Spring 2024 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
This poster is an overview of an occupational therapy program developed at a Women's Health OBGYN Clinic in Texas. The program was designed to address the needs of women with high-risk pregnancy and focused on mental health, physical health, energy conservation, emotional regulation, and social participation. The findings indicate the needs for further research to understand how occupational therapy can support women's health and an expansion of program offerings to increase support for high-risk pregnancy.

‘Mama May I?’: A Comprehensive Guide To Inform Occupational Therapy Practitioners For The Wellness Of Black Pregnant Women, Tavia Williams, Angela Blackwell, Aminee Alexander
Spring 2024 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Black women are facing a decline in well-being because health providers do not understand how pregnancy impacts them differently than other race in the United States. This population is dying at a rate 3-4 more times than white, Asian, and Hispanic women. These deaths are preventable as many stem from racism and bias in medicine (Markin & Coleman, 2023). Historically, occupational therapists have not been included in the care of pregnant women due to the exclusive team of obstetric providers, doulas, and midwives (Rost et al., 2023). Because the United States primarily utilizes the medical model for perinatal healthcare, pregnant …

North Texas Research Forum 2024
The prevalence of obesity in women of reproductive age (20 to 39) in the US is 39.7%. It has been estimated that one-quarter of pregnancy complications are attributable to maternal obesity. Comprehensive prenatal care is imperative to achieving positive health outcomes. This quality improvement (QI) initiative aimed to improve antenatal fetal surveillance rates in patients with class III obesity. Evidence based interventions to test fetal wellbeing were implemented and examined over a 7 month time period to evaluate physician compliance of the standard of care for antenatal surveillance starting at 34 weeks gestation. Following implementation of this initiative, compliance with …

North Texas Research Forum 2024
OBJECTIVE: Anemia in pregnancy is a global health problem and complicates >40% of pregnancies. Anemia is associated with significant maternal and fetal complications including low birth weight, preterm delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, ICU admissions, need for blood transfusion, and maternal morbidity. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the CDC recommend screening for anemia at the first prenatal visit and again between 24 and 28 weeks gestation. The aim of this quality improvement project is to improve compliance of screening for anemia in pregnancy amongst the providers of Medical City Women's Care. METHODS: Using the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) quality improvement …

Four Cesarean Scar Pregnancies Managed At Accreta Center Of Excellence At Medical City Dallas Hospital: A Case Series, Ana Adams, Nicole Tenzel, Monica Rodriguez, Robert Cohen
North Texas Research Forum 2024
Cesarean Scar Pregnancy results from pathologic implantation of a gestational sac into a hysterotomy scar. This rare disease continues to increase in incidence due to the rise of Cesarean delivery in the United States. Current management recommendations by the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine (SMFM) include termination of pregnancy, or in rare instances, hysterectomy. This case series examines four patients diagnosed with Cesarean Scar Pregnancies that either declined termination or were unable to receive abortion services in the first trimester, and who were managed at the Accreta Center of Excellence at Medical City Dallas Hospital. This novel management strategy included …

Radiation cystitis (RC) is a debilitating adverse side effect of pelvic radiation therapy. Despite advancements within the field of radiation oncology, the location of the bladder makes it difficult to avoid during radiation and approximately 5-10% of cancer survivors with a history of pelvic radiation are at risk. While RC is not common, the long-term effects can be crippling and we hope to provide more information on the risk factors to help survivors and inform clinicians.

North Texas Research Forum 2023
This is a report of a 36-year-old female who presented with severe, acute onset pelvic pain and prominent bruising on her left groin area following intercourse. Transvaginal ultrasound revealed the presence of a left ovarian cyst and lack of arterial blood flow to the left ovary, indicating the possibility of a left ovarian torsion. The patient underwent diagnostic laparoscopy with left oophorectomy. However, during the procedure an aberrant vessel was identified branching from the left IP ligament, running through the inguinal canal, and terminating at the anterior abdominal wall. Intraoperatively the vessel was ligated, and the patient ultimately recovered without …

Platelets In Preeclamptic Pregnancies Fail To Exhibit The Decrease In Mitochondrial Oxygen Consumption Rate Seen In Normal Pregnancies, Joseph Kim, Andrew Malinow, Rosemary Schuh
North Texas Research Forum 2023
Cellular oxygen consumption and lactate production rates have been measured in both placental and myometrial cells to study obstetrics-related disease states such as preeclampsia. Platelet metabolic alterations indicate systemic bioenergetic changes that can be useful as disease biomarkers. We tested the hypothesis that platelet mitochondria display functional alterations in preeclampsia. Platelets were harvested from women in the third trimester of either a healthy, non-preeclamptic or preeclamptic pregnancy, and from healthy, non-pregnant women. Using Seahorse respirometry, we analyzed platelets for oxygen consumption (OCR) and extracellular acidification (ECAR) rates, indicators of mitochondrial electron transport and glucose metabolism, respectively. There was a 37% …

The Effects Of Breastfeeding Education On Working Moms Of Low Socioeconomic Status, Grace Ngo, Suzanne Manseau
Nursing | Student Research Posters
Breastfeeding plays an important role in promoting immunity due to the high concentration of antibodies (Tangsuksan et al., 2020). Immunity is important for the infant the first year of their lives. Women of low socioeconomic status (LSES) are less likely to breastfeed due to a lack of resources (Kebede & Seifu, 2021). In addition LSES women living in Marin often lack the proper resources and education for breastfeeding (Heck et al., 2006). The purpose of this thesis proposal is to investigate if educating pregnant women of low socioeconomic status will increase breastfeeding rates.

Supporting Black Mothers In Health Management Occupations During Prenatal Care: An Online Resource For Occupational Therapists, Aminee Alexander, Mary Smith, Diamond Rashad
Spring 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Black women are disproportionately affected by high maternal morbidity and mortality rates, impacting their ability to perform their role as mothers. Research has shown that close to half of these maternal morbidity and mortality events are preventable, demonstrating that care that employs prevention strategies and supports self-management of conditions is beneficial to lowering the rate at which these events occur. Although maternal health (MH) is an emerging area of practice for the profession, occupational therapists (OTs) are well equipped to provide preventative care to expectant mothers and assist in providing care that can aid in lowering the maternal morbidity and …

The complexity of birth control options significantly impacts women's lives, with hormonal contraceptives being commonly used but often misunderstood. These contraceptives, which contain estrogen and progestin or progestin only, come in various forms such as pills, implants, IUDs, injections, the vaginal ring, and skin patches, offering benefits such as reduced menstrual cramps and ectopic pregnancy risk. However, they can also lead to adverse effects including increased blood pressure, nausea, headaches, breakthrough bleeding, and heightened risk of blood clots, with research indicating a potential link between their use and a decline in mental health. Given the prevalence of depression, particularly in …
