Background/Aim: Pre-emptive targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) at the time of amputation results in less phantom limb pain (PLP) compared with untreated amputee controls. There is limited literature describing the technique in patients undergoing hindquarter amputation despite up to 90% of these patients reporting PLP and 50% presenting with painful neuroma. The purpose of the current study was to describe the motor nerves accessible through a primary hind-quarter amputation to be used for TMR and review pain outcomes in clinical case correlates of patients with TMR. Colloid cysts are benign growths commonly found in the third ventricle or at the Foramen of Monroe. They are composed of epithelial lining filled with gelatinous material that contain cholesterol, mucin, old blood and ions. Most colloid cysts are asymptomatic but can present with a variety of symptoms that range from headaches, diplopia, memory problems, and vertigo. They can also present as an obstructive hydrocephalus with the classic “Wet, wacky and wobbly” triad. Rarely colloid cysts have been reported to cause sudden death. They can present to the ED with any spectrum of these symptoms.

Rationale: The implantation effect describes an immediate reduction in seizure frequency following the insertion of intracranial electrodes. There is limited information regarding which patients will experience a reduction of seizures and the reason for the implantation effect. This study focuses on describing predictor factors for the reduction in seizure frequency in patients with medically resistant epilepsy implanted with depth electrodes.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 89 patients who underwent intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) monitoring with depth electrodes. Sixty-five of these patients had no subsequent therapeutic interventions and had a 3-6 month follow-up. Patients were grouped as either responders …

Underlying the physical and cognitive deficits consequent of many neuropathologies is one common factor, the loss of neurons. While neurodegenerative diseases, stroke, and traumatic brain injury arise from a variety of etiologies, they all ultimately result in injury and/or death of neuronal cells and concomitant functional deficits. An 18 year old G1P1 female, 3 months postpartum presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain that was diagnosed as cholelithiasis and choledocholithiasis. Following a cholecystectomy surgery, the patient developed weakness and gait abnormality that was diagnosed as neuralgia.
Meralgia paresthetica is such an understudied diagnosis that its incidence is unknown. Patients who are 30-85 years old, obese, diabetic, and/or pregnant are at an increased risk for the condition. This case calls attention to the underdiagnosis of meralgia paresthetica in pediatric patients with comorbidities. Background: Elective total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common surgery which has evolved rapidly. However, there are no recent large systematic reviews of serious adverse event (SAE) rate and 30-day readmission rate (30-dRR) or an indication of whether surgical methods have improved. Methods: To obtain a pooled estimate of SAE rate and 30-dRR following TKA, we searched Medline, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases. Data were extracted by two authors following PRISMA guidelines. Eligibility criteria were defined prior to a comprehensive search. Stereotactic neurosurgery is a subspecialty within neurosurgery concerned with accurate targeting of brain structures. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a specific type of stereotaxy in which electrodes are implanted in deep brain structures. It has proven therapeutic efficacy in Parkinson’s disease and Essential Tremor, but with an expanding number of indications under evaluation including Alzheimer’s disease, depression, epilepsy, and obesity, many more Canadians with chronic health conditions may benefit. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a disorder of the nervous system that causes problems with movement (motor symptoms) as well as other problems such as mood disorders, cognitive changes, sleep disorders, constipation, pain, and other non-motor symptoms. The severity of PD symptoms worsens over time as the disease progresses, and while there are treatments for the motor and some non-motor symptoms there is no known cure for PD. Thus there is a high demand for therapies to slow the progressive neurodegeneration observed in PD. OBJECTIVE: Neurosurgery is potentially curative in chronic epilepsy but can only be offered to patients if the surgical risk to language is known. Clinical functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is an ideal, noninvasive method for localizing language cortex yet remains to be validated for this purpose. We have recently presented a novel method for localizing language cortex. Here we present a preliminary evaluation of this method’s validity. We hypothesized language regions identified using this novel method would demonstrate stronger functional connectivity than randomly generated set of proximal networks. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this selective EBM review is to determine whether or not a mobile-bearing vs. fixed-bearing total knee replacement affects post-operative knee pain at one year.
STUDY DESIGN: Review of three English language primary studies, published between 2008 and 2012.
DATA SOURCES: Three randomized controlled trials published after 2008 comparing post-operative knee pain in mobile vs. fixed-bearing total knee replacements using PubMed and Cochrane databases.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this systematic review is to determine whether or not local infiltration analgesia (LIA) is a safe and effective method for post-operative pain management after a unilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
STUDY DESIGN: Review of three English language primary studies published in 2010 and 2011.
DATA SOURCES: Three randomized controlled trials comparing local infiltration analgesia to three separate controls: epidural analgesia, placebo infiltration and femoral nerve block found using PubMed.
