Conclusions:
Use of liver grafts from older donors presents similar survival outcomes as grafts from younger donor age. Therefore, it offers a viable option to expand the donor pool and increase number of OLTs.
However, there is higher incidence of retransplantation due to primary graft non-function, and longer hospital length of stay observed in the older donor age group.
Further studies using larger patient populations are needed to validate our results.

Transgenic RNAi, an alternative to the gene knockout approach, can induce hypomorphic phenotypes that resemble those of the gene knockout in mice. Conditional transgenic RNAi is an attractive choice of method for reverse genetics in vivo because it can achieve temporal and spatial silencing of targeted genes. Pol III promoters such as U6 are widely used to drive the expression of RNAi transgenes in animals. Tested in transgenic mice, a Cre-loxP inducible U6 promoter drove the broad expression of an shRNA against the Pink1 gene whose loss-of-functional mutations cause one form of familial Parkinson's disease. The expression of the shRNA …

High-Resolution Physical Map For Chromosome 16q12.1-Q13, The Blau Syndrome Locus., Xiaoju Wang, Helena Kuivaniemi, Gina Bonavita, Charlene J Williams, Gerard Tromp

BACKGROUND: The Blau syndrome (MIM 186580), an autosomal dominant granulomatous disease, was previously mapped to chromosome 16p12-q21. However, inconsistent physical maps of the region and consequently an unknown order of microsatellite markers, hampered us from further refining the genetic locus for the Blau syndrome. To address this problem, we constructed our own high-resolution physical map for the Blau susceptibility region. RESULTS: We generated a high-resolution physical map that provides more than 90% coverage of a refined Blau susceptibility region. The map consists of four contigs of sequence tagged site-based bacterial artificial chromosomes with a total of 124 bacterial artificial chromosomes, …

Developing Ambulatory Care Registered Nurse Competencies For Care Coordination And Transition Management, Sheila Haas, Beth Ann Swan, Traci Haynes
Sheila A. Haas, PhD, NP, FAAN
The need for care coordination and management of transitions between Patient-Centered Medical Home providers, outpatient and community settings, including the Accountable Care Organization is often overlooked, episodic, and accountability for coordinating care and managing transitions between providers and services is lacking.

Health Care Reform: Current Updates And Future Initiatives For Ambulatory Care Nursing, Beth Ann Swan, Phd, Crnp, Faan, Sheila Haas, Phd, Np, Faan
Sheila A. Haas, PhD, NP, FAAN
Executive Summary: While the signing of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was a historical event marking the beginning of health care reform in the United States, it signaled the start of a golden age for ambulatory care nursing. Ambulatory care RNs are well-positioned to fully participate in health care reform initiatives. RNs are well-positioned to lead, facilitate, and/or participate in all patient care medical homes' and accountable care organizations'quality and safety initiatives through enhanced use of major ambulatory care RN role dimensions such as advocacy, telehealth, patient education, care coordination and transitional care, and community outreach. RNs are …

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: There is scant data regarding disease presentation and treatment response among black men living in Africa. In this study we evaluate disease presentation and early clinical outcomes among Ghanaian men with prostate cancer treated with external beam radiotherapy (EBRT). METHODS: A total of 379 men with prostate cancer were referred to the National Center for Radiotherapy, Ghana from 2003 to 2009. Data were collected regarding patient-and tumor-related factors such as age, prostate specific antigen (PSA), Gleason score (GS), clinical stage (T), and use of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). For patients who received EBRT, freedom from biochemical failure (FFbF) …

PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of timing of salvage and adjuvant radiation therapy on outcomes after prostatectomy for prostate cancer.
METHODS: Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare linked database, we identified prostate cancer patients diagnosed during 1995-2007 who had one or more adverse pathological features after prostatectomy. The final cohort of 6,137 eligible patients included men who received prostatectomy alone (n = 4,509) or with adjuvant (n = 894) or salvage (n = 734) radiation therapy. Primary outcomes were genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and erectile dysfunction events and survival after treatment(s).
RESULTS: Radiation therapy after prostatectomy was associated with higher rates …

Twenty four new College within the College posters have been added to the Jefferson Digital Commons. College within the College (CwiC) is a four year academic area of concentration designed to enrich the Jefferson Medical College curriculum for those students who seek additional training in Population Health. This program aims to step beyond the individual-level focus of mainstream medicine by addressing a broad range of factors that impact health, such as environment, literacy, ethnicity, social structure, resource distribution, health systems and health education/promotion. This collection consists of posters and presentations developed by Jefferson CwiC-PH medical students in their exploration of …

Aberrant activation of Hedgehog (Hh) signaling is causative of BCCs and has been associated with a fraction of SCCs. Desmoglein 2 (Dsg2) is an adhesion protein that is upregulated in many cancers and overexpression of Dsg2 in the epidermis renders mice more susceptible to squamous-derived neoplasia. Here we examined a potential crosstalk between Dsg2 and Hh signaling in skin tumorigenesis. Our findings show that Dsg2 modulates Gli1 expression, in vitro and in vivo. Ectopic expression of Dsg2 on Ptc1+/lacZ background enhanced epidermal proliferation and interfollicular activation of the Hh pathway. Furthermore, in response to DMBA/TPA, the Dsg2/Ptc1+/lacZ mice developed squamous …

Objectives: Glycemic variability increases oxidative stress and may trigger the inflammation and coagulation cascades. Variability may be associated with increase morbidity and mortality in ICU patients. We analyzed glycemic variability after major surgery in diabetic (DM) and non-diabetic (NDM) patients using an automated intravenous blood glucose monitor (IVBG).
