Managing and caring for patients who are undergoing alcohol withdrawal presents challenges for nurses in an inpatient setting. These challenges are influenced by factors such as negative attitudes, lack of knowledge and poor satisfaction. The purpose of this quality improvement initiative was to determine whether the effects of implementing an alcohol educational program would improve knowledge and satisfaction while reducing negative attitudes. Background: Simulation-based learning (SBL) shows promise to potentially improve clinical competence in nursing education. The efficacy of evidence-based prebriefing activities and valid and reliable systems to evaluate those strategies is a gap in the literature. Preliminary evidence shows that prebriefing can improve participant outcomes. The goal of this pilot study was to compare the outcome of clinical competence for prelicensure nursing students based on assignment to one of the following prebriefing activities: standard, careplan, or concept mapping. At the end of life, many patients suffer from a syndrome that simulates classic small bowel obstruction. The traditional approach to intestinal obstruction is relief of pressure in the gastrointestinal tract using mechanical methods such as naso-gastric tube insertion and suctioning. This relieves the distension of the hollow organs and thus the nausea.. Pharmacologic methods are also used in the care of these patients, however, there is debate as to which agents to use and when to use them. The purpose of this study was to explore organizational learning in an orthopaedic hospital unit. Skill in organizational learning is necessary to achieve high reliability in a dynamic healthcare environment, yet organizational learning in hospital units is not well understood. A learning history was conducted with a high-performing orthopaedic unit. Findings were interpreted in the context of a previous learning history conducted with a critical care unit. Despite contextual differences, each unit progressed through the same four developmental stages to achieve its current state of high reliability. In order to provide effective clinical teaching and learning in Ghana, preceptorship was introduced in nursing education and preceptors were prepared primarily to provide clinical teaching at the clinical settings in Ghana. Challenges in Securing Community Nursing Rotation Sites Eighteen years of providing clinical placement for Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students has demonstrated that community-based educational opportunities are shrinking due to:

•Increased regulatory requirements

•Competing numbers of nursing schools

•Increasing student enrollment

•Decreasing availability of community resources capable and willing to precept students

These issues present challenges to preparing students for nursing practice. A college of nursing at an urban, academic health center found a solution by working with unexpected partners – maximum security prisons and juvenile detention centers.

Purpose

To explore inpatient pediatric nurses' current experiences and perspectives on medication teaching.

Design and Methods

A descriptive qualitative study was conducted at a Midwest pediatric hospital. Using convenience sampling, 26 nurses participated in six focus groups. Data were analyzed in an iterative group coding process.

Results

Three themes emerged. 1) Medication teaching is an opportunity. 2) Medication teaching is challenging. Nurses experienced structural and process challenges to deliver medication teaching. Structural challenges included the physical hospital environment, electronic health record, and institutional discharge workflow while process challenges included knowledge, relationships and interactions with caregivers, and available resources. 3) Medication …

Contemporary nursing practice is morally pluralistic and at times, nurses may be faced with a conflict of conscience that motivates them to voice their ethical concerns about patient care provision that they perceive to be unethical. This concern can result in the format of a conscientious objection. Conscientious objection involves an individual objecting to doing something they deem unethical and to refrain from participating in that unethical action.

From 1999-2013, the nationwide incidence of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) due to maternal drug use rose from 1.5/1000 to 6/1000 hospital births. There is a dearth of information regarding what happens to these children when they are discharged. The purpose of this Practice Inquiry Project is to utilize existing Delaware Medicaid data to retrospectively explore the utilization of services and gaps in care for the infant with NAS in the first year of life. An acute bronchospasm during general anesthesia can become a life-threatening intraoperative condition for any patient. Bronchospasm occurs when the bronchial smooth muscle constricts which makes ventilating the patient difficult, and can ultimately lead to hypoventilation, hypoxemia, and metabolic acidosis. It’s imperative for any anesthesia provider to understand what a bronchospasm is, its pathophysiology, differential diagnosis, and algorithm of treatments. The belief that crying leads to healing is so widely held and of such longstanding that many healthcare professionals—including nurses, physicians, psychiatrists, and psychologists—accept it as fact even though there is little substantiating scientific evidence. Crying is commonly believed to be an essential factor in restoring mind-body equilibrium after physical and/or emotional trauma has been experienced.
