In addition to the T2R bitter taste receptors, neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) have recently been shown to be involved in the bitter taste transduction of nicotine, acetylcholine and ethanol. However, at present it is not clear if nAChRs are expressed in enteroendocrine cells other than beta cells of the pancreas and enterochromaffin cells, and if they play a role in the synthesis and release of neurohumoral peptides. Accordingly, we investigated the expression and functional role of nAChRs in enteroendocrine STC-1 cells. Our studies using RT-PCR, qRT-PCR, immunohistochemical and Western blotting techniques demonstrate that STC-1 cells express several α and …

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Apolipoprotein E ɛ4 allele is a common susceptibility gene for late-onset Alzheimer's disease. Brain vascular and metabolic deficits can occur in cognitively normal apolipoprotein E ɛ4 carriers decades before the onset of Alzheimer's disease. The goal of this study was to determine whether early intervention using rapamycin could restore neurovascular and neurometabolic functions, and thus impede pathological progression of Alzheimer's disease-like symptoms in pre-symptomatic Apolipoprotein E ɛ4 transgenic mice. Using in vivo, multimodal neuroimaging, we found that apolipoprotein E ɛ4 mice treated with rapamycin had restored cerebral blood flow, blood–brain barrier integrity and glucose metabolism, compared …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Introduction and objectives: The European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation II (euroSCORE II) is a validated model for predicting perioperative mortality after cardiac surgery. The role of cardio-respiratory fitness (CRF), expressed as peak metabolic equivalents (METs), as a predictor of long-term survival in patients who have previously undergone coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is well established. However, the correlation between perioperative risk and CRF has not been evaluated. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between perioperative risk and CRF in patients after CABG. Methods: Patients who underwent CABG from January 2012 through December 2013 at …

The Effect Of Outpatient Physiotherapy After Stroke On Cardiopulmonary Training Goals: The Current Situation In A Single Medical Center, Yichun Lu, Chiachi Huang, Chenliang Chou Dec 2015

The Effect Of Outpatient Physiotherapy After Stroke On Cardiopulmonary Training Goals: The Current Situation In A Single Medical Center, Yichun Lu, Chiachi Huang, Chenliang Chou

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Study background and objectives: Reduced cardiopulmonary function after stroke has drawn increasing attention. Cardiovascular function and muscle fiber composition change after stroke, leading to a decline in physical fitness. Some studies have also reported decreased maximum oxygen uptake after stroke, which would further reduce patient ability to perform daily life functions, inducing a circle of disability and reduced mobility. Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation after early or late strokes has been found to improve cardiopulmonary function; these improvements are especially noticeable in patients with lower levels of physical activity before their stroke onset. However, traditional rehabilitation programs mostly focus on recovery of limb …

Deep Vein Thrombosis In An Ambulatory Hemiparetic Stroke Patient Probably Due To Exercise-Related Repetitive Impact: A Casereport, Kun-Chang Lee, Chien-Ting Liu, Pi-Wei Wang, An-Fang Hsiao, Yi-Shiung Horng

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the lower extremity is a multifactorial and potentially fatal complication following stroke. However, repetitive impact on the lower extremity is a relatively uncommon risk factor for DVT. We report an ambulatory hemiparetic stroke patient who, without classic DVT risk factors, developed a lower extremity DVT probably due to repetitive impact on the popliteal fossa after the inappropriate use of a seated leg flexion machine. This case can remind physiatrists and therapists of the importance of preventing patients from using non-ergonomic postures during training sessions.

Neurologists Look At Causes Of Baffling Brain Condition, Maggie Freleng

Capstones

It can be hard getting help for someone with mental illness, but almost impossible when that person doesn't think they are sick. At at least half of people with schizophrenia, for example, insist that the voices they hear are real. People who do not know they are ill often refuse therapy and medication -- and their symptoms can spiral out of control. Doctors call this lack of awareness anosognosia. Neurologists are trying to discover what causes this baffling condition--and how to treat it.

Suppression Of F1 Male-Specific Lethality In Caenorhabditis Hybrids By Cbr-Him-8, Vaishnavi Ragavapuram, Emily Elaine King, Scott Everet Baird

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Haldane's Rule and Darwin's Corollary to Haldane's Rule are the observations that heterogametic F1 hybrids frequently are less fit than their homogametic siblings and that asymmetric results often are obtained from reciprocal hybrid crosses. In Caenorhabditis, Haldane's Rule and Darwin's Corollary have been observed in several hybrid crosses, including crosses of Caenorhabditis briggsae and Caenorhabditis nigoni. Fertile F1 females are obtained from reciprocal crosses. However, F1 males obtained from C. nigoni mothers are sterile and F1 males obtained from C. briggsae die during embryogenesis. We have identified cbr-him-8 as a recessive maternal-effect suppressor of F1 hybrid male-specific lethality …

Comparison Of The Effects Of Prolotherapy And Traditional Physical Therapy In Low Back Pain Patients With Lumbosacral Transitional Vertebra, Weihan Chang, Shihwei Chou, Chienhung Chen, Chihkuan Wu, Katie P. Wu, Yinchou Lin Dec 2015

Wu, Yinchou Lin

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

A lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LSTV) is a congenital musculoskeletal abnormality with a higher incidence in patients with low back pain as to the normal population. Such finding implicates that an altered mechanics caused by a transitional vertebra may contribute to pain generation. In cadavers with an LSTV, the iliolumbar ligament at the level immediately above the transitional vertebra was thinner and weaker than it was for cadavers without an LSTV. This ligament of LSTV is vulnerable to sprains in terms of structural and biomechanical alterations and may be the target of treatment. Twenty-two patients with chronic low back pain in …
