Megadose Methylprednisolone For Childhood Idiopathic Trombocytopenic Purpura (Itp), Şi̇nasi̇ Özsoylu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder. Decreased platelet survival is the main pathogenesis, which is related to platelet antibodies (APA). The levels of these antibodies are correlated with relapse and remission which was shown for the first time by our group. Although APA levels decrease in remission they do not disappear as we have shown. Among the several appraches to ITP treatment, oral megadose methylprednisolone is found to be the cheapest and most effective one. For oral MDMP treatment, admission of the patients is not required and there is some evidence that chronic ITP could be prevented by …

Pharmacotherapy In Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (Cpr), Berri̇n Günaydin Jan 2005

Pharmacotherapy In Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (Cpr), Berri̇n Günaydin

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Cardiac arrest is defined as cessation of cardiac mechanical activity. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an attempt to restore spontaneous circulation through several maneuvers and techniques. Although the two interventions, which are competent basic life support and prompt defibrillation, improve the survival rate, several adjuvant cardiac medication drugs are advocated to treat cardiac arrest during advanced cardiac life support. Since the introduction of modern CPR there have been many advances in the field of pharmacotherapy in CPR. Therefore, we aimed to summarise the cardiac medication drugs used for patients in ventricular fibrillation (VF) or pulseless ventricular tachycardia (VT) or non VF/VT …

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background: Tuberculosis causes 3 million deaths annually. The most common site of tuberculosis is pulmonary however; extra-pulmonary forms of the disease also remain prevalent. Restriction of Mycobacterium tuberculosis depends on effective recruitment and subsequent activation of T lymphocytes, mononuclear and polymorphonuclear cells to the site of infection. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α is essential for granuloma formation and is a potent activator of monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP-1, CCL2). CCL2 is essential for recruitment of monocytes and T cells and has been shown to play a role in protection against tuberculosis. Interleukin -8 (CXCL8) is a potent activator of neutrophils. Increased …

Differential Effect Of Glutathione Depletion On Glycogenolysis In Isolated Rat Hepatocytes Mediated By A-Adrenoceptor Agonists And Glucagon, Mukadder Atmaca, Jeffrey R. Fry Jan 2005

Differential Effect Of Glutathione Depletion On Glycogenolysis In Isolated Rat Hepatocytes Mediated By A-Adrenoceptor Agonists And Glucagon, Mukadder Atmaca, Jeffrey R. Fry

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Glutathione (GSH) exerts a variety of cytoprotecive effects, but is readily depleted from cells under a variety of stressful stimuli. The impact of GSH depletion on receptor-mediated activity in rat hepatocytes has been studied with regard to glycogenolysis stimulated with a-adrenoceptor agonists or glucagon, which exert their actions through different signalling pathways. Depletion of GSH content (70%) by diethyl maleate had no effect on the redox status of the cells or on basal or glucagon-stimulated glycogenolysis, but significantly reduced the response to the a-adrenoceptor agonists adrenalin and phenylephrine. These results highlight the possible modulatory effects of GSH on receptor-mediated activity …

Certain phenoxyacetate derivatives used as plant growth regulators act as plant hormones. 2,4-D dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid are widely used in vegetable growing, especially tomatoes, in our region. These phenoxyacetic acid compounds are a potential hazard for the environment. There are conflicting results and inconsistent data about these herbicides in the literature. This is the first report of genotoxicity of 4-CPA evaluated by sister chromatid exchange in human lymphocyte culture. No significant change was found in sister chromatid exchange frequency at the tested 4-CPA concentration.

Analysis Of Cell-Free Fetal Dna From Maternal Plasma And Serum Using A Conventional Multiplex Pcr: Factors Influencing Success, N. Lale Şatiroğlu, A. Çevi̇k Tufan, Babür Kaleli̇, Başak Yildirim, C. Nur Semerci̇, Hüseyi̇n Bağci

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Recent technology enables the use of cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma and serum for noninvasive prenatal genetic diagnosis. This study was designed to evaluate factors most likely to influence the success of a simple, cost efficient, reliable and replicable conventional PCR technique in the clinical routine of prenatal genetic diagnosis of selected cases. The results strongly suggest that DNA extraction and PCR cycle optimization are 2 major success-limiting steps and the maternal plasma is a better choice over serum for DNA extraction for such prenatal genetic diagnosis. In addition, the use of a ready-to-use PCR mixture containing heat-activated Taq …

Renal Ischemia And Reperfusion Activates The Eif2 Alpha Kinase Perk, Heather L. Montie, Foaz Kayali, Adam J. Haezebrouck, Noreen F. Rossi, Donald J. Degracia

PCOM Scholarly Papers

Inhibition of protein synthesis occurs in the post-ischemic reperfused kidney but the molecular mechanism of renal translation arrest is unknown. Several pathways have been identified whereby cell stress inhibits translation initiation via phosphorylation of the alpha subunit of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2a, phospho-form eIF2a(P)]. Here, we report a 20-fold increase in eIF2a(P) in kidney homogenates following 10 min of cardiac arrest-induced ischemia and 10 min reperfusion. Using immunohistochemistry, we observed eIF2a(P) in tubular epithelial cells in both cortex and medulla, where the greatest eIF2a(P) staining was found in epithelial cells of the so-called watershed area at the corticomedullary junction. …

Nutritional Deficiencies In Adults And Elderly, Luis Falque Madrid, Gladys E. Maestre, Raquel Zambrano, Yoraida Morán De Villalobos

School of Medicine Publications and Presentations

It is an unquestionable fact that the economic development and subsistence of nations depend highly on the health and adequate nutritional status of their economically active population. The concern arises in the light of evidence on adult nutritional deficiencies in some social strata of our country. Malnutrition is the pathological state that results from the inadequate consumption of one or more essential nutrients. Clinically it is manifested by biochemical tests and anthropometric indicators, and affects the response of the individual to different processes of disease as well as to the established therapies. Malnutrition is associated to loss of corporal fat …

Computational Studies Of Melatonin Analogues, Jessica Lynne Baima Jan 2005

Computational Studies Of Melatonin Analogues, Jessica Lynne Baima

Honors Theses

Melatonin (MLT, N-Acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine), a naturally occurring hormone produced by the pineal gland, plays a crucial role in the regulation of circadian rhythms. Melatonin supplements are utilized in treating various sleep disorders, but detrimental side effects currently discourages its use in space. Computer generated molecular models of MLT analogues were studied with the purpose of resolving the deficiencies within existing therapeutic agents by constructing an enhanced MLT analogue. The MT receptor binding data for each analogue was obtained from the literature and Sybyl 6.9 was used to perform 3-D quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) studies on eight data sets, using the comparative …

New Low And High Tech Calendar Methods Of Family Planning, Richard Fehring Dec 2004

New Low And High Tech Calendar Methods Of Family Planning, Richard Fehring

Richard J Fehring

Calendar-based methods are not usually considered effective or useful methods of family planning among health professionals. However, new “high-” and “low”-tech calendar methods have been developed, which are easy to teach, to use, and may be useful in helping couples avoid pregnancy. The low-tech models are based on a fixed-day calendar system. The high-tech models are based on monitoring urinary metabolites of female reproductive hormones. Both systems have high levels of satisfaction. This article describes these new models of family planning and the research on their effectiveness. The author proposes a new algorithm for determining the fertile phase of the …
