Determinants Of Stroke Inpatient Charge In Chronic Rehabilitation Wards Of A Community Hospital In Taiwan, Allen C.L. Hsu, Miao-Ming Chen, Chih-Kuang Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Stroke is a disease with severe consequences which impose a considerable socio-economic burden on patients and society. In developed countries, stroke patients alone generate about 3-4% of the direct costs within the healthcare system. The costs of rehabilitation and long-term care of disabled stroke survivors are expected to rise even further because of the increasing number of the aging population and declining stroke case-fatality rates. The aims of the paper are to evaluate the factors that may influence costs of stroke patients in chronic rehabilitation wards for better management of medical resources. This study was conducted at a local general …

Retrospective Study Of Neurogenic Bladder Complications In Patients With Chronic Spinal Cord Injury, Sheng-Min Chang, Sheng-Wei Zeng

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Recent advances in medicine have greatly prolonged the average lifespan of patients with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). However, many complications arise as the disease enters the chronic phase. SCI is known to cause limb weakness and paresthesia, it also causes multiple system abnormalities that cannot be easily ignored. Particularly troublesome issues develop due to the urinary system complications resulting from the neurogenic bladder. These include overactive bladder, detrusor external sphincter dyssynergia, vesicoureteral reflux, urolithiasis, urinary tract infection (UTI), and even chronic kidney disease. All these issues cause annoying problems that disturb the patient’s health and quality of life. The …

Is Vertical Orientation Ability And Visual Feedback Training Strategy Useful For Pusher Syndrome After Stroke: A System Reviewarticle, Chien-Hsun Lee

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Stroke patients with pusher syndrome (PS) have a longer recovery time than those without this disorder. This special syndrome causes difficulty in maintaining balance when sitting or standing, with sufferers "pushing and leaning" automatically to hemi-side. PS patients may also have cognition impairment, hemi-neglect, or aphasia. Alleviating all these factors requires extensive training for therapists, however, few undergo such training. Wang et. al. published a reviewarticle article in Taiwan Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in 2005, and the conclusions drawn were: 1) PS patients have abnormal subjective posture and vertical orientation ability; 2) training strategies that use visual feedback …

Structural And Tissue-Level Adaptations Of Lumbar Intervertebral Discs In Humans With Inducible Low Back Pain Symptoms, Christian Isaiah Weber

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Low back pain (LBP) is a devastating musculoskeletal ailment that impacts majority of the global population. Up to 95% of cases are considered nonspecific where the origin is unclear. Although there is a diagnosis with these cases, there lacks specificity that would help individuals with treatment and pain management. Imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are primarily utilized in the diagnosis of LBP as it illuminates internal structures of the spine. One important structure clearly identified with MRI is the intervertebral disc (IVD) that is susceptible to injury and disease. Further, diagnostic imaging is performed lying down where …
