The Role Of Superb Microvascular Imaging In Detecting Low-Grade Inflammation Among Adults And Those With Chronic Kidney Disease: A Preliminary Study, Alaaddi̇n Nayman, Nusret Seher, Mehmet Öztürk, Hali̇l Özer, Gülperi̇ Çeli̇k

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Pathophysiologic changes associated with chronic inflammation occur with aging and more prominently in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and an association between chronic inflammation and muscle wasting has been identified. The microcirculation is extremely sensitive to the inflammatory process and actively participates in it. In a healthy adult, angiogenesis is a strictly controlled and rare occurrence. However, aberrant angiogenesis and the development of new tiny blood vessels are known in chronic inflammatory diseases. Superb microvascular imaging (SMI) is a noninvasive technique that can evaluate tiny vessels with low blood flow and provide quantitative data. Our goal was to …

Background/Aim: The patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) are living longer compared to the past, but respiratory failure is still the most common cause of mortality. The aim of this study is to investigate factors associated with severe lung disease in a cohort of adult patients with CF. Materials and methods: Demographic data, clinical and laboratory findings of the patients aged 18 years and more were collected and the patients were grouped according to forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) as severe group:

Optimum Recording Time Of Routine Electroencephalogram For Adults With Epilepsy*, Kemal Tutkavul, Yilmaz Çeti̇nkaya

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study aimed to reveal the optimum recording time of routine electroencephalogram (EEG) for adults with epilepsy.Materials and methods: In this clinical observational study we investigated features of paroxysms that emerged in EEGs recorded for 45 min in adults with epilepsy. Results: Paroxysms were detected in 38.14% of 97 patients. The probability of occurrence of paroxysm during the first 10 min was found to be statistically significantly low in comparison to the first 30 and 45 min (respectively P = 0.004, P = 0.0001). This probability was found to increase insignificantly when comparing the first 20 min with the first …

We reported of the extremely rare adult case with hemangiomas of the vocal cord. Larengeal hemangiomas is the most common disease in infantile patients, and respiratory distress is a main symptom in this entity. But adult hemangiomas in vocal cord are very rare conditions, and hoarseness is a main symptom. A 40 years old man with hoarseness and slight difficulty in breathing was presented . Diagnostic investigation revealed a pink-purple mass which was mobile with respiration and extended from the anterior comissure to the posterior part of vocal cord. Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Neuroblastoma is a common malignancy in children, but rarely occurs in adults. Neuroblastoma occurring in adolescents, compared to those occurring in children, are more frequently diagnosed in advanced stages and have common sites of metastases. Currently there are no standard treatment guidelines for patients with neuroblastoma in adulthood. If treated with standard protocols as those used for children, their survival is poor, particularly patients with localized disease seem to have a more aggressive course compared to children.
