Quarantine And Health Screening Protocols For Wildlife Prior To Translocation And Release Into The Wild, Michael H. Woodford Dec 2000

Quarantine And Health Screening Protocols For Wildlife Prior To Translocation And Release Into The Wild, Michael H. Woodford

Other Publications in Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease

In recent years the translocation and release into the wild of wild-caught and captive-bred wild animals (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish) has become a common practice, ostensibly for rehabilitation or conservation purposes. These wild animals comprise many varied taxa and the objectives of translocation and release may include:
(1) reintroducing a species that has become extinct in its natural range;
(2) restocking or reinforcing a population which has become depleted; and
(3) rehabilitating wild animals and birds which have been illegally captured and subsequently confiscated by Customs or national wildlife authorities. Welfare organizations also receive sick and injured wild …

Impaired Fast-Spiking, Suppressed Cortical Inhibition, And Increased Susceptibility To Seizures In Mice Lacking Kv3.2 K+ Channel Proteins, David Lau, Eleazar Vega-Saenz De Miera, Diego Contreras, Alan Chow, Richard Paylor, Christopher S. Leonard, Bernardo Rudy

NYMC Faculty Publications

Voltage-gated K(+) channels of the Kv3 subfamily have unusual electrophysiological properties, including activation at very depolarized voltages (positive to -10 mV) and very fast deactivation rates, suggesting special roles in neuronal excitability. In the brain, Kv3 channels are prominently expressed in select neuronal populations, which include fast-spiking (FS) GABAergic interneurons of the neocortex, hippocampus, and caudate, as well as other high-frequency firing neurons. Although evidence points to a key role in high-frequency firing, a definitive understanding of the function of these channels has been hampered by a lack of selective pharmacological tools. We therefore generated mouse lines in which one …

Microbial Biofilms: From Ecology To Molecular Genetics, Mary Ellen Davey, George A. O'Toole Dec 2000

Microbial Biofilms: From Ecology To Molecular Genetics, Mary Ellen Davey, George A. O'Toole

Dartmouth Scholarship

Biofilms are complex communities of microorganisms attached to surfaces or associated with interfaces. Despite the focus of modern microbiology research on pure culture, planktonic (free-swimming) bacteria, it is now widely recognized that most bacteria found in natural, clinical, and industrial settings persist in association with surfaces. Furthermore, these microbial communities are often composed of multiple species that interact with each other and their environment. The determination of biofilm architecture, particularly the spatial arrangement of microcolonies (clusters of cells) relative to one another, has profound implications for the function of these complex communities. Numerous new experimental approaches and methodologies have been …

Disinfection Of Dentin By Intracanal Laser Irradiation: An In Vitro Model, Silvia Cristina Mafra Cecchini Dec 2000

Disinfection Of Dentin By Intracanal Laser Irradiation: An In Vitro Model, Silvia Cristina Mafra Cecchini

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A possible cause for root canal failure is the persistence of bacteria that have colonized dentinal tubules. To reduce this risk and, if possible, to also shorten the time consuming endodontic therapy, new equipment and materials are constantly being introduced. The aim of the present investigation was to study the effect of disinfection of dentinal tubules by intracanal laser irradiation using an in vitro model. The groups irradiated by various lasers were compared with calcium hydroxide, a material frequently used as intracanal medication between appointments. Freshly extracted, intact bovine incisors were used. The root cementum was removed and the teeth …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Nucleotide sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of Brazilian bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) field isolates identified four viruses belonging to the genotype 2. Comparison of 5’ UTR sequences from these isolates to those of North American BVDV type 2 revealed genomic variations that correlated with the geographic origins of the isolates. Two of the Brazilian type 2 viruses were isolated from clinical cases of gastroenteric/respiratory disease and two were isolated from healthy bovine fetuses. The clinical cases affected young animals (8- and 18-months-old) and were characterized by diarrhea, respiratory signs, extensive oral and digestive tract erosions, conjunctival and vulvar congestion, occasional …

Medicare+Choice: Where To From Here?, Nora Super

National Health Policy Forum

This issue brief examines Medicare+Choice (M+C) plan participation, benefit coverage, and enrollment and the factors that have contributed to plans' decisions to participate in or withdraw from certain markets. In addition, the issue brief explores what has been happening to M+C enrollees in terms of costs, benefits, and continuity of care. Lastly, the issue brief examines the reasons that alternative plan options — such as preferred provider organizations (PPOs) and provider-sponsored organizations (PSOs) — have not taken hold. Legislative proposals that might affect the future of M+C are also discussed.

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

The case of a four-rooted maxillary second molar which has an unusual morphological varia- tion of the palatal root is presented. This molar has two palatal roots and two buccal roots. The shape of the floor of pulp chamber is quadrangular with one canal orifice located at each corner. Important aid in detecting extra roots is careful study of preoperative radiograph. Finding and having all of the root canals in endodontic case treated is essential to treatment success. On the two and a half years recall examination, the tooth was asymptomatic and functioning properly. Radiograph showed no evidence of periapical …

Verruciform Xanthoma(เวอรูซิฟอร์มแซนโทมา), Kittipong Dhanuthai

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Verruciform xanthoma is a rare, benign entity which preferentially affects the oral mucosa than any other tissue. The most frequent site of involvement is the gingiva. It affects mostly the middleaged person with a predilection for male gender. Clinically, verruciform xanthoma appears as papillary or verrucous, flat or slightly raised lesions. Aggregates of lipid-laden foam cells confined to the connective tissue papillae between epithelial rete ridges in association with papillary or verrucous epithelial hyperplasia are the histolopathologic hallmark of this lesion. These foam cells are actually of macrophage/monocyte lineage. The histopathological distinction of verruciform xanthoma from other lesions, which it …

Clinical Experience In Rehabilitation Of Ankylosing Spondylitis Associated With Spinal Cord Injury, Li-Chen Tung, Chih-Hsiang Ho, Liu-Ing Bih

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory disease of the axial skeleton. Spinal ankylosis reduces vertebral flexibility, exacerbates osteoporotic change, and leads to a loss of the biomechanical function of the spine. Thus, even small impacts might cause vertebral fracture or damage of the spinal cord in the patients with ankylosing spondylitis. This retrospective study included 11 patients with ankylosing spondylitis who were admitted to a hos-pital between 1991 and 1999 for rehabilitative service after spinal cord injury. Of these patients, 10 were male, and one female. Average age was 46.3 ± 14.3 years. Falls accounted for injuries in six patients, traffic accidents …

Eye Position Signal Modulates A Human Parietal Pointing Region During Memory-Guided Movements., J F Desouza, S P Dukelow, J S Gati, R S Menon, R A Andersen, T Vilis

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined the signal in parietal regions that were selectively activated during delayed pointing to flashed visual targets and determined whether this signal was dependent on the fixation position of the eyes. Delayed pointing activated a bilateral parietal area in the intraparietal sulcus (rIPS), rostral/anterior to areas activated by saccades. During right-hand pointing to centrally located targets, the left rIPS region showed a significant increase in activation when the eye position was rightward compared with leftward. As expected, activation in motor cortex showed no modulation when only eye position changed. During pointing to retinotopically identical …
