Chromatin Pattern Quantification For The Differentiation Of White Blood Cells, Paul Young, Ryan Cordner, Abigail Gordhamer Feb 2024

Chromatin Pattern Quantification For The Differentiation Of White Blood Cells, Paul Young, Ryan Cordner, Abigail Gordhamer

Annual Research Symposium

Nuclear chromatin patterns have been used historically to distinguish between different developmental stages and lineages of white blood cells. While it is common to characterize cells based on arbitrary ‘open’ or ‘closed’ chromatin patterns, quantification of chromatin data is lacking. By extracting nuclei from a database of white blood cells and running fractal analyses using TWOMBLI, we were able to produce meaningful data quantifying chromatin patterns. Our data were put through a random forest algorithm which grouped each point based on relationship probability. The algorithm compared immature and mature cell types as well as cells of similar maturity and differing …

The Synergistic Effect Of Loganetin And 5-Fluorouracil On The Carcinogenesis Of Glioblastoma Cancer Cells, Jonathan Wollenberg Apr 2023

The Synergistic Effect Of Loganetin And 5-Fluorouracil On The Carcinogenesis Of Glioblastoma Cancer Cells, Jonathan Wollenberg

ATU Research Symposium

Chemoresistance is a discouraging trend that affects chemotherapeutic agents like 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and leads to decreased efficacy of treatment. This has led to numerous studies into compound synergism. Glioblastomas are a type of lethal cancer that has shown chemoresistance to therapeutic agents such as 5-fluorouracil. Being the most common and lethal primary brain tumor, research on mechanisms of growth inhibition is vastly important (Lustig, 2018). The purpose of this study was to analyze whether 5-fluorouracil and a compound named Loganetin could synergistically inhibit glioblastoma cancer cells. This specific study utilized an extract created from the Lonicera etrusca plant. It was …

Investigating Differences In Iga Antibody Response Against Aspergillus Fumigatus In Wild Type And Tlr7 Protein Deficient Mice, Courtney Folk Apr 2023

Investigating Differences In Iga Antibody Response Against Aspergillus Fumigatus In Wild Type And Tlr7 Protein Deficient Mice, Courtney Folk

Student Academic Conference

Aspergillus fumigatus is a commonly inhaled, respiratory fungal pathogen and an allergen found in flooded indoor environments, household dust, soil, and plant matter. While a competent immune system effectively clears the inhaled fungus, this same fungus poses a significant threat to weakened immune systems due to its potential to invade the lungs, bloodstream and brain tissue. The mouse genome is 99% similar to the human genome and can serve effectively model the effects of inhaled A. fumigatus (Guénet, 2005). Antibodies play a crucial role in neutralizing pathogens and in mediating an allergic response. In this study, we will investigate the …

Antagonistic Pleiotropy In Alzheimer's Disease, Annie Hollis Mar 2023

Antagonistic Pleiotropy In Alzheimer's Disease, Annie Hollis

Undergraduate Research Conference

Apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allele has been linked with Alzheimer’s disease; specifically having two copies of the APOE ε4 allele greatly increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in older age. Studies have attempted to relate an antagonistic pleiotropy hypothesis to this gene, i.e., the ε4 allele has positive effects on cognition and memory in early life and negative effects later in life. Many of these studies have had several limitations and conflicting results, such as testing adults in upper middle age or comparing the absence of the ε4 allele with the presence of at least one ε4 allele. Studies …

The Current State Of Underrepresented Osteopathic Minorities In Competitive Specialties, Emmanuel Oyalabu, Steve Guzman, Dashon Eure, Ezenna Obilor Feb 2023

The Current State Of Underrepresented Osteopathic Minorities In Competitive Specialties, Emmanuel Oyalabu, Steve Guzman, Dashon Eure, Ezenna Obilor

Annual Research Symposium

It is well documented that barriers exist for underrepresented minorities to enter the field of medicine and even more competitive residencies. As defined by the NRMP, competitive specialties include but are not limited to Interventional Radiology, Orthopedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Vascular Surgery, Neurosurgery, Dermatology, and Otornylogy (NRMP-AMA). A large number of osteopathic medical school graduates have a history of going into primary care specialties because many osteopathic medical schools have a primary care focus (Primary Care- Osteopathic Medicine). The emphasis on primary care, whether intentional or not, can foster a less-than-advantageous environment for underrepresented minority students (URM), pursuing …

Adverse Infusion-Related Event Severity In Oncology Patients Receiving Chemotherapy Agents Vs. Immunotherapy Agents, Tayler Hutto Feb 2023

Adverse Infusion-Related Event Severity In Oncology Patients Receiving Chemotherapy Agents Vs. Immunotherapy Agents, Tayler Hutto

Annual Research Symposium

In recent years, immunotherapy investigational drugs in cancer research has been underway in treating multiple forms of cancer due to a lower side effect profile and decreased severe infusion-reaction risk compared to conventional chemotherapy agents. The purpose of this study was to determine the infusion reaction severity among patients receiving either chemotherapy treatment or immunotherapy agents based on the CTCAE (Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events) scale to improve patient care outcomes.

In this intent-to-treat, retrospective observational study, a survey of patients throughout 10 Intermountain Healthcare infusion clinics was conducted to obtain documentation on patients who had received chemotherapy and/or …
