Nursing Education In Complementary Alternative Modalities: A Case Study, Deborah Bird
Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of this embedded case study was to describe the preparation for and utilization of complimentary alternative modality (CAM) interventions by an experienced Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) prepared nurse practitioner (NP) working in an outpatient setting.
Background: Given the widespread use of CAM by the American public and the potential complications involved in combining CAM and standard medical care, a lack of educational preparation in CAM interventions by NPs delivering primary care in outpatient health care settings represents both a potential risk and a missed opportunity to provide holistic patient care. Such a lack of knowledge also …

A Survey To Highlight Areas Of Focus For Patient Care In Settings Utilizing Medical Interpretation, Azayzel Deregis
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis recounts my personal experience working as a volunteer medical interpreter for the Language and Culture Resource Center at East Tennessee State University. The result of my time spent volunteering as a medical interpreter, shadowing professional medical interpreters, and witnessing patient-provider interactions during interpreted sessions was an inspiration to study medical interpretation further and delve into the challenges faced by patients who require medical interpreters. During my time researching this topic, I found that the United States is severely lacking in Spanish medical interpreters—with some healthcare facilities employing no medical interpreters—even though the size of the Hispanic population is …

Implementation Of An Asthma Action Plan In A Pediatric Outpatient Clinic, Noelle Cerdan
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
A combination of asthma evidence-based education by nurse practitioners and other healthcare providers as well as self-management by patients with asthma and their caregivers are necessary to provide effective asthma care. According to the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) guidelines from the National Institute of Health (NIH), effective asthma care includes a detailed Asthma Action Plan (AAP). However, despite this evidence-based recommendation for all patients with asthma, studies suggest many healthcare providers do not routinely utilize an AAP.
The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to develop and evaluate a process for the integration …

Uams Summer Health Literacy Study, Merritt Osment
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Background: Health Literacy is a barrier to self-care; patients often lack the skills to understand complicated instructions that deal with medications, wound care, follow up schedules, and preventative care. Patients who undergo hip and knee replacements are often older adults, a population that normally struggles with various aspects of health literacy. Patient education materials are a common means of communicating with these individuals. However, if the patient does not understand the materials that they are given, they are more likely to experience negative side effects after their operation. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the health literacy …

Quality Improvement Through Evidence-Based Education: Advancing Obesity Awareness And Clinical Management Strategies For People Living With Mental Disorders, Ellis Ehizele Opusunju
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
People living with mental disorders (PLWMDs) are at an increased risk for developing obesity due to poor diet, physical inactivity, and antipsychotic medications. In the United States, the general-population obesity rate is 36% compared to more than 50% for PLWMDs. Mental health professionals (MHPs), focused on addressing psychiatric conditions, seldom recognize and clinically manage obesity. Furthermore, this population is socioeconomically disadvantaged with poor dietary habits while consuming psychiatric medications that stimulate hunger, further exacerbating the risk for obesity. The Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Healthcare Services (PARISHS) framework guided this quality improvement project to improve obesity awareness and management …

Abstract Related to Algorithm:
Description/Background
Improving pain management is a priority for all healthcare providers, yet the process for how pain is assessed, reported and resolved often lacks a defined process. This lack of structure can lead to delays in pain control for patients and frustrations within healthcare teams. In an effort to facilitate patient-centered care, an interdisciplinary workgroup was constructed to address this process.
Action
In order to eliminate delays and define a process for pain management, an interdisciplinary workgroup utilized performance improvement processes to develop a communication algorithm. The group membership included nurses, physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing …

The Call Of Nursing: Stories From The Frontlines Of Nursing, Melissa Erickson
The Call Of Nursing: Stories From The Frontlines Of Nursing, Melissa Erickson
Book Chapters
The Call of Nursing is not a typical book about nurses. It takes us behind the curtain of silence that often hangs between us -- the patients who rely on the health care system -- and the women and men who form the backbone of that system, and who are entrusted with our intimate care.
Melissa Erickson:
I worked in Women Care at a large hospital in Minneapolis which delivers more babies than any other hospital in the state. Women Care is a level IV obstetric care facility. Primarily, I cared for high-risk mothers and babies there, including high-order multiples. …

The Use Of Remote Monitoring For Internal Cardioverter Defibrillators (Icds): The Infusion Of Information Technology And Medicine, Susan Shirato, Msn, Rn, Ccrn
College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations
The clinical use of automated implantable cardioverter defibrillators (AICDs) has been rapidly increasing since the results of several randomized trials confirmed the efficacy of AICDs in the secondary and primary prevention of sudden cardiac death. Patients with AICDs require high-quality care and intense follow-up to ensure safe and effective device performance. According to international guidelines these patients should be followed at 1- to 4 month intervals, depending on the device model and the patient’s clinical status (Schoenfeld, 2004). Given the expanding indications for use and the complexity of these devices, there is an urgent need to develop new means of …
