PURPOSE: The increasing prevalence of obesity urgently requires effective management strategies. This study evaluates the effectiveness of Jefferson Weight Loss Program (JeffWLP), a trained medical student-delivered health education program in a predominantly African-American patient cohort.

METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was performed enrolling 30 patients with an average socioeconomic status of 5.8 (10 maximum). The intervention group (n=18) completed JeffWLP, a low-cost, 12-week health coaching program combining education sessions with graded step exercises. The control group (n=12) received usual care. Mean baseline age, BMI, and General Nutritional Knowledge Questionnaire (GNKQ) scores were: 46±13 years, 38±5, and 14.7±1.9 (maximum score=17) respectively. …

Women with perinatal depression are at a high risk for unhealthy dietary behaviors but whether the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has exacerbated this risk is unknown. Here we report the findings of a qualitative study exploring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nutrition-related experiences of women with perinatal depression. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 women with a history of perinatal depression and 10 healthcare providers. A semistructured format elicited how food and nutrition-related behaviors of women with perinatal depression were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Thematic analysis identified 4 themes related to …

In the U.S., preterm birth disproportionately impacts certain racial/ethnic groups, with Black women experiencing preterm birth at a rate 50% higher than other groups. Among the numerous factors that likely contribute to these increased rates are neighborhood characteristics, such as food environment. In this mixed-methods case study, we evaluated how pregnant women living in a predominately minority, lower income community with high preterm birth rates navigate and perceive their food environment. Qualitative interviews were performed to assess perceptions of food environment (n = 7) along with geographic and observational assessments of their food environment. Participants traveled an average of 2.10 …

Assessing Food Quality And Regulations At Homeless Shelters In Philadelphia, Emily Casaletto, Rickie Brawer, Phd, Mph, Mches Feb 2021

Assessing Food Quality And Regulations At Homeless Shelters In Philadelphia, Emily Casaletto, Rickie Brawer, Phd, Mph, Mches

Phase 1

Introduction: Nutritional diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and cholesterol disorders are particularly high among individuals experiencing homelessness in comparison to the general United States population, leading the propagation of chronic health conditions and overuse of expensive healthcare resources. In addition, the food served in homeless shelters is the main source of nutrition for those living in these shelters, most notably when there is no option for food storage available. Despite the disproportionate prevalence of nutrition-related diseases among the homeless population, there is limited research on the quality of the food provided in homeless shelters and there are few policies to …

Modulation Of Sleep-Courtship Balance By Nutritional Status In Drosophila, José M Duhart, Victoria Baccini, Yanan Zhang, Daniel R Machado, Kyunghee Koh Oct 2020

Modulation Of Sleep-Courtship Balance By Nutritional Status In Drosophila, José M Duhart, Victoria Baccini, Yanan Zhang, Daniel R Machado, Kyunghee Koh

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Sleep is essential but incompatible with other behaviors, and thus sleep drive competes with other motivations. We previously showed Drosophila males balance sleep and courtship via octopaminergic neurons that act upstream of courtship-regulating P1 neurons (Machado et al., 2017). Here, we show nutrition modulates the sleep-courtship balance and identify sleep-regulatory neurons downstream of P1 neurons. Yeast-deprived males exhibited attenuated female-induced nighttime sleep loss yet normal daytime courtship, which suggests male flies consider nutritional status in deciding whether the potential benefit of pursuing female partners outweighs the cost of losing sleep. Trans-synaptic tracing and calcium imaging identified dopaminergic neurons projecting to …

JCPH at APHA 2019

Photographer and researcher John Collier first named photo elicitation in a paper published in 1957. Photo elicitation involves a qualitative interview stimulated and guided by participant photographs. This method can help break down barriers between researchers and participants and can promote rich and collaborative discussions (Harper, 1994).

Student Perspectives on Work-Life Balance: A Photo Elicitation Study

Each student in Qualitative Research Methods (PBH 512, Summer 2018) recruited a study participant (n=12) from across the colleges of Thomas Jefferson University. Students trained participants in the appropriate and ethical use of this method. Study participants were asked to define and explore the …

Diet And Nutrition In Cancer Survivorship And Palliative Care., Anthony J Bazzan, Andrew B Newberg, William C Cho, Daniel A Monti Jan 2013

Diet And Nutrition In Cancer Survivorship And Palliative Care., Anthony J Bazzan, Andrew B Newberg, William C Cho, Daniel A Monti

Marcus Institute of Integrative Health Faculty Papers

The primary goal of palliative cancer care is typically to relieve suffering and improve quality of life. Most approaches to diet in this setting have focused only on eating as many calories as possible to avoid cachexia. However, as the concept of palliative care has evolved to include all aspects of cancer survivorship and not just end of life care, there is an increasing need to thoughtfully consider diet and nutrition approaches that can impact not only quality of life but overall health outcomes and perhaps even positively affect cancer recurrence and progression. In this regard, there has been a …

Nutrition-Spinal Cord Injury Manual, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital And Magee Rehabilitation

Spinal Cord Injury Manual (English)

Introduction-Why Nutrition Matters

Nutrition is important for everyone to maintain good health. After a spinal cord injury, nutrition can be even more important to improve overall wellness, achieve and maintain a healthy weight and help regulate bowel and bladder function. Eating a well balanced diet can help prevent the long term complications associated with SCI such as weight gain, deconditioning and skin breakdown.

A well-balanced diet can provide all of the nutrients that your body needs. Foods high in fiber, along with plenty of water, help regulate bowel function. However, if you eat more than you need, you can gain …

Diet, Nutrition, Obesity And Their Role In Arthritis, Peter F. Sharkey, David L. Paskin, Thomas D. Meade, Richard H. Rothman

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Obesity and poor nutrition, individually and together, have created costly musculoskeletal disease epidemic in the United States. Processed food, with abundant "empty" calories, has contributed greatly to our dietary woes. Much of the food consumed today is packed with calories but refined to the point that essential nutrients are lacking. Even worse, processed food may have ingredients added that are detrimental to good health. Abundant research has documented a close relationship between obesity, poor diet and orthopaedic problems. Dietary supplements have been proven to provide both disease prevention and therapeutic benefits. Unfortunately, many weight loss programs and methods are ineffective …

Inadequate Physician Knowledge Of The Effects Of Diet On Blood Lipids And Lipoproteins., Mary M. Flynn, Chris N. Sciamanna, Kevin C. Vigilante Dec 2003

Inadequate Physician Knowledge Of The Effects Of Diet On Blood Lipids And Lipoproteins., Mary M. Flynn, Chris N. Sciamanna, Kevin C. Vigilante

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND:To assess the nutrition knowledge of physicians on the basic effects of diet on blood lipids and lipoproteins.

METHODS:Anonymous mailed dietary knowledge surveys to 6000 randomly selected physicians in the United States licensed in either Internal Medicine or Cardiology.RESULTS:Response rate: 16% (n = 639). Half of the physicians did not know that canola oil and 26% did not know olive oil were good sources of monounsaturated fat. Ninety-three percent (84% of cardiologists vs. 96% of internists; p < 0.001) did not know that a low-fat diet, in general, would increase blood triglycerides. Approximately three-quarters (70% of cardiologists vs. 77% of internists; p < 0.01) did not know a low-fat diet would decrease HDL-c and almost half (45%) thought that a low-fat diet would not change HDL-c.

CONCLUSIONS:If physicians are to implement dietary and cholesterol management guidelines, they will likely need to become more knowledgeable about nutrition.
