The purposes of this study were to examine coaches’ perceptions of distributive, procedural, and interactional justice regarding current resource distribution systems in intercollegiate athletics in terms of sport types (high profile sports vs. low profile sports) and gender of players (male participant sports vs. female participant sports) and the impacts of direct or indirect organizational justice on coaches’ attitudinal (job satisfaction and affective organizational commitment toward organization and supervisor) and behavioral (organizational citizenship behavior for organization and supervisor) outcomes through the mediating effects of met expectations, outcome satisfaction, and social exchange relationships (perceived organizational support and leader-member exchange) via a …

The Effectiveness Of A Specialized Upper Body Stretching Protocol On Ncaa Division I Athletes, Brandon M. Howard Dec 2009

The Effectiveness Of A Specialized Upper Body Stretching Protocol On Ncaa Division I Athletes, Brandon M. Howard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Previous studies with college athletes determined that the shoulder girdle plays a vital role in a variety of athletic activities. The previous research showed that a decrease in shoulder range of motion (ROM) was associated with a higher risk injury. Decreased shoulder ROM was shown to be a primary reason that many athletes were unable to perform many overhead lifting variations within their strength and conditioning programs.

The purpose of this research was to evaluate a group of athletes by means of a postural assessment using the overhead squat test. This study consisted of a pretest-post test control group design. …

The Relationship Between Residency And Socio-Demographics To Academic Performance In Ncaa Division I Freshman Athletes, Eric Matthew Snyder Dec 2009

The Relationship Between Residency And Socio-Demographics To Academic Performance In Ncaa Division I Freshman Athletes, Eric Matthew Snyder

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Numerous studies have been completed on the academic ability of student athletes. Since the mid 1980s, the NCAA has emphasized the importance of academics and mandated more stringent requirements to be able to participate in intercollegiate athletics. These initial-eligibility standards have been successful in increasing overall graduation rates of student-athletes, but there remain a number of concerns. The purpose of the study was to determine if an NCAA D-I freshman student athlete's place of residency on campus, as opposed to off campus, while attending college during his/her freshman year had a statistically significant relationship to achievement as it relates to …

The Acute Effects Of Whole Body Vibration On Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull Performance, W. Guy Hornsby, Mark A. South, Ashley Kavanaugh, Andrew S. Layne, G. Gregory Haff, William A. Sands, Marco Cardinale, Michael W. Ramsey, Michael H. Stone Dec 2009

The Acute Effects Of Whole Body Vibration On Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull Performance, W. Guy Hornsby, Mark A. South, Ashley Kavanaugh, Andrew S. Layne, G. Gregory Haff, William A. Sands, Marco Cardinale, Michael W. Ramsey, Michael H. Stone

ETSU Faculty Works

Acute exposure to vibration has been suggested to produce transient increases in muscular strength (1,2,8), vertical jump displacement (4,8), and power output (2,6,7) recorded while performing various tasks. It has been hypothesized that the reported acute vibration induced increases in performance occur as a result of alterations in neuromuscular stimulation (1,3,4). Specifically, most studies have ascribed the observed improvements to the likeliness of Whole Body Vibration (WBV) in producing a “tonic vibration reflex” (TVR) in which the primary nerve endings of the Ia afferents of the muscle spindle are activated. This is thought to result in the excitation of the …

We reduced the number of sports sponsored from 20 to 14 maintaining 7 sports for women and 7 sports for men. The only sports maintained without a facility were Men’s baseball and Cross Country Track. We eliminated football, swimming and indoor & outdoor track and field for men and women.

Since 2005 The Athletics & Recreation Department has been focused on University wide transition and planning efforts. In that period we …

Motivational Profiles And Their Associations With Achievement Outcomes, Bo Shen, Nate Mccaughtry, Jeffrey J. Martin, Mariane Fahlman Oct 2009

Motivational Profiles And Their Associations With Achievement Outcomes, Bo Shen, Nate Mccaughtry, Jeffrey J. Martin, Mariane Fahlman

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

With the belief that theoretical integration in motivation may help us better understand motivational behavior, we designed this study to explore adolescents’ motivational profiles and their associations with knowledge acquisition, leisure-time exercise behaviors, and cardiorespiratory fitness. Middle school students from a large urban inner-city school district (N = 603, ages 12–14) completed questionnaires assessing motivational constructs and leisure-time exercise behavior. Knowledge and cardiorespiratory fitness were also assessed with a knowledge test and the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER) test, respectively. Using hierarchical cluster analysis, we found that students’ motivation in physical education could be explained from a multi-theoretical …

Shoulder Rehabilitation For The Injured Overhead-Throwing Athlete, Joshua M. Raskoff Sep 2009

Shoulder Rehabilitation For The Injured Overhead-Throwing Athlete, Joshua M. Raskoff

Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration

Baseball incorporates the violent motion of throwing as a main act of physical exertion. The shoulder joint is vulnerable to injury during this movement. The overall purpose of this study was to produce a rehabilitation program for injured overhead-throwing athletes and have it evaluated by healthcare professionals. A paper and pen style questionnaire was sent through the mail to a network of professionals in California. Eighteen of the 20 questionnaires were returned. The quantitative feedback of the Likert scale questions indicated that the program was effective and usable while the qualitative feedback indicated the opposite. The additional comments allowed experts …

Sleep-Disordered Breathing Affects Auditory Processing In 5–7 Year-Old Children: Evidence From Brain Recordings, Alexandra P.F. Key, Dennis L. Molfese, Louise O’Brien, David Gozal

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty and Staff Publications

Poor sleep in children is associated with lower neurocognitive functioning and increased maladaptive behaviors. The current study examined the impact of snoring (the most common manifestation of sleep-disordered breathing) on cognitive and brain functioning in a sample of 35 asymptomatic children ages 5–7 years identified in the community as having habitual snoring (SDB). All participants completed polysomnographic, neurocognitive (NEPSY) and psychophysiological (ERPs to speech sounds) assessments. The results indicated that sub-clinical levels of SDB may not necessarily lead to reduced performance on standardized behavioral measures of attention and memory. However, brain indices of speech perception and discrimination (N1/P2) are sensitive …

Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS) are prohibited substances in sport due to their ability to improve muscle strength and power. Usually athletes who abuse these substances dose in cycles of up to 8-12 weeks. Whether the effects require this length of time to manifest is unknown. Also unknown is the minimum dose required and whether sports drug testing laboratories are able to detect all cases of AAS use by athletes. PURPOSE: To determine if the AAS, testosterone enanthate could increase strength and athletic performance in 3-6 weeks and the use the T/E ratio screening measure could detect the use of the …

Sonya Marshall-Gradisnik

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) plays several crucial roles in the body, mainly acting as a redox electron carrier in the mitochondria, being an essential antioxidant, and influencing the stability and function of membranes. Supplementation with CoQ10 has shown beneficial effects in cardiac and other types of patients. However, limited and conflicting information exists in the literature on performance-enhancing effects of CoQ10 in healthy and athletic populations. This study investigated the effects of four-week CoQ10 supplementation on aerobic power (VO2max) and exercise economy (oxygen consumption at steady state exercise) in six healthy, physically active men (mean age 29.7+/-SD7.2 years and VO2max 39.4+/-SD8.5 …

Exercise-Improved Walking Capacity In Patients With Peripheral Arterial Disease: Effects And Mechanisms, Jianxiong Wang, Shi Zhou, Sonya Marshall-Gradisnik, Roger Bronks, John Graham, Stephen Myers

Sonya Marshall-Gradisnik

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is an atherosclerotic disease. The most common symptom of PAD is intermittent claudication, a severe muscular pain in the lower limbs when walking. This symptom seriously deteriorates walking capacity and quality of life of PAD patients. It has been reported that exercise training can effectively enhance walking capacity in PAD patients. However, the mechanisms underlying the improved walking capacity have not been fully understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate some of the possible mechanisms using multi-disciplinary approaches. It has also been reported that an herbal medicine, ginkgo biloba extract, can improve peripheral circulation. …

The Effect Of Short-Term Use Of Testosterone Enanthate On Muscular Strength And Power In Healthy Young Males, Shane Rogerson, Robert Weatherby, Glen Deakin, Rudi Meir, Rosanne Coutts, Shi Zhou, Sonya Marshall-Gradisnik

Sonya Marshall-Gradisnik

Use of testosterone enanthate has been shown to significantly increase strength within 6–12 weeks of administration (2, 9), however, it is unclear if the ergogenic benefits are evident in less than 6 weeks. Testosterone enanthate is classified as a prohibited substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and its use may be detected by way of the urinary testosterone/epitestosterone (T/E) ratio (16). The two objectives of this study were to establish (a) if injection of 3.5 mg·kg−1 testosterone enanthate once per week could increase muscular strength and cycle sprint performance in 3–6 weeks; and (b) if the WADA-imposed urinary T/E …
