This notebook was written by student Uriah Derickson at Pennsylvania Hospital. The notebook includes notes from a lecture on Midwifery by Dr. William Shippen, Jr. that were taken on April 7, 1798. Shippen was a professor of Anatomy and Surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital from 1774-1806. He pioneered courses in midwifery despite opposition, and warned against the use of instruments in childbirth (Penn University Archives & Records Center).
