Improving Pediatric Oral-Systemic Health Through Motivational Interviewing: An Interprofessional Training Intervention, Oksana Prodan
Improving Pediatric Oral-Systemic Health Through Motivational Interviewing: An Interprofessional Training Intervention, Oksana Prodan
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Introduction: In response to the prevalence of early childhood carries (ECC) in the United States, recommendations were established for pediatric primary care providers to routinely incorporate oral-systemic health promotion services into clinical practice. An interprofessional education project was developed between Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) and dentistry students in San Francisco to assist trainees in the effective delivery of oral systemic health promotion services. Improving health promotion communication skills was identified as an area of need for both sets of learners. Therefore, the IPE activity was designed to incorporate Motivational Interviewing (MI) into the training along with pediatric oral …

Comparison Of Immediate Vs. Delayed Recall Of Orthodontic Information Following An Electronic Reminder, Michael Lenz
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Patients and parents in dentistry often do not remember important information disclosed during the informed consent process, so improvement in the delivery of information is needed. This study explored the effect of an emailed narrated instructional PowerPoint on the immediate vs. delayed recall and comprehension of informed consent information in orthodontics. Thirty-two subjects were recruited from a university and private practice orthodontic clinic. At the initial visit, subjects were alternately assigned to one of two groups and were presented with a mock orthodontic treatment plan and informed consent presentation for a pretend patient. Immediately following the presentation, the subjects’ verbal …

The following is an exerpt from the article:
Guided planning surgery (GPS) programs are a valuable tool for the general dentist to help direct the proper implant orientation in order to prevent errors during the surgical procedure. Software exists that can plan implant and restorative tooth positions, auto-detect nerves, warn of proximity to vital structures, caution against incorrect implant locations, and fabricate surgical guides.

The Aloe vera plant is a succulent known for its rich content in vitamins and minerals, thus gaining popularity over the years in healthcare products. With advancements in alternative medicine, it has been recently found useful in dentistry due to properties such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial actions that contribute to wound healing. The purpose of this study was to examine and discover how Aloe vera can be used as an alternative therapy in the dental field. The PubMed, Google Scholar and Dentistry & Oral Sciences (DOSS) databases were utilized to find current scientific evidence on the effects of Aloe …

Oral Care And The Connection To Adverse Events In Dentistry, Melissa A. Rhoney
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
As the healthcare industry continues to change, dental providers are concerned about the different types of adverse events that can occur if systemic diseases are not well understood when treating patients. The purpose of this study was to explore the level of understanding among dental care providers of the relationship between oral care and systemic diseases and how these are linked to adverse events. The theoretical foundation that was used for this study was the Swiss cheese model. The research questions were designed to address the level of understanding among dental care providers of the link between oral care and …
Examining Practitioner Standards Regarding Periodontal Clearance For The Orthodontic Patient, William P. Brown
Examining Practitioner Standards Regarding Periodontal Clearance For The Orthodontic Patient, William P. Brown
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction: Orthodontic tooth movement relies largely on the physiology of the periodontium, which is comprised of various types of bone and soft tissues that surround and support the teeth. New orthodontic treatment modalities have emerged offering various combinations of improved esthetics and/or speed. However, the impact on standard and quality of care of these alternative treatment modalities is unclear. Institutional concern for the effects of orthodontics on a periodontally-compromised patient remains high, as evidenced by governing dental bodies mandating, and contemporary orthodontic leaders insisting, orthodontic treatment should not be carried out until active dental disease has been addressed. Therefore, this …

The Periodontal Specialty: A Survey Regarding Our Future, John H. White
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: To determine the characteristics influencing periodontal practices in Virginia and report on the anticipated changes in practice.
Methods: A REDCap survey was emailed to Virginia based American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) members assessing personal and practice demographics, trends in dental treatment and practice models, and how periodontists will adjust to account for these trends.
Results: The response rate was 31% (n=46). Respondents report greater referrals from more experienced general practitioners (GPs). Student debt was associated with age. Respondents ranked biologic advances, treatment of peri-implantitis, digital dentistry, development of corporate and group practice models, and GPs incorporating more periodontal …
