This reflective journey encapsulates the profound impact of my SASAH experiential learning, encompassing roles as an ASE Transition Leader and a USRI intern during my undergraduate years. From fostering academic growth to developing practical skills applicable in professional settings, this program provided unique opportunities for multidimensional learning. Collaboration emerged as a cornerstone, teaching adaptability, resilience, and the nuances of teamwork. Engaging with professionals contributed to workplace insights and personal growth. About Dying And Death: Thanatology's Place In Medical Curriculum, Jill Dombroski

This study explored how healthcare providers engage in advance care planning and end-of-life care conversations. The research explored what shapes their understanding and the extent to which concepts from thanatology they intuitively bring in, explicitly bring in, and maybe fail to recognize. To achieve this, constructivist grounded theory (CGT) methodology guided the design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation of the findings, which allowed for iteration across interviews and analysis with existing theories and data in the literature. The CGT design encouraged further engagement with the literature in an ongoing iterative fashion as well as with the analysis of the data. …

The connection between oral health and other non-communicable chronic conditions—commonly referred in the dental literature as the oral-systemic health connection—emphasizes the role of oral health care on both oral diseases and chronic conditions, particularly in vulnerable populations like the elderly. Medication use and gait impairment are two of the most important risk factors for falls. Several drug classes have been classified as fall risk-increasing drugs (FRIDs). Gait is an important marker of overall health and independence in older adults. The overall aim of this thesis was to examine the relationship between FRIDs and gait performance in older adults through two studies. Firstly, our systematic review of twenty studies on the association between FRIDs and gait performance found that the use of drugs with sedative properties is associated with reduced gait speed. The internationally used 15 item Care Transition Measure (CTM-15) has been primarily used to assess the care transition experience among adults transitioning from acute care to home. Although the CTM-15’s psychometric properties have been established in this population, the ability of the CTM-15 to reliably discriminate a good from a bad care transition experience among older adults (60 or more years of age) moving from an inpatient rehabilitation setting to home is unclear. BACKGROUND: The aging population is rapidly increasing, where currently in North America, the population of older adults (ages 60+) outnumbers the population of children. Falls are a major concern for older adults and their quality of life. Cognitive impairment has been shown to be declined in older adults at-risk for falls, but working memory has not been thoroughly investigated within this population. PURPOSE: To examine differences in Non-Fallers, Moderate Risk for Falls, and Fallers in a working memory task using electroencephalography (EEG). Although the Canadian Best Practice Recommendations for Stroke Care recommend all acute stroke patients be screened for malnutrition within 48 hours of admission to hospital using a valid screening tool, none have been validated for use in adult acute stroke patients. The Canadian Nutrition Screening Tool (CNST) tool has been validated within medicine and surgery patients. Dementia is a syndrome that is progressive, degenerative and terminal. The palliative care philosophy aims to maximize quality of life for the dying individual and has been recognized in the literature as being both beneficial and under-used in persons dying with dementia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of staff delivering palliative care to individuals with dementia to determine how care was delivered, to learn which assessment tools were used, and whether policies were affected the delivery of palliative care. BACKGROUND: Hip fractures are expensive and a frequent cause of morbidity and mortality in the elderly. In most studies hip fractures have been viewed as a unitary fracture but recently the two main types of fracture (intertrochanteric and subcapital) have been viewed as two fractures with a different etiology and requiring a different approach to prevention. The relative proportion of intertrochanteric fractures increases with age in women. In previous studies no particular pattern in men has been noted.
