Bioelectrics Publications

In this study, food samples were intentionally contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7, and then DNA was isolated by using four commercial kits. The isolated DNA samples were compared by using real-time PCR detection of the Shiga toxin genes. The four kits tested worked similarly.

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

Substantially less development to the blastocyst stage occurs in vitro than in vivo and this may be due to deficiencies in oocyte competence. Although a large proportion of bovine oocytes undergo spontaneous nuclear maturation, less is known about requirements for proper cytoplasmic maturation. Commonly, supraphysiological concentrations of FSH and LH are added to maturation media to improve cumulus expansion, fertilization and embryonic development. Therefore, various concentrations of porcine FSH (pFSH) and recombinant human FSH (rhFSH) were investigated for their effect on bovine cumulus expansion in vitro. Expression of FSHr, LHr and Cx43 mRNAs was determined in cumulus-oocyte complexes to determine …

Stx1c Is The Most Common Shiga Toxin 1 Subtype Among Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia Coli Isolates From Sheep But Not Among Isolates From Cattle, Kim Brett, Vidiya Ramachandran, Michael A Hornitzky, Karl A Bettelheim, Mark J. Walker, Steven P. Djordjevic Jan 2003

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Unlike Shiga toxin 2 (stx2) genes, most nucleotide sequences of Shiga toxin 1 (stx1) genes from Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), Shigella dysenteriae, and several bacteriophages (H19B, 933J, and H30) are highly conserved. Consequently, there has been little incentive to investigate variants of stx1 among STEC isolates derived from human or animal sources. However stx1OX3, originally identified in an OX3:H8 isolate from a healthy sheep in Germany, differs from other stx1 subtypes by 43 nucleotides, resulting in changes to 12 amino acid residues, and has been renamed stx1c …

The Efficacy Of Moxidectin And Doramectin Against Gastrointestinal Nematode Infection In Cattle, Erol Ayaz, Ali̇ Şahi̇n Jan 2003

The Efficacy Of Moxidectin And Doramectin Against Gastrointestinal Nematode Infection In Cattle, Erol Ayaz, Ali̇ Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The efficacy of doramectin (Dectomax, Pfizer) and moxidectin (Cydectin, Abfar) against gastrointestinal nematode infection was evaluated in cows which were naturally infected with these nematodes. For that purpose over 100 cows' faeces were tested for gastrointestinal nematodes with the saturated salt solution method. Infected cows were selected according to the McMaster criteria. To establish whether the cows were infected with gastrointestinal nematodes, their coprocultures were screened for the presence of Ostertagia, Haemonchus, Nematodirus and Trichostrongylus species. Thirty cows which had acquired nematodes naturally were allocated to three groups of 10. The cows in the first and second group were administered …

Comparison Of Autogenous Vaccine And Autohaemotherapy Administrations In The Treatment Of Bovine Papillomatosis, Hali̇l Selçuk Bi̇ri̇ci̇k, Oktay Keski̇n, İbrahi̇m Çi̇mtay, Zeli̇ha Füsun Baba Jan 2003

Comparison Of Autogenous Vaccine And Autohaemotherapy Administrations In The Treatment Of Bovine Papillomatosis, Hali̇l Selçuk Bi̇ri̇ci̇k, Oktay Keski̇n, İbrahi̇m Çi̇mtay, Zeli̇ha Füsun Baba

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of autogenous vaccine, autohaemotherapy and autogenous vaccine-autohaemotherapy combinations in the treatment of bovine papillomatosis. The study was performed on 27 cattle aged between 1 and 2.5 years. The animals were divided into three groups (nine in each group) as autogenous vaccine, autohaemotherapy and autogenous vaccine-autohaemotherapy combinations. Doses of 10 ml per animal were injected subcutaneously at weekly intervals, a total of four times in the autogenous vaccine group. In the autohaemotherapy group, blood withdrawn from the jugular vein was administered at three-day intervals, a total of four times, in 40 …

Comparative Studies On The Efficacy Of Different Vaccination Methods In The Treatment Of Bovine Papillomatosis, İbrahi̇m Çi̇mtay, Hali̇l Selçuk Bi̇ri̇ci̇k, Oktay Keski̇n, Zeli̇ha Füsun Baba Jan 2003

Comparative Studies On The Efficacy Of Different Vaccination Methods In The Treatment Of Bovine Papillomatosis, İbrahi̇m Çi̇mtay, Hali̇l Selçuk Bi̇ri̇ci̇k, Oktay Keski̇n, Zeli̇ha Füsun Baba

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of autogenous, species-specific and herd-specific vaccination in the treatment of bovine papillomatosis. This study was performed on 24 female Holstein cattle aged between 8 and 17 months in the same herd. The animals were divided into three vaccination groups (eight cattle in each group) as autogenous, species-specific and herd-specific. A dose of 10 ml per animal was inoculated subcutaneously every 10 days, for a total of three times. The recovery status of the animals was checked for 3 months at 15-day intervals. In this study, all the animals fully recovered …

Detection Of Listeria Monocytogenes In Faeces From Chickens, Sheep And Cattle In Elazığ Province, Hakan Kalender Jan 2003

Detection Of Listeria Monocytogenes In Faeces From Chickens, Sheep And Cattle In Elazığ Province, Hakan Kalender

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Faecal samples collected from 206 chickens, 170 sheep and 130 cattle were investigated for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in animals slaughtered at local abattoirs in Elazığ. The prevalance of L. monocytogenes was 4.36% in chickens, 0.58% in sheep and 1.53% in cattle. Of the 12 L. monocytogenes isolates, seven (58.33%) and five (41.66%) belonged to serotypes 1 and 4, respectively. Other species isolated were L. innocua, L. welshimeri, L. seeligeri, L. murrayi and L. grayi. These results indicate that animal faeces could be a source of contamination of carcasses with L. monocytogenes and may lead to foodborne listeriosis.

The First Giardia Infection In Cattle Gall Bladder, Serpi̇l Değerli̇, Semra Özçeli̇k Jan 2003

The First Giardia Infection In Cattle Gall Bladder, Serpi̇l Değerli̇, Semra Özçeli̇k

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Giardia is a ubiquitously distributed flagellate protozoon that inhabits the small intestine of its host. In this paper, Giardia infection is reported in the gall bladder of an adult cow. Faecal samples from asymptomatic dairy cows and calves from several farms in Zara, Sivas, were studied by direct examination and the zinc sulphate flotation techniques. No Giardia cysts were found in 106 samples. In addition, the gall bladders of cattle provided from the slaughterhouse in Sivas were tested by direct and zinc sulphate flotation technique examination. Giardia trophozoites were found in 1.7% of the 56 gall bladders tested. This is …
