Special Insert: Guideline For Delegation Of Duties For Allied Dental Personnel In Michigan, David Foe Ma
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Dental assistants, registered dental assistants, and registered dental hygienists have specific duties they can perform for patients as outlined by the Michigan Public Health Code and the Michigan Board of Dentistry General Rules. Permitted delegated services vary based on a team member’s level of training, licensure, and available supervision by a licensed dentist.
The Journal of Michigan Dental Association provides this pullout insert to guide the dental team. This easy-to-read chart quickly identifies recent changes to the duties each dental auxiliary can legally perform.

Simulating Implant Procedures In Dentistry, Brandon Patterson
Simulating Implant Procedures In Dentistry, Brandon Patterson
Frameless
The School of Dentistry in partnership with the health sciences library at the University of Utah developed VR simulations for dental implants. The benefits of using the technology included providing endless scenarios, evaluation measures, and experiential learning experiences for students [1]. The school administration found that the simulations kept pace with the requirements of regulatory authorities, helped reduce costs in dental education, and found that students who trained in VR scored significantly better than traditional methods largely due to their ability to repeat tasks and receive instant feedback [2, 3].

The Development Of A Community Based Interdisciplinary Oral Health Care Team, Stephanie De Sam Lazaro
Occupational Therapy Faculty Scholarship
Short AbstractOccupational therapy faculty and students collaborated with an existing community based oral health care team, Ready Set Smile, which provides oral health services and education to children in preschool and elementary school settings. The goals of the project were to expand the oral health knowledge of allied health care workers, to increase knowledge and perceptions of the roles of the interprofessional team members in oral health care services, and to provide family education to the families of children at high risk for unmet dental needs. The preliminary outcomes of all three goal areas of this project will be shared …
Fluoride Varnish Application In The Pediatric Population, Ellen Gnaedinger
Fluoride Varnish Application In The Pediatric Population, Ellen Gnaedinger
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Purpose: The United States (U.S.) has a persistent problem of dental caries in primary teeth with a greater prevalence of dental caries found in minority and poor children. The majority of children in the U.S. experience dental caries in their primary teeth by age eight. This problem could be addressed by primary care providers applying fluoride varnish (FV) to children's teeth starting at the age of primary tooth eruption. The causes of dental caries in children’s primary teeth are multifactorial and therefore require multiple interventions. Around the world providers are utilizing FV as an effective and easily administered strategy. This …

Oral Wellness: Using Occupational Therapy To Enhance Oral Hygiene Delivery In Long-Term Care, Lauryn J. Banovitz, Liberty Bellah, Rosemarie Lion
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Based on current literature, oral health in long-term care (LTC) facilities is frequently of low priority and does not follow evidence-based best practices. Poor oral health reduces the quality of life of older adult residents and patients and can lead to systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, and pneumonia, the leading cause of death in LTC. Occupational therapists can play an instrumental role as oral care consultants, and educators, and can act as resource guides to raise the standards of oral care in LTC facilities.
This capstone project explored ways in which occupational therapy, a profession traditionally designated for …
