Evidence suggests resilience promotes successful aging in place and protective factors promote resilience. This study sought to investigate whether or not the combination of three protective factors, physical health, social support, and self-efficacy are all of equal importance in predicting resilience among Marin County older adults, or if some individual protective factors have a greater impact on resilience than the others. Fifty-eight participants ages 62 and higher were recruited from senior community programs and personal contacts. Four self-report questionnaires were completed by the participants in this exploratory, cross-sectional, quantitative design. SPSS was used for a descriptive and multivariate analyses to …
Measuring Physiological Responses To Sensation In Typical Adults, Sarah Button, Kristen Christensen, Emily Minor
Measuring Physiological Responses To Sensation In Typical Adults, Sarah Button, Kristen Christensen, Emily Minor
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Objective: Sensory processing issues can have a large negative impact on the ability to participate in daily occupations such as ADLs, access to work, school and leisure environments, and social interactions (Dunn, 2001). The evidence documenting sensory processing issues in adults is sparse. Physiological information can be used as objective evidence to support the claim that those with over-responsivity to sensations are experiencing their environment differently than the typical population. Understanding more about sensory processing in adults may lead to increased recognition of the problem and more opportunities for intervention to increase occupational participation. The purpose of this quantitative study …

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder that causes the RBC to become sickle shaped due to a mutation in the β-globin gene encoding the protein hemoglobin. This disease causes reduced oxygen carrying capacity of RBC resulting in painful crisis, hemolytic anemia, and infection susceptibility. SCD affects around 100,000 individuals in USA alone and 14 million people globally. SCD affected individuals have high mortality rates. Early detection and constant monitoring of this disease is essential. The following review focuses on various methodologies that have emerged in the diagnosis of SCD. Also, low cost methods that can be easily …
Implementation Plan To Integrate The Nanosphere Verigene Assay In A High-Volume Reference Laboratory And The Anticipated Workflow Benefits To Adopting Rapid Blood Culture Testing, Sofia Nazar
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Laboratory processing pathways have a significant impact on the overall management of patients with sepsis. Retrieval and isolation of the suspected pathogen from a patient blood culture specimen is required for a definitive diagnosis of bacterial septicemia. Reference laboratories are high-volume facilities most often located some distance away from the collecting facility. Given the lengthy work up already required for blood culture pathogen analysis, reference laboratories must identify ways to optimize every step of the blood culture pathway in the effort to decrease turnaround time and mitigate lag time to final pathogen identification incurred by prolonged collection-to-incubation times. Rapid molecular …

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia that affects 30 million children and adults in the United States alone. Patients suffering from diabetes have high concentrations of reactive α-dicarbonyls (α-DCs) like, methylglyoxal (MGO). The abundance of α-DCs form advanced glycation end products (AGEs); in turn, the accumulation of AGEs has been linked to secondary complications. Secondary complications include diabetic neuropathy, nephropathy and cardiomyopathy. A recently discovered TRPA-1-Nrf-2 pathway is a conserved mechanism in vertebrates and invertebrates that detoxifies α-DCs; however, regulators that activate the detoxification mechanism are currently unknown. Several supplement grade compounds were screened for TRPA-1-Nrf2 induced …

Identification Of Substrate-Selective Histone Deacetylases And Their Inhibitors That Mediate Her2 Transcript Stability, Mariah Alejo
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Breast cancer is the most common malignancy diagnosed in women. 15-20% of these cancers overexpress the HER2 (ERRB2) oncoprotein. HER2-positive breast cancers are generally aggressive and are associated with poor prognosis. Unfortunately, only a mere 30% of HER2-positve patients respond to therapies when they are used as a single agent. Combining therapeutics can potentially lead to synergy and improved anticancer efficacy, and there is clearly a need for the development of new HER2-directed therapeutics. Newer approaches include the utilization of histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors. It has been observed that HDAC inhibitors can induce the rapid decay of oncogenic transcripts such …

Student Works
A growing number of people suffer chronic, treatment-resistant posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; Amoroso & Workman, 2016; Buoso, Doblin, Farré, Alcázar, & Gómez-Jarabo, 2008; Mithoefer, Wagner, Mithoefer, Jerome, & Doblin, 2011; Oehen, Traber, Widmer, & Schnyder, 2013). The most popular treatments, including exposure therapy, may not be effective for some people (Amoroso & Workman, 2016; Mithoefer et al., 2011). Treatment dropout and suicidality are high among people for whom therapy is minimally effective (Amoroso, 2015; Amoroso & Workman, 2016; Mithoefer et al., 2011; Oehen et al., 2013). Researchers have begun to investigate 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)-assisted psychotherapy as a possible treatment for PTSD …
A Leap To Hybrid Governance For European Union Healthcare On Organ Donations, Tasnim Ahmed
A Leap To Hybrid Governance For European Union Healthcare On Organ Donations, Tasnim Ahmed
Journal of Law and Health
This article evaluates two proposals that the Organs Directive along with the commission’s Action Plan 2009-2015 can be viewed as a form of hybrid governance. The Organs Directive is the first legally-binding supranational risk regulation devised in the field of organ donation and transplantation. The Directive is modelled on the earlier Directive dealing with blood, tissue, and cells. The Action Plan, which is soft law, will complement the Directive. The Directive and Action Plan requires additional administration procedures from the Member States with the EU Commission regularly monitoring the implementation of the work programme to ensure it is manageable for …

Identification Of Barriers To Sbarb At The Bedside In An Acute Care Setting, Elizabeth Bryand
Master's Theses, Dissertations, Graduate Research and Major Papers Overview
Nurse to nurse handoff that occurs at the end of each shift is a known area of potential safety risk due to poor communication and inadequate safety checks. The Joint Commission (TJC) reported that communication between healthcare providers or between patient and healthcare providers was the leading root cause of sentinel events. Research supports the benefits of a structure handoff at the bedside to patient safety and satisfaction. Despite these proven benefits, staff nurses have not consistently embraced the practice. The purpose of this study was to identify nurses’ perceived barriers to performing SBARP (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation and Patient) …

An Integrative Review Of Fluid Management In Cardiac Surgery, Beena George
Master's Theses, Dissertations, Graduate Research and Major Papers Overview
Adequate fluid administration during and after cardiac surgery is essential to ensure adequate oxygen delivery to the tissues, while simultaneously avoiding the dangers of hypervolemia and fluid overload. In both cardiac and non-cardiac surgery there has been debate on what the best approach to fluid management is, what hemodynamic parameters should be used to assess fluid requirements, and what type of fluids should be used. There are several studies in non-cardiac surgery that examine these issues, while they are fewer in the field of cardiac surgery. An integrative review design was used to examine the current evidence on fluid management …

Effects Of Mitochondrial Nadp+-Dependent Isocitrate Dehydrogenase Deficiency On Fructose-Induced Obesity In Mice, Allison Michelle Montalbano, Kaleigh Elizabeth Beane
Human Nutrition and Hospitality Management Undergraduate Honors Theses
Obesity prevalence in the United States continues to increase and is associated with health consequences such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and hyperlipidemia. Among many contributing factors to obesity, fructose may be one of the major reasons as it disrupts the antioxidant system thereby resulting in an accumulation of reactive oxidative species and leading to obese conditions. The enzyme, isocitrate dehydrogenase 2 (IDH2), reduces nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate from the TCA Cycle, hence might be implicated with not only energy metabolism but also cellular redox homeostasis. Therefore, the hypothesis was that IDH2 deficiency in mice would exacerbate hepatic lipid …
