative and hospice care. The study investigated improvements in educational outcomes in ten categories after participation in a web-based training. A secondary …

This project was a retrospective review of the medication administration record (MAR) of patients admitted into Sharp Hospice from a Sharp Healthcare facility. Sharp Hospice, in California, USA, admitted 164 patients during August 2020. Of those, 34 patients were eligible for inclusion in this retrospective quality improvement review. Prior to discharge from a Sharp facility, the percentage of target medications …

Palliative Performance Scale As A Prognostic Tool For Patients With Dementia In Hospice, Alexandria Nasr

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

Objective: Palliative and hospice care have been shown to benefit people with dementia and their families. However, for patients with dementia who are nearing the end of life, hospice referral can be challenging because of the difficulty in predicting prognosis. The objective of this retrospective, exploratory study is two-fold: (1) to describe trajectories by analyzing trends in Palliative Performance Scale (PPS) scores for patients admitted to hospice with a neurocognitive disorder from time of enrollment to time of disenrollment and (2) to determine the relationship between PPS and length of stay (LOS) in hospice care.

Methods: The setting for the …

Spiritual Perspective, Mindfulness, And Spiritual Care Practices Of Hospice And Palliative Care Nurses, Patricia Ricci-Allegra May 2015

Spiritual Perspective, Mindfulness, And Spiritual Care Practices Of Hospice And Palliative Care Nurses, Patricia Ricci-Allegra

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Spiritual care is an ethical obligation of the nursing profession and an essential component of palliative care, but is often misunderstood. Lack of conceptual clarity is problematic, for each nurse will provide spiritual care based on his or her understanding of what this care should include.

Regardless of how a nurse defines spiritual care, an important element of spiritual care is what nurses bring of themselves to the patient encounter. Findings from several studies have shown a positive relationship between a nurse’s spiritual perspective and spiritual care practices. Spiritual perspective has increased as a result of participating in programs designed …

Choices Related To Maximizing Quality Of Life At End Of Life, Theresa Lynn May 2015

Choices Related To Maximizing Quality Of Life At End Of Life, Theresa Lynn

Dissertations

Humans, including those residing in the United States, can live in denial of their own mortality. Because of this, futile care is sometimes provided, often at great monetary expense and for little or no return in terms of quality or length of life. At least two opportunities exist for making choices regarding care at the end of life in the U.S.: completing advance directives and choosing hospice care. This dissertation consists of three studies related to this topic. The first is a quantitative study about advance directives and attitude toward death. The advance directive completion rate among adults in the …

Uncovering Meanings Of Death, Trauma, And Loss As Experienced By Hospice Bereavement Coordinators: A Phenomenological Study, Rochelle S. Clarke

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

This study examined the experiences of Hospice Bereavement Coordinators (HBCs) and Hospice Chaplains working with grief narratives from patient-family units exhibiting signs of anticipatory or complicated grief. While a significant amount of research has been conducted on Hospice employees, no qualitative studies have examined the interpretation of meaning from employees whose primary role focused on the psychosocial-spiritual aspects of clients exhibiting anticipatory or complicated grief. The researcher identified shared meaning of death, trauma, and loss from six participants in the context of a high stress and high loss environment. This study‘s findings revealed ten central themes: Death is an earthly …
