Giant-Cell Tumor Of The Cervical Spine In An Adult Female With Neck Stiffness: A Casereport, Kuan-Yu Chu, Wen-Sheng Liu, Yen-Ting Lai, I-Pu Juang, Shu-Huan Lin

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Giant-cell tumor of the bone is relatively common in young adults, especially those in the third decades of life. This tumor occurs most frequently in long bones, such as the distal femur or proximal tibia, but rarely in the cervical spine. Giant-cell tumor of the cervical spine is rarely considered in the differential diagnosis of neck pain; thus, diagnosis of giant-cell tumor of the cervical spine is typically delayed or misdiagnosed. We present a case of giant-cell tumor of the cervical spine in a 25-year-old woman initially diagnosed with neck stiffness and muscle strain. She developed upper trunk numbness in …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Neck and shoulder pain is a common clinical complaint. However, the associated mechanism of this condition is thought to be multifactorial and is not yet fully understood. Various studies and multiple clinical experiences have shown the effectiveness of treatment with botulinum toxin type A in the improvement of dystonia and muscle spasticity. The mechanism of the analgesic effect of botulinum toxin type A has also been widely investigated. Many studies have addressed the use of botulinum toxin type A in the treatment of myofascial pain, but its effectiveness and side effects remain controversial. This casereport describes a young woman with …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Post-translational modification of bacterial elongation factor P (EF-P) with (R)-β-lysine at a conserved lysine residue activates the protein in vivo and increases puromycin reactivity of the ribosome in vitro. The additional hydroxylation of EF-P at the same lysine residue by the YfcM protein has also recently been described. The roles of modified and unmodified EF-P during different steps in translation, and how this correlates to its physiological role in the cell, have recently been linked to the synthesis of polyproline stretches in proteins. Polysome analysis indicated that EF-P functions in translation elongation, rather than initiation as proposed previously. This was …

Quantitative Evaluation Of Motor Control Of Upper Limbs After Neuro-Robot Rehabilitation, Shu-Min Chen, Yu-Chia Tsai, Ming-Shaung Ju, Bing-Cheng Kung

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Function of the upper limbs is crucial in daily activities. Motor recovery of upper limbs after stroke is slower and less complete than of lower limbs. During the recovery period, abnormal synergies always disturb daily life activity. Various therapeutic techniques have been developed to improve the function of upper limbs after stroke, such as the neuro-rehabilitation robot, which was developed in recent years and shows numerous positive outcomes for upper-limb facilitation after stroke. For the evaluation of motor recovery after stroke, Brunnstrom stages and the Modified Ashworth scale are commonly used and convenient. However, both depend heavily on the evaluator …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Torticollis is characterized by a lateral head tilt with chin rotation toward the opposite side. Congenital muscular torticollis remains the most common etiology in infancy. However, many different conditions, including anomaly of central nervous system, can cause the condition. The differential diagnosis is therefore important. An 8-month-old baby girl presented to our rehabilitation clinic with torticollis since 3 months of age. Her body weight, height and general appearance were normal at birth. At examination, horizontal nystagmus was noted while she gazed toward the right side, as well as head tilting to the left and chin pointing at the opposite side. There …

Successfully Climbing The "Stairs": Surmounting Failed Translation Of Experimental Ischemic Stroke Treatments, Michael Kahle, Gregory J. Bix Dec 2012

Successfully Climbing The "Stairs": Surmounting Failed Translation Of Experimental Ischemic Stroke Treatments, Michael Kahle, Gregory J. Bix

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

The Stroke Therapy Academic Industry Roundtable (STAIR) provided initial (in 1999) and updated (in 2009) recommendations with the goal of improving preclinical stroke therapy assessment and to increase the translational potential of experimental stroke treatments. It is important for preclinical stroke researchers to frequently consider and revisit these concepts, especially since promising experimental stroke treatments continue to fail in human clinical trials. Therefore, this paper will focus on considerations for several key aspects of preclinical stroke studies including the selection and execution of the animal stroke model, drug/experimental treatment administration, and outcome measures to improve experimental validity and translation potential. …

Regulation Of The Mouse And Human Β-Globin Genes By Krüppel Like Transcription Factors Klf1 And Klf2, Yousef N. Alhashem Dec 2012

Regulation Of The Mouse And Human Β-Globin Genes By Krüppel Like Transcription Factors Klf1 And Klf2, Yousef N. Alhashem

Theses and Dissertations

Krüppel-like factors KLF1 and KLF2 are closely related transcription factors with three zinc finger domains in their carboxy-termini. KLF1 (erythroid Krüppel-like factor, or EKLF) plays essential roles in embryonic and adult erythropoiesis. KLF2 is a positive regulator of the mouse and human embryonic β- globin genes. KLF1 and KLF2 have overlapping roles in embryonic erythropoiesis, as demonstrated using single and double knockout (KO) mouse models. Ablation of the KLF1 or KLF2 gene causes embryonic lethality, and double KO embryos are more anemic and die sooner than either single KO. We have shown that KLF1 and KLF2 positively regulate the human …

A Case Study Of Resistiveness To Care And Elderspeak, Jacqueline Cunningham, Kristine Williams

Kristine N. Williams

Resistiveness to care (RTC) by persons with dementia significantly adds to subjective and objective burden for caregivers and may be triggered by environmental factors, including communication. This case study evaluated behavioral responses of a nursing home resident with dementia to nursing staff use of elderspeak communication (infantilizing speech). Four videotaped staff-resident interactions that were previously recorded were coded for staff elderspeak communication and resident RTC. Total elderspeak scores (M = 29.5, SD = 25.74) and RTC scores (M = 8.75, SD = 13.79) were correlated r = 0.93, p = .03. This preliminary single-subject observational study suggests a …

Circularized Synthetic Oligodeoxynucleotides Serve As Promoterless Rna Polymerase Iii Templates For Small Rna Generation In Human Cells, Christine I. Seidl, Lodoe Lama, Kevin Ryan

Publications and Research

Synthetic RNA formulations and viral vectors are the two main approaches for delivering small therapeutic RNA to human cells. Here we report findings supporting an alternative strategy in which an endogenous human RNA polymerase (RNAP) is harnessed to make RNA hairpin-containing small RNA from synthetic single-stranded DNA oligonucleotides. We report that circularizing a DNA template strand encoding a pre-microRNA hairpin mimic can trigger its circumtranscription by human RNAP III in vitro and in human cells. Sequence and secondary structure preferences that appear to promote productive transcription are described. The circular topology of the template is required for productive transcription, at …
