Background: Most studies have found pragmatic language skills to be poorer in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) populations, but there is no conclusive evidence.
Aim: Our aim was to conduct a meta-analysis of pragmatic language abilities in ADHD populations to more definitively demonstrate the extent of pragmatic language deficits in these populations as compared to typically developing (TD) populations.
Methods and procedures: Journal articles were identified using the search terms ((attention deficit) OR (adhd)) AND (pragmatics). Individuals using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) are supported by many AAC stakeholders and communication partners. Clinical decision making and AAC assessment models consider the capabilities and access needs of the individual using AAC, as well as opportunity barriers and supports imposed by communication partners and environments. The purpose of this research was to investigate opportunity barriers and supports identified by two critical AAC stakeholders: speechlanguage pathologists and caregivers. The first study investigated characteristics of AAC service provision reported by post-professional speech-language pathologists. Purpose
This study evaluated the amount of phonatory activity of Persons with Parkinson disease (PwPD) compared to adults without Parkinson’s disease measured over 3 days. The relationship between the amount of phonatory activity and Voice Handicap Index (VHI) total score was assessed as were differences in voicing activity across 3 days of data collection.
Methods
Fifteen PwPD receiving dopaminergic medication and fifteen age and sex matched adults without Parkinson’s disease completed the VHI and then wore a VocaLog vocal monitor (VM) for 3 consecutive days. From the VM data, the number of 1-second windows with dB sound pressure level > 0 …

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the effects of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the service delivery of speech and language therapy services in schools, early intervention, and outpatient settings. This analysis examined various service delivery settings in the realm of speech-language therapy that were affected by COVID-19. Per guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), worldwide governing legislatures, and American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), many measures were put into place throughout the spread of COVID-19. A receptive-expressive language gap occurs when a standardized receptive score is statistically greater than an expressive score in either a primary or a second language. In bilingual children, gap studies already exist for determining language impairment. In adults, there are few studies; nevertheless, one needs to distinguish between typical language patterns of bilingualism due to non-pathological loss of L1 skills versus problems resulting from accidents, disease, or age. This study examined the effects of Flow Phonation Voice Exercises on vocal measures in undergraduate student singers. Whereas these exercises have provided positive outcomes in individuals with vocal hyperfunction, the use of these exercises in potentially enhancing the singing voice has not been explored. A total of 10 participants were randomly assigned into an experimental group (n = 6), that received 5 sessions of the Flow Phonation Voice Exercises across 5 weeks, and a control group (n = 4) which did not receive the treatment. African American English (AAE)-speaking children’s ability to judge the grammaticality of sentences was evaluated by their clinical status and grammatical structure. The study originated from a need to understand more about the tense and agreement systems of AAE speakers with specific language impairment (SLI) relative to their typically developing (TD) AAE-speaking peers. Tense and agreement forms are typically excluded from the assessment and treatment of children who speak AAE in fear of misinterpreting a dialect difference as a language disorder. As a result, limited information exists about the tense and agreement systems of AAE-speaking children.

Factors Associated With The Psychosocial Wellbeing Among Parents Of Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard-Of-Hearing, Karen F. Munoz, John J. Whicker, Clarissa W. Ong, Michael P. Twohig

Purpose: To identify factors associated with low psychosocial wellbeing among parents of children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.
Method: A cross sectional survey that included instruments to measure psychological distress, functional impairment, and psychological inflexibility. Two hundred and ninety-six parents completed the survey.
Results: Analyses revealed that lower income, presence of additional disabilities, younger child age, and psychological inflexibility were factors associated with low parent psychosocial wellbeing.
Conclusions: Parents of younger children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing with low income, have children with additional disabilities, and higher psychological inflexibility may experience lower psychosocial wellbeing. Clinicians serving families may need to …

Purpose: A quantitative readability assessment of currently accessible online materials for parents of children who are D/deaf and hard of hearing.
Design: Consistent with current recommendations discussing “grade-level” of materials, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL) analysis, along with five other related measures, was conducted for each website. These analyses provide a readability score for each of the websites analyzed.
Study sample: The first five pages of results from a Google search of “early intervention deaf” and “early intervention hear” were compiled for readability assessment.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare Theory of Mind (ToM) acquisition in typically-hearing preschool-age children (TH), and deaf children of hearing parents (DCHP) who received a cochlear implant by 18 months of age, to determine if early access to spoken language via a cochlear implant affected ToM acquisition.
Methods: Participants included 25 children with cochlear implants ages 3.0 to 6.5 years and 25 age-matched children with TH all of whom were enrolled in preschools with typical peer models. The test battery included measures of expressive and receptive language and ToM.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to summarize the extant literature on the effectiveness of speech and spoken language interventions for young children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) in order to determine which types of speech-language interventions might be most effective, for which hearing levels and types of hearing losses, and at which dosage.
Methods: Using a scoping review methodology, a database search identified 10,360 studies of which 16 met the requirements for inclusion. Data was extracted from each for analysis.

When a child is diagnosed with hearing loss, the parents are faced with many decisions that will impact their child’s future. This study aimed to obtain data to determine viewpoints on information being provided to parents of children with hearing loss from both audiologist and parent perspectives. Topics of information surveyed included information on modes of communication, Deaf culture, cochlear implants, emotional support, and state resources/laws. A survey was created and shared in Facebook groups for audiologists and parents of Deaf/hard of hearing children. The survey was completed by 91 audiologists and 111 parents. Although cCMV is the leading non-genetic cause of childhood hearing loss in the United States, neither targeted nor universal screening protocols have been well established to identify cCMV in newborns. Moreover, until cCMV testing is universal, clinical protocols need to account for the complexities of individualized care in partnership with interprofessional care teams. This study explores the impact of the type and dosage of listening and spoken language (LSL) services on speech and language outcomes in children with cochlear implants or hearing aids in two LSL programs. Identical demographic variables were collected across the two programs for use in the statistical analyses. Speech and language outcomes were examined at ages 3 and 5 using standardized test measures. At age 3, significant differences in LSL outcomes existed between programs for children using cochlear implants but not for children using binaural hearing aids. Introduction: Tinnitus is characterized by a sporadic or constant ringing, chirping, buzzing, or related characteristics that are perceived auditorily and can range in intensity. Case Presentation: A young adult female with normal hearing sensitivity presented to the clinic with constant unilateral pulsatile tinnitus in the right ear that was intensified with physical activity and caffeine. It was reported as sudden in onset and classified as severely debilitating. After extensive audiologic testing, personalized counseling, and a thorough medical evaluation, the patient received an open-fit monaural hearing aid to promote safe sound therapy and tinnitus habituation. Introduction: Misophonia is a rare disorder affecting approximately one in 1,500 people, of which, a small percentage are pediatric patients. Misophonia is characterized by the dislike of an explicit sound in a specific context. Treatment for misophonia includes a four-step program that can be modified for pediatrics. Case Presentation: A young female presented to the clinic with a significant distressed reaction when in the presence of specific sounds that included chewing, clicking pens, and loud music bass tones. The study investigated the effectiveness of a multicultural project implemented for the purpose of infusing multicultural instruction into a graduate level infant language disorders class in a speech-language pathology graduate program. The participants were 24 graduate students who ranged in age from 23-32, 20 were white, 4 were Black. A pretest and posttest survey were implemented along with journal entry thematic analysis to evaluate qualitative changes in learning. The results of the survey indicate that this experiential learning project can promote increased understanding, awareness and confidence in students related to multicultural issues. The purpose of this study was to add participant racial/ethnic diversity to the growing body of literature on the implementation of mindfulness programs in speech-language pathology curriculum. A sample of 31 graduate speech-language pathology students enrolled at a Hispanic-serving institution, whereby 87% identified as Hispanic/Latinx, participated in eight weekly mindfulness sessions. At the end of the final session, students completed a six-question survey. Two questions that generated student feedback on the program's structure were analyzed for the purposes of this pilot study using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis procedures. Speech-language pathology graduate programs do not reflect equity across racial and ethnic groups. Training programs must adopt an anti-racist stance and intentionally and strategically plan for equity and inclusion of students and professionals who are Black, Indigenous and Persons of Color (BIPOC). Retention of minoritized students must be supported by inclusion efforts. The authors review systems of support essential to the recruitment and retention of BIPOC students in graduate programs. The American Speech Language Hearing Association requires that multicultural content be included in graduate communication and sciences disorders programs. However, there is a paucity of research on the ways that this is achieved. The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail a multicultural course created from best practices gathered from research literature, conference presentations, and syllabi sources in communication sciences and disorders and share student reflections of the created course. Student feedback from this study shows that foundational courses can improve cultural competency but careful consideration of discussion format and time dedicated to communities should take place.

Adequate service provision for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) clients has been an issue the field of speech-language pathology (SLP) has been grappling with. At the root of this issue is a lack of professional CLD training in SLP programs and a lack of diversity among the students enrolled in these programs. The current study described the MS-SLP bilingual emphasis curriculum and recruitment practices at Florida International University (FIU). Outcomes for the MS-SLP graduates were also explored. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are among the most important clinicians involved in providing assessment and therapy services for autistic children. Yet, a study found that 60% of graduate students in speech-language pathology only had one week of coursework that focused on autism. Our project aims to address this gap, by working with SLPs working in the community to create a best-practice-guidelines web-based tool SLPs can use to supplement their learning and inform their decision-making when assessing and providing support for autistic individuals.
