Left Frontal Hub Connectivity Delays Cognitive Impairment In Autosomal-Dominant And Sporadic Alzheimer's Disease, Nicolai Franzmeier, Anne M Fagan, Katrina Paumier, Tammie Benzinger, John C Morris, Randall J Bateman, Et Al.

2010-2019 OA Pubs

Patients with Alzheimer's disease vary in their ability to sustain cognitive abilities in the presence of brain pathology. A major open question is which brain mechanisms may support higher reserve capacity, i.e. relatively high cognitive performance at a given level of Alzheimer's pathology. Higher functional MRI-assessed functional connectivity of a hub in the left frontal cortex is a core candidate brain mechanism underlying reserve as it is associated with education (i.e. a protective factor often associated with higher reserve) and attenuated cognitive impairment in prodromal Alzheimer's disease. However, no study has yet assessed whether such hub connectivity of the left …

Thinking And Acting "Outside The Box", Erin E. Schwier, Jennie Digrado, Christine Mary Childers

San Marcos, Summer 2018

Role play and simulation are both powerful teaching tools that have been used in nursing and physician education for many years. Role playing offers a cheaper alternative than simulation and allows the individuals playing the roles to experience the patient’s perspective. The University of St. Augustine in California is one of the few PT programs to teach PT students the Allen Cognitive levels, and the importance of cognition when planning and developing interventions. With the aging of the baby boomers, more therapists will be working with the aging population, and it is critical that the concept of cognitive challenges is …

Delayed Unpaired Extinction As A Treatment For Hyperarousal Of The Rabbit Nictitating Membrane Response And Its Implications For Treating Ptsd, Bernard G. Schreurs, Carrie A. Smith-Bell, Lauren B. Burhans

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Treatment for PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder) is rarely available immediately after trauma and often delayed for weeks or months after an event. In a rabbit eyeblink conditioning model of PTSD, we have previously shown that presentations of a tone conditioned stimulus (CS) and shock unconditioned stimulus (US) in an explicitly unpaired manner known as unpaired extinction is effective in reducing CS responding and US hyperarousal even if shock intensity is reduced eight-fold and elicits only minimal responding. Here we determined if delayed delivery of unpaired extinction would still be effective in extinguishing hyperarousal. Rabbits were tested for sensitivity to shock …

Johnson, Nancy L. Saccone, Sharon M. Lutz, Timothy B. Baker, Daniel W. Mcneil, Mary L. Marazita, John E. Hokanson, Laura J. Bierut, Dana B. Hancock

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Background—The Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND), a derivation of the Fagerström Tolerance Questionnaire, was first published in 1991. The FTND remains one of the most widely used measures of nicotine dependence for studying genetic and epidemiological risk factors and the likelihood of smoking cessation. However, it is unclear whether secular trends in patterns of smoking alter the psychometric properties of the FTND and its interpretation. Methods—We examined measurement invariance in the lifetime and current FTND scores across birth cohorts using participants drawn from six study samples (N=13,775). Results—We found significant (p

Cerebrovascular Dysfunction With Stress And Depression, Emily Burrage, Kent L. Marshall, Nalini Santanam, Paul D. Chantler Apr 2018

Cerebrovascular Dysfunction With Stress And Depression, Emily Burrage, Kent L. Marshall, Nalini Santanam, Paul D. Chantler

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Maintenance of adequate tissue perfusion through a dense network of cerebral microvessels is critical for the perseveration of normal brain function. Regulation of the cerebral blood flow has to ensure adequate delivery of nutrients and oxygen with moment-to-moment adjustments to avoid both hypo- and hyper-perfusion of the brain tissue. Even mild impairments of cerebral blood flow regulation can have significant implications on brain function. Evidence suggests that chronic stress and depression elicits multifaceted functional impairments to the cerebral microcirculation, which plays a critical role in brain health and the pathogenesis of stress-related cognitive impairment and cerebrovascular events. Identifying the functional …

We report a case of a 57-year-old male with clinically diagnosed and autopsy-confirmed early onset Alzheimer’s disease who completed suicide by gunshot wound to the chest. This case has several unique aspects that have not been discussed in previous case reports of completed suicide in Alzheimer’s disease. In particular, our patient’s death was highly planned with successful compensation for his cognitive deficits. After all firearms had been removed from the home as a safety precaution, he obtained a new weapon, hid it and left himself cues to find and use it. The case is discussed in the context of literature …

Pediatric Metabolic Outcome Comparisons Based On A Spectrum Of Obesity And Asthmatic Symptoms, Ashley D. Perdue, Lesley A. Cottrell, Christa L. Lilly, William A. Gower, Brian A. Ely, Brad Foringer, Melvin L. Wright, William A. Neal Apr 2018

Pediatric Metabolic Outcome Comparisons Based On A Spectrum Of Obesity And Asthmatic Symptoms, Ashley D. Perdue, Lesley A. Cottrell, Christa L. Lilly, William A. Gower, Brian A. Ely, Brad Foringer, Melvin L. Wright, William A. Neal

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Rationale: Asthma and obesity are 2 of the most prevalent public health issues for children in the U.S. Trajectories of both have roughly paralleled one another over the past several decades causing many to explore their connection to one another and to other associated health issues such as diabetes and dyslipidemia. Earlier models have commonly designated obesity as the central hub of these associations; however, more recent models have argued connections between pediatric asthma and other obesity-related metabolic conditions regardless of children's obesity risk. Objectives: To examine the relationships between asthma, obesity, and abnormal metabolic indices. Methods: We conducted a …
