Activation Of Long Descending Propriospinal Neurons In Cat Spinal Cord, Robert J. Adams, Robert D. Skinner, Ronald S. Remmel
Activation Of Long Descending Propriospinal Neurons In Cat Spinal Cord, Robert J. Adams, Robert D. Skinner, Ronald S. Remmel
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Isolated mammalian spinal cord has been shown capable of generating locomotor activity. Propriospinal systems assumed to coordinate fore- and hindlimb activity are poorly understood. This study characterizes the long descending propriospinal (LDP) neurons in terms of the location of the somas and their peripheral inputs by direct neuronal recording. Anatomical studies using axonal retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase from the lumbar to the cervical spinal cord as a tracer first described these neurons. Two hundred and thirty-one LDP neurons were identified in electrophysiological experiments. Of these, 123 responded to natural stimulation, and about 50% of the others were activated only …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
An anatomical study of the alimentary canal and associated salivary apparatus was conducted for the pentatomid, Brochymena quadripustulata. The esophagus, ventriculus, pylorus, rectum, principal salivary glands and ducts are described and illustrated. Described structures of Brochymena quadripustulata are compared with various species of pentatomids and other hemipterans.
Connections Of The Mesencephalic Locomotor Region (Mlr) In The Cat, E. Garcia-Rill, Robert D. Skinner, S. A. Gilmore
Connections Of The Mesencephalic Locomotor Region (Mlr) In The Cat, E. Garcia-Rill, Robert D. Skinner, S. A. Gilmore
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The cat entopeduncular nucleus (EN), which is the main output of the basal ganglia, is known to project to the mesencephalic tegmentum. We have been able to elicit antidromic responses in single EN neurons from the region of the mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR), then transect (precollicular-postmamillary) the brainstem and elicit rhythmic movements of the limbs by stimulation of the same site in the same animal. Injections of the fluorescent dye 2,4 diamidino phenylindole 2 HCL (DAPI) into this area induces retrograde labeling of cell bodies in EN and motor cortex. Injections of a tritiated amino acid (leucine) into the motor …
Time And Life: Applications Of Modern Chronobiology, Lawrence E. Scheving, John E. Pauly
Time And Life: Applications Of Modern Chronobiology, Lawrence E. Scheving, John E. Pauly
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Chronobiology is that branch of science which objectively quantifies and explores mechanisms of biological time structure. It is an integrating discipline that impacts on all forms of life. When physiological functions are plotted along a time scale, they appear as regularly repetitive wave forms with means, amplitudes, phasing and periods. In nature these rhythms are found to have many frequencies, from a fraction of a second (ultradian) to a year or more (infradian or circannual); and those with periods of about one day (circadian) have been explored extensively. Examples of several circadian rhythms are given for experimental animals and man. …
How We Look: Studies Of Oculomotor-System Neural Connections, Ronald S. Remmel, Robert D. Skinner
How We Look: Studies Of Oculomotor-System Neural Connections, Ronald S. Remmel, Robert D. Skinner
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The neural connections of the reticular formation (RF) with the vestibular nuclei (8V) and the ascending medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) were studied, because many neurons in these structures carry eye-movement and head-movement (vestibular) signals and are only one or two synaptic connections removed from eye motorneurons. We used stimulating electrodes placed in specific brainstem structures and a single-neuron recording microelectrode in anesthetized or decerebrate cats. Connections were determined when the neurons were excited either forwards (orthodromically) or backwards (antidromically) by a shock. Four classes of neurons were studied. One neuronal class in the pontine RF projects axons into the ascending …

Time-Related Changes In Rat Androgen Binding Protein Following A Sterilizing Dose Of 3-Chloro-1, 2-Propanediol, Shirley J. Stein
Masters Theses
Androgen binding protein (ABP) is produced by the Sertoli cell, regulated by FSH and androgens, secreted into the testicular fluid, and transported into the caput epididymis where it is thought to play a role in sperm maturation. In this study, the response of ABP to a lesion created chemically by administration of a single, oral 60 mg/kg dose of alpha-chlorohydrin was examined in ninety day old male rats. Total testicular ABP content increased progressively for four days after treatment and there after declined whereas, epididymal ABP concentration decreased immediately. Serum testosterone showed no significant variation from controls, however, serum FSH …

Effects Of Two Speeds Of Isokinetic Training On Strength, Power & Muscular Endurance, Kunle Adeyanju
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of two speeds of isokinetic training on muscular strength, power and endurance on college females.
The study involved thirty college females. Twenty of the subjects who served in the experimental groups were randomly assigned to one of two groups: fast speed or slow speed group. This was done after matching based on the pretest strength measure. Ten subjects who served as the control group were from a bowling class This investigation was conducted for seven weeks with a training frequency of three days per week. The experimental treatment was isokinetic …
Androgen-Induced Immunosuppression, Debra Ann Weyant
Androgen-Induced Immunosuppression, Debra Ann Weyant
Dissertations and Theses
It is well established that females are more immunocompetent than males as evidenced by higher humoral antibody titers, lowered susceptibility to infection, and more efficient graft rejection.
Furthermore, females also exhibit a much higher incidence of autoimmune disease. These observations have led investigators to believe that the male hormonal environment may play a key role in the regulation of immune response. For this reason, this study is concerned with the expression of autoimmunity and of immune function in the mouse.
This study included the New Zealand Black (NZB) mouse strain, as an animal model for human SLE, as well as …

Relationship Of Age And Hypertension To Neuropsychological Test Performance, Clyde A. Pentz Iii, Merrill F. Elias, W Gibson Wood, Norman A. Schultz, John Dineen
Maine-Syracuse Longitudinal Papers
Young adult (X- = 29) and middle aged (X- =50) hypertensive and normotensive subjects were compared with respect to seven neuropsychological test scores derived from tests on the Halstead-Reitan battery. Age main effects, with inferior performance for the middle aged subjects, were observed for the localization and time portions of the Tactile Performance Test (TPT) and for the Trail Making A test. The multivariate age effect was significant for the composite of seven scores. A multivariate blood pressure main effect was obtained and main effect blood pressure was significant for the category test; hypertensives made more errors than normotensives. A …
The Recombinant Dna Debate, Richard E. Brown
The Recombinant Dna Debate, Richard E. Brown
Honors Theses
The questions surrounding the recombinant DNA research debate are not just questions of technique and safety. They involve the driving forces of scientific research, especially those premises and presuppositions concerning the expansion of knowledge versus our ability to use that knowledge wisely. Basically, we ask if policy--scientific, industrial, or political--should be an integral part of our future steps in recombinant DNA research and development.
It is obvious from past mistakes involving pollution, waste of fossil fuels, and over-mechanization that we must try to avoid the crucial tendency that technology has of overrunning common sense and moral guidelines. This is especially …

Influence Of Denervation And Hemithyroidectomy On The Age Related Increase In The Number Of Calcitonin-Containing Cells In Mouse Thyroid, Nualnoi Wechbanjong
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
It has been concluded from this study that nerve fibers in the superior laryngeal nerves have an influence on the development of C-cells in the mouse thyroid. This conclusion is based on the results of two types of investigation. The first is an analysis of the effect of age on the number of C-cells and the second is an investigation of the influence of denervation and hemithyroid-parathyroidectomy on the age related changes in C-cells numbers.
