How To Collaborate And Not Just Coexist: An Explanatory Sequential Mixed Methods Study On The Impact Of A Physician And Nurse Interprofessional Education Program On The Development Of Early Career Pediatrician Communication Skills And Collaborative Behaviors Once In Practice, Elizabeth L. Wueste

Theses & Dissertations

Healthcare organizations are challenged to build and develop interprofessional (IP) teams capable of delivering effective patient care (Tang et al., 2018). Historically, these multiple professional roles are not formally educated together but are all expected to work in unison once they enter practice (El-Hanafy, 2018). This lack of relational foundation has led to age-old conflict between the physician and nurse roles on the care team (Stein et al., 1990). This conflict has been attributed to a lack of role definition or an overemphasis on hierarchical structures, poor communication, and the inability of physicians to collaboratively work with their nurse counterparts …

Is Sepsis Hiding In Plain Sight? Implementation Of An Interprofessional (Ip) Sepsis Simulation To Detect Early Sepsis, Sarah Chang, Amanda Bennett, Anne Dean, Meaghan Anderson, Micheline Chipman May 2023

Is Sepsis Hiding In Plain Sight? Implementation Of An Interprofessional (Ip) Sepsis Simulation To Detect Early Sepsis, Sarah Chang, Amanda Bennett, Anne Dean, Meaghan Anderson, Micheline Chipman

Costas T. Lambrew Research Retreat 2023

Early detection of hospital-acquired sepsis can be challenging. With highly effective IP teams and efficient healthcare systems, sepsis treated quickly can influence morbidity and mortality. This project is aimed at training IP teams in early recognition of sepsis using simulation. Nurses and providers rarely have opportunities to learn together. Simulation followed by an IP debrief is an excellent tool to collaborate for safe patient care.

The Environment Of Interprofessional Education In Graduate Education: Exploring Professional Programs Of Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, And Physical Therapy, Allison R. Kaczmarek

Theses and Dissertations

Interprofessional education (IPE) is an educational approach of increasing popularity in professional schools for the preparation of a collaborative ready healthcare workforce. The accrediting bodies of professional education programs in occupational therapy (OT), physician assistant (PA), and physical therapy (PT) have incorporated standards for outcomes addressing IPE. Although they have endorsed the Health Professions Accreditors Collaborative (HPAC) consensus document on quality IPE, we do not have a contemporary snapshot of the IPE environments in the curriculum of their accredited programs. This dissertation, a collection of three distinct inquiries, has two aims: first, to provide a description of IPE as it …

An Interprofessional Public Library-Academic Partnership For Community Outreach On Women's Health, Lyndonna Marrast, Eun Ji Kim, Danielle Ezzo, Joseph Conigliaro

Urban Library Journal

This article describes a collaboration between a branch of the Queens Public Library in NY and an academic medical center that delivered a women’s health educational program with an interprofessional team of faculty, trainees, and students. The team delivered interactive 1-hour long monthly sessions in a Question and Answer format guided by a Powerpoint presentation. The overall goal was to deliver health education workshops on common medical conditions (i.e. diabetes, heart disease) and concerns of interest to women across the lifespan (i.e. infertility, dementia) to improve the health literacy of local community members. We outlined the steps in establishing this …

The Effects Of An Interprofessional Education Video On Dermatologists’ Understanding Of The Role Of The Dermatology Certified Nurse Practitioner, Danielle Elaine Spelich Oct 2022

The Effects Of An Interprofessional Education Video On Dermatologists’ Understanding Of The Role Of The Dermatology Certified Nurse Practitioner, Danielle Elaine Spelich

Doctoral Projects

Dermatology-certified nurse practitioners (DCNPs) have validated knowledge of a dermatology core curriculum and have at least 3,000 hours of formal or informal dermatology training (Dermatology Nurse Practitioner Certification Board [DNPCB], n.d.a). With their standardized education and training, DCNPs are meeting the benchmarks set out by dermatologists. Subsequently, DCNPs have become the new gold standard for dermatology advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs).

However, there is no mention of DCNPs by the American Academy of Dermatology (American Academy of Dermatology [AAD], 2022), and personal experience with dermatologists is that they lack knowledge about DCNPs. This lack of knowledge could create an impasse …

Improving The Interprofessional Relationship Between Nurses And Speech-Langauge Pathologists - Expansion Of A Project, Christina Hamling, Kristy Weissling, Jan Tubbs, Jenna Dubas

UCARE Research Products

The research presented on this poster explored the impact of extraprofessional education on undergraduate nursing and speech-language pathology students with an overall goal of improving the interprofessional relationship between the two fields. Utilizing quantitative and qualitative methods in the form of a pre-test, educational materials, live guided observation, and post-tests, the researchers found an increase in the nursing students ability to identify the role of the speech-language pathologist in a medical setting. There was also an increase in the speech-language pathology student’s ability to understand how and when to communicate with nurses in a medical setting.

Faculty Perceptions Of Readiness To Implement Interprofessional Education In Athletic Training, Meredith M. Parry Jun 2017

Faculty Perceptions Of Readiness To Implement Interprofessional Education In Athletic Training, Meredith M. Parry

Student Dissertations

As the athletic training profession takes steps towards the next level as an allied health care profession, advocates for the profession are positioning athletic trainers as key players in the interprofessional health care team. Recently, the CAATE has pronounced a move for athletic training education to transition all entry-level education to professional master’s degree programs. CAATE is also requesting that athletic training education programs find means to align with other healthcare profession education programs within their institution and actively engage in planned and continuous interprofessional learning activities. This study explored the gap in knowledge regarding athletic training faculty perceptions on …

Investigating The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence And Cultural Intelligence To Attitudes Towards Team-Based Learning In Undergraduate Pre-Health Profession Students, Kevin A. Harris

Theses and Dissertations

Improving patient outcomes has long been the rationale supporting calls to reform health care delivery systems and health profession education programs (Greiner, 2002; Institutes of Medicine, 2001, 2004; O’Neil & Pew Health Professions Commission, 1998). In 2003, the Institute of Medicine shared its vision statement for health professions education, asserting that “[a]ll health professionals should be educated to deliver patient-centered care as members of an interdisciplinary team, emphasizing evidence-based practice, quality improvement approaches and informatics” (Knebel & Greiner, 2003, p. 3).

Despite the importance placed on teamwork in health sciences education, little attention has been devoted to understanding underlying factors …

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The Health Educators Academy at Western Carolina University was developed by the Dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences. Interdisciplinary fellows in the 2015 HEA focused on competency based education (CBE), which naturally incentivizes collaborative, interdisciplinary and interprofessional work. The 2015 Health Educator Academy Fellows researched healthcare competencies and designed curriculum changes that aligned within these parameters. This article discusses the creation of a first-year, interprofessional healthcare course that emphasizes CBE as well as interprofessional practice. Interprofessional Goals: The 2015 Academy Fellows believed that a collaborative course in the first-year curriculum that builds upon integral …
