B-Type Natriuretic Peptide (Bnp): A Potential Biomarker For Extubation Failure In Infants Following Cardiac Surgery, Jennifer Flint, Lori Erickson, Dawn Tucker, Erica Molitor-Kirsch Dec 2012

B-Type Natriuretic Peptide (Bnp): A Potential Biomarker For Extubation Failure In Infants Following Cardiac Surgery, Jennifer Flint, Lori Erickson, Dawn Tucker, Erica Molitor-Kirsch

Posters

Background: BNP is a hormone released from the cardiac ventricles in response to increased pressure and volume overload1 and is an important biomarker in heart failure. Following congenital heart surgery, elevated BNP levels correlate with longer duration of mechanical ventilation, low cardiac output syndrome, and increased ICU length of stay2-4 Mechanical ventilation (MV) has an exaggerated impact on cardiopulmonary interactions in children with myocardial dysfunction, and extubation readiness can be difficult to determine post-operatively following congenital heart surgery.

Hypothesis: An increase in post-extubation BNP levels can predict extubation failure and the need for reintubation within 48 hours.

Methods:

Design: prospective, …

System Dynamics Modeling Of Prescription Opioid Pain Reliever Abuse, Alexandra Nielsen Oct 2012

System Dynamics Modeling Of Prescription Opioid Pain Reliever Abuse, Alexandra Nielsen

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

The nonmedical use of prescription opioid pain relievers and associated overdose deaths have been labeled an epidemic by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. While these medicines play an important role in the treatment of pain, the benefits of opioids for the treatment of pain need to be balanced against these very real risks. Alex has been working closely with Professor Wayne Wakeland, Teresa Schmidt, and Dr. Dennis McCarty (OHSU) to create a dynamic systems-level model of opioid use, abuse, and diversion in order to give context to current research in this area and to provide a better understanding …

Evaluation Of A Mechanical Ventilator Education Program For Intern Physicians In An Intensive Care Nursery, William Bucher, Brian Glynn

Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Posters

Background: Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is a large urban Academic Medical Center with a level III Intensive Care Nursery (ICN). A new group of pediatric interns rotate through the ICN every year and receive limited education on mechanical ventilation. We developed a live, one hour training session performed by a Respiratory Therapist and a Respiratory Challenge Test to be completed by the physicians before and after each session. Clinical training was defined as routine training acquired during daily rotation in the ICN. We hypothesized that classroom and clinical training would be more effective than clinical training alone.

Method: After a …
