In the United States and throughout the world there is a serious concern in the growing nursing shortage. Many recruitment and retention techniques are currently being used to ease the nursing shortage. One such avenue is a nurse re-entry program. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the interest for a RN re-entry program in southeastern Ohio.

The low density lipoprotein receptor–related protein (LRP-1) binds and mediates the endocytosis of multiple ligands, transports the urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) and other membrane proteins into endosomes, and binds intracellular adaptor proteins involved in cell signaling. In this paper, we show that in murine embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) and L929 cells, LRP-1 functions as a major regulator of Rac1 activation, and that this activity depends on uPAR. LRP-1–deficient MEFs demonstrated increased Rac1 activation compared with LRP-1–expressing MEFs, and this property was reversed by expressing the VLDL receptor, a member of the same gene family as LRP-1, with overlapping ligand-binding specificity. …

PZR is an immunoglobulin superfamily cell surface protein containing a pair of immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motifs. As a glycoprotein, PZR displays a strong association with concanavalin A (ConA), a member of the plant lectin family. Treatment of several cell lines with ConA caused tyrosine phosphorylation of a major cellular protein. Immunoblotting and immunoprecipitation studies indicated that this protein corresponded to PZR. Tyrosine phosphorylation of PZR was accompanied by recruitment of SHP-2 and was inhibited by PP1, a selective inhibitor of the Src family tyrosine kinases. On September 13, 2002, a 26 year-old male Hispanic migrant worker (decedent) died when the tractor he was driving on a country roadway overturned. The decedent had experience driving the tractor in a field, but did not have experience driving it on a public roadway. Novel synthases and the corresponding nucleic acids encoding such synthases are disclosed herein. Such synthases possess an active site pocket that includes key amino acid residues that are modified to generate desired terpenoid reaction intermediates and products. Synthase modifications are designed based on, e.g., the three-dimensional coordinates of tobacco 5-epi-aristolochene synthase with or without a substrate bound in the active site.

Infection with immunosuppressive lentiviruses is associated with increased cancer risk,but most studies have implicated indirect mechanisms as the tumor cells generally lack integrated viral sequences.An exception wasfound in a B-cell lymphoma (Q254) where the tumor cells contained a single integrated feline immunodeficiency virus genome. Additional analysis now indicates that feline immunodeficiency virus integration in lymphoma Q254 resulted in promoter insertion and truncation of a conserved gene on feline chromosome B3, whereas the unaffected allele of the gene appeared to be transcriptionally down-regulated. Hepatocyte Growth Factor/Scatter Factor (HGF/SF) stimulates migration of various cells and has been linked via Met tyrosine kinase signaling to transformation and the metastatic phenotype. HGF/SF-Met signaling also plays a role in malignancy. Migration of transformed MDCK-F cells depends on activation of a charybdotoxin (ChTX)-sensitive, volume-activated membrane K⁺ current. Patch-clamp electrophysiology and transwell migration assays were used to study the effects of HGF/SF on membrane K⁺ currents and cell migration in MDCK II cells. Lithium continues to be widely prescribed for the management of bipolar disease, yet cognitive impairment-related side effects promote noncompliance of the treatment regimen. We have introduced a novel animal model, the black molly fish, to study dose-response effects of lithium on short-term (STM) and long-term (LTM) memories. We developed a method utilizing capillary ion analysis (CIA), to measure plasma and brain lithium levels employed in our behavioral studies. We then developed an appropriate testing environment to ascertain learning capacities of these fish. A female, grey, 24-year-old horse was showing clinical signs of weight loss, ataxia, hersutism, high fever, dysuria, nasal discharge and moist rale lung sounds. Gross examination revealed a single, white, firm, pituitary mass with a diameter 2.5 x 2.1 x 1.5 cm, compressed and overlying the hypothalamus. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations revealed the characteristic of a ACTH-derived pituitary adenoma.

The retrospective study of 30 cases records using formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded intestines, from Feline Panleukopenia (FPL) infected cats using histopathological criteria as seen by the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Chulalongkorn University between 1997-2001, was undertaken. The objective of the study was to examine FPLV infection in feline intestines showing characteristic lesions of parvovirus enteritis and to describe the relationship between the intestinal microscopic lesions of FPL in affected cats, with the location of FPL antigens, using immunohistochemical methods. A study was carried out on the invasion of Guppy skin by Tetrahymena spp. after various types of skin injury. Three types of skin injuries, scale removal, brush scratching and acetic acid irritation were performed. Tetrahymena spp. only the acetic acid irritation method allowed to invade the damaged skin. Guppy skin using this method, the fish caudal fin was covered with a 10%, acetic acid soaked, cotton strip for three minutes and exposed to water containing Tetrahymena spp. for 24 hours. The first commercial farm in Thailand to culture Abalone was studied to approve sanitation and food safety. Water quality and bacterial contamination criteria in both water from culturerelated sources and Abalone prior to marketing was examined. The water quality and bacteria found in the water samples (total aerobic plate, Vibrio count and MPN total coliforms) indicated the culturing practices adhere to the standards for shellfish sanitation. Total coliforms and other bacteria found in the Abalone samples also complied with microbiological guidelines for seafood products. The Determination Of Serum Copper And Zinc Concentrations In Thoroughbred Foals And Their Dams After Parturition, Achara Tawatsin, Panumas Ruantongdee, Prachak Poomvises

Serum copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) concentrations in 5-35 thoroughbred foals and their dams during first 24 weeks after parturition were determined. Mean serum Cu in foals increased significantly (p < 0.01) with age, from 10.4±1.1 μmol/l at week 1 to 25.9±0.8 μmol/l at week 24, whereas those in mares decreased significantly p < 0.05, from 26.2±1.3 μmol/l at week 1 to 22.0±0.5 μmol/l at week 24 after parturition. There was a large negative correlation between the mean serum Cu concentrations in foals and their dams (r = -0.86, p < 0.01). Serum Zn concentrations in both foals and mares on the other hand, gradually decreased after parturition, ranging from and 17.7±0.3 μmol/l at week-1 to 13.8±0.5 μmol/l at week 24, in foals and from 16.2±1.2 μmol/l at week 1 to 14.4±0.5 μmol/l at week 24 in mares. The correlation coefficient between the mean serum Zn concentrations in foals and their mares was high (r = 0.895, p < 0.01).

The treatment of chicken caecal coccidiosis with sulfamonomethoxine, at a concentration of 0.05 % in drinking water for 3 days, was performed on different days post oocyst inoculation.162 chickens were divided into 6 groups, 3 cages per group with 9 chicken each group. Chickens in groups 1-5 obtained 7x104 oocysts of Eimeria tenella, via a stomach tube. Chickens in group 1, 2 and 3 were treated on days 1-3, 2-4 and 3-5 post inoculation respectively. Commercial fishery for abalone in Thailand are presently unfamiliarity of their biology. This report describes the basis biology of abalone, development of abalone culture in tropical regions; selection and management of broodstock, in tank spawning, rearing of larvae through grow-out culture of advanced juveniles, to meet the requirement of consumers' seafood standard.

The objective of this review is to update information concerning the function of seminal plasma on the pig reproductive system, as well as its importance in artificial insemination (AI). It has been shown that seminal plasma advances ovulation in gilts by an average time of 10-14 hours, improves sperm motility, sustaines sperm viability during uterine transport, suppresses immune activities (chemotaxis of neutrophils), improved sperm transport, improves fertilisation rate, improves litter size in gilts and indirectly enhances fertility. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of prophylactic near-infrared light therapy from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in pediatric bone marrow transplant (BMT) recipients.

Background Data: Oral mucositis (OM) is a frequent side effect of chemotherapy that leads to increased morbidity. Near-infrared light has been shown to produce biostimulatory effects in tissues, and previous results using near-infrared lasers have shown improvement in OM indices. However, LEDs may hold greater potential for clinical applications.

Thauera sp. strain MZ1T is a floc-forming bacterium isolated from the wastewater treatment plant of Eastman Chemical Company. Its overabundance in that system in the form of zoogloeal clusters was positively correlated to episodes of poor dewatering of activated sludge (Lajoie 2000). The specific cause of this problem was thought to be due to the production of large quantities of hydrophilic exopolysaccharide (EPS) by MZ1T, which entraps water in the form of a hydrated gel, and results in a sludge that is resistant to mechanical dewatering.

This field study examined the influence of moderate intensity training on gait patterns and work capacity of individauls with fibromyalgia syndrome (FS). FS is a chronic condition of unknown etiology, characterized by muscle tenderness, pain and stiffness and often accompanied by depression and fatigue which seems to occur primarily in middle aged females. There is no known cure for FS but treatment often includes a prescription of mild exercise. Although public housing is typically associated with high crime rates, little research has been done on fear of crime or violent victimization experiences among public housing residents. Moreover, there are few studies that look specifically at women’s fear of crime or violent victimization experiences in public housing, despite the fact that women constitute the majority of public housing residents. These issues were examined in the present study through interviews with female public housing residents in Camden, New Jersey (NJ).
