Background/purpose: Anomalies in human dentition are some of the most common occurrences of congenital abnormalities. Present study aimed to determine the prevalence of hypodontia, hyperdontia and concomitant hypo-hyperdontia (CHH) among patients attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) School of Dental Medicine clinics. Materials and methods: Retrospective search was conducted on patients’ clinical notes in AxiUm. Search included using keywords such as “hypodontia”, “hyperdontia”, “supernumerary teeth” and “congenitally missing”. Panoramic radiographs were used to confirm the hyperdontia, hypodontia or CHH for patients attending the UNLV SDM clinics from 2010 to 2018. Collected data were analyzed using the chi-square test. …

Reliability Of Colour And Hardness Clinical Examinations In Detecting Dentine Caries Severity: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis., Larry Hon, Ahmed Mohamed, Edward Lynch

Dental Medicine Faculty Publications

Dental caries is the most common human infectious disease and is caused by microorganisms producing acids, resulting in changes in dental tissue hardness and colour. However, the accuracy and reliability of dentine colour and hardness as indicators for carious lesion severity has never been assessed in a systematic review. By applying strict criteria, only seven papers (five randomized control trials and two diagnostic studies) were considered for full text qualitative and quantitative assessment. Only three studies produced high quality evidence and only four articles were considered for meta-analysis, as these provided log10 colony forming units (CFU) data from caries biopsies …

The present study analyzed the data concerning the caries prevalence in children born and permanently residing in Chernobyl fallout areas. Setting forth to evaluate if differences regarding the caries prevalence can be observed compared to non-contaminated sites of affected East European countries. Methods used to assess the caries prevalence were limited to DMFT/dmft (decayed, missing and filled teeth) for the primary and the permanent dentitions. The databases PubMed, EMBASE/Ovid, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and eLIBRARY were consulted for the electronic literature search...(Please see text for full abstrast)

Silver Diamine Fluoride Versus Sodium Fluoride For Arresting Dentine Caries In Children: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Alice Trieu, Ahmed Mohamed, Edward Lynch Feb 2019

Silver Diamine Fluoride Versus Sodium Fluoride For Arresting Dentine Caries In Children: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Alice Trieu, Ahmed Mohamed, Edward Lynch

Dental caries can compromise quality of life and is associated with demineralization of tooth structure by organic acids produced by microorganisms. This study systematically reviewed the dentine caries arrest capabilities of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and sodium fluoride (NaF). A comprehensive search strategy was developed to identify the relevant publications in electronic databases and hand searched journals and reviews (to March 2018). By applying strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, only six papers (two randomized controlled trials, two follow-up articles and two secondary statistical analysis studies) were considered for full text qualitative and quantitative assessment. The included studies were critically appraised …

Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial On Bleaching Sensitivity And Whitening Efficacy Of Hydrogen Peroxide Versus Combinations Of Hydrogen Peroxide And Ozone, Mahmoud K. Al-Omiri, Abdullah A. Al Nazeh, Andrej M. Kielbassa, Edward Lynch Feb 2018

Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial On Bleaching Sensitivity And Whitening Efficacy Of Hydrogen Peroxide Versus Combinations Of Hydrogen Peroxide And Ozone, Mahmoud K. Al-Omiri, Abdullah A. Al Nazeh, Andrej M. Kielbassa, Edward Lynch

The clinical efficacy regarding bleaching sensitivity and tooth shade lightening using a standard hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) bleaching gel was compared with the additional use of ozone either before or after application of H2O2. Using computer-generated tables, 45 participants were randomly allocated into three groups (n = 15 each) in this investigator-driven, single-centre trial. In Group 1, upper anterior teeth were bleached using ozone (produced via a healOzone X4 device) for 60 seconds, then 38% H2O2 for 20 minutes; in Group 2, 38% H2O2 application (20 min) was followed by ozone (60 s); air produced by the healOzone machine (60 s) …

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the oral health attitudes and behavior of students in the oral health curriculum in Australia and New Zealand. Materials and Methods: The Hiroshima University ‑ Dental Behavioral Inventory was administered to students in the first (year 1) and final years (year 3) of the oral health curriculum at Charles Sturt University in Australia and the University of Otago in New Zealand. A total of fifty‑two year 1 students and forty‑five year 3 students completed English version of the questionnaire in 2013. The responses were statistically analyzed by Fisher’s exact tests and …

This study aimed to evaluate the use of ozone to treat recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). Consecutive sixty-nine participants with RAS were recruited into this non-randomized double blind, controlled cohort observational study (test group). A control group of 69 RAS patients who matched test group with age and gender was recruited. RAS lesions in test group were exposed to ozone in air for 60 seconds while controls received only air. Ulcer size and pain were recorded for each participant at baseline and daily for 15 days. Ulcer duration was determined by recording the time taken for ulcers to disappear. The main …
