The Evil Twin: The Case Of Heterotopic Pregnancy, Rashmi Jadhav, Vegas Brown, Gabriel Cabrera
West Florida Division Virtual Research Day 2020
- Heterotopic pregnancy occurs in about 1 in 30,000 naturally conceived pregnancies (5). The risk rises 1-3% for pregnancies occurring through assisted reproductive technologies (ART) (1).
- Isolated ectopic pregnancy affects an average of 1 in every 150 live births (1).
- A known pre-existing intrauterine pregnancy (IUP) can be falsely reassuring and delay the diagnosis of a potentially life-threatening concurrent ectopic pregnancy.
- Presentation is vague and 45% of patients have no symptoms (5).
- Differential Diagnoses: endometritis, incomplete miscarriage, ruptured ovarian cyst, non-GYN cause (ie: appendicitis or UTI).
- Risk Factors: Infertility treatment, in vitro fertilization (IVF), prior ectopic, prior tubal surgery, use of …

Biology is unique from other science disciplines in that concepts taught in core classes can inform our student’s understanding of sex and gender. A biology major encounters lessons on sex determination, sexual reproduction, and sex characteristics in their courses. The language used in these units matters. It is imperative that educators consider how the language, examples, and content that we use in classrooms drive (or not) inclusivity for gender- and sexuality-diverse (GSD) (aka LGBTQ+) individuals. We chose to analyze four college-level human anatomy/physiology (AP) textbooks for GSD population inclusivity. We adopted a queer theory framework to critically examine how sex, …
Is A Varicocelectomy Beneficial In The Era Of Assisted Reproductive Technologies, Chukwuka Oscar Nnoli
Is A Varicocelectomy Beneficial In The Era Of Assisted Reproductive Technologies, Chukwuka Oscar Nnoli
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
Clinical varicoceles are the most frequent physical finding associated with infertile men and impaired semen parameters. There is evidence that suggests varicocele repair improves semen parameter and increases the chances of natural pregnancy. Today, varicocele repair is often combined with assisted reproductive techniques (ART) such as intrauterine insemination (IUI), in Vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). In this literature review, data examining whether varicocelectomy before ART leads to improved pregnancy outcomes is reviewed. Current data suggest that there is a significant clinical benefit when correcting a varicocele in oligospermic men before IVF/ICSI. Similarly, men with non-obstructive azoospermia also …

The Association Of Hormonal Contraception With Depression, Pamela Derickson
The Association Of Hormonal Contraception With Depression, Pamela Derickson
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Hormonal contraceptives are widely used by women during their reproductive years. Currently, over 100 million women worldwide use the pill, and 82% of sexually active women in the USA will use oral contraceptive pills at some time during their reproductive years (Carrol, 2017). Oral contraceptive use, especially among adolescents, is associated with subsequent use of antidepressants and a first diagnosis of depression, suggesting depression may be a potential adverse effect of hormonal contraceptive use (Skovlund, 2016). This project focused on educating health care providers at the Community Health Center of Burlington, VT (CHCB) about the association of depression and oral …

"Prenatal stress has been proposed as a risk factor that may have developmental consequences persisting throughout the lifespan. Exposing rodents to stress during pregnancy has consequences for brain development, stress regulation, learning, emotionality (increased anxiety), and social behavior (increased withdrawal) of the offspring (Weinstock, 2001; Chapillon et al., 2002). Additionally, non-human primates who experience stress during pregnancy have offspring with enhanced behavioral reactivity to stressors later in life (Clarke et al., 1994), lowered levels of motor behavior (Schneider, 1992), compromised neuromotor responses (Schneider and Coe, 1993), irritable temperament (Schneider et al., 1992), and attentional problems (Schneider et …
