In recent years the translocation and release into the wild of wild-caught and captive-bred wild animals (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish) has become a common practice, ostensibly for rehabilitation or conservation purposes. These wild animals comprise many varied taxa and the objectives of translocation and release may include:
(1) reintroducing a species that has become extinct in its natural range;
(2) restocking or reinforcing a population which has become depleted; and
(3) rehabilitating wild animals and birds which have been illegally captured and subsequently confiscated by Customs or national wildlife authorities. Welfare organizations also receive sick and injured wild …

Voltage-gated K(+) channels of the Kv3 subfamily have unusual electrophysiological properties, including activation at very depolarized voltages (positive to -10 mV) and very fast deactivation rates, suggesting special roles in neuronal excitability. In the brain, Kv3 channels are prominently expressed in select neuronal populations, which include fast-spiking (FS) GABAergic interneurons of the neocortex, hippocampus, and caudate, as well as other high-frequency firing neurons. Although evidence points to a key role in high-frequency firing, a definitive understanding of the function of these channels has been hampered by a lack of selective pharmacological tools. Biofilms are complex communities of microorganisms attached to surfaces or associated with interfaces. Despite the focus of modern microbiology research on pure culture, planktonic (free-swimming) bacteria, it is now widely recognized that most bacteria found in natural, clinical, and industrial settings persist in association with surfaces. Furthermore, these microbial communities are often composed of multiple species that interact with each other and their environment. The determination of biofilm architecture, particularly the spatial arrangement of microcolonies (clusters of cells) relative to one another, has profound implications for the function of these complex communities. A possible cause for root canal failure is the persistence of bacteria that have colonized dentinal tubules. To reduce this risk and, if possible, to also shorten the time consuming endodontic therapy, new equipment and materials are constantly being introduced. The aim of the present investigation was to study the effect of disinfection of dentinal tubules by intracanal laser irradiation using an in vitro model. The groups irradiated by various lasers were compared with calcium hydroxide, a material frequently used as intracanal medication between appointments. Cytoplasmic Filament-Deficient Mutant Of Treponema Denticola Has Pleiotropic Defects, Jacques Izard, William A. Samsonoff, Ronald J. Limberger

In Treponema denticola, a ribbon-like structure of cytoplasmic filaments spans the cytoplasm at all stages of the cell division process. Insertional inactivation was used as a first step to determine the function of the cytoplasmic filaments. A suicide plasmid was constructed that contained part of cfpA and a nonpolar erythromycin resistance cassette (ermF and ermAM) inserted near the beginning of the gene. The plasmid was electroporated into T. denticola, and double-crossover recombinants which had the chromosomal copy of cfpA insertionally inactivated were selected. Nucleotide sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of Brazilian bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) field isolates identified four viruses belonging to the genotype 2. Comparison of 5’ UTR sequences from these isolates to those of North American BVDV type 2 revealed genomic variations that correlated with the geographic origins of the isolates. Two of the Brazilian type 2 viruses were isolated from clinical cases of gastroenteric/respiratory disease and two were isolated from healthy bovine fetuses. This issue brief examines Medicare+Choice (M+C) plan participation, benefit coverage, and enrollment and the factors that have contributed to plans' decisions to participate in or withdraw from certain markets. In addition, the issue brief explores what has been happening to M+C enrollees in terms of costs, benefits, and continuity of care. Lastly, the issue brief examines the reasons that alternative plan options — such as preferred provider organizations (PPOs) and provider-sponsored organizations (PSOs) — have not taken hold. Legislative proposals that might affect the future of M+C are also discussed.

Carotid cavernous sinus fistula is an uncommon complication of craniocervical trauma which is usually associated with a skull base, frontal or midface fractures; besides it may also be a spontaneous phenomenon of a congenital, degenerative or iatrogenic origin. The blood shunts from either internal or external carotid arteries to the cavernous sinus resulting the blurred vision, ophthalmoparesis, pulsating exophthalmos, glaucoma, ocular ischemic syndrome, orbital headache and periorbital pain. The diagnosis is made by clinical features and radiography for differentiating from superior orbital fissure syndrome, orbital apex syndrome, retrobulbar hematoma and cavernous sinus thrombosis. ชายไทยอายุ 16 ปี ป่วยเป็นโรคท่อน้ำดีตีบตันและมีอาการตับแข็งในระยะสุดท้ายของโรคตับ และจําเป็นต้องรับการผ่าตัดเปลี่ยนตับ ส่งมาที่โรงพยาบาลคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัยเพื่อรับการตรวจพิเคราะห์สภาพช่องปาก และรับบริการทันตกรรม โดยเน้นควบคุมการเกิดแผ่นคราบจุลินทรีย์และป้องกันฟันผุด้วย ก่อนที่จะผ่าตัดเปลี่ยนตับ ทั้งนี้เนื่องจากผู้ป่วยต้องได้รับยากดภูมิต้านทานเป็นเวลานานทําให้อัตราเสี่ยงต่อการติดเชื้อ เพิ่มขึ้น การรักษาเสร็จสมบูรณ์ใช้เวลาทั้งสิ้นประมาณ 2 เดือน ผลการรักษาเป็นที่น่าพอใจ ผู้ป่วยรายนี้มีสภาพช่องปากที่เปลี่ยนแปลงสัมพันธ์กับโรคนี้ ปัญหาทางการแพทย์ของผู้ป่วยเกี่ยวกับการแข็งตัวของเลือด ข้อบ่งชี้การใช้ยาปฏิชีวนะ เพื่อป้องกันตลอดจนยาที่มีผลทําลายตับ ซึ่งทั้งหมดนี้อาจเกิดปัญหากับการรักษาทางทันตกรรมได้หากไม่ได้ป้องกัน และทราบวิธีแก้ไขปัญหาล่วงหน้าโดยปรึกษากับแพทย์ผู้ทําการรักษาอย่างใกล้ชิด การดูแลรักษาทางทันตกรรมใน ผู้ป่วยที่รอการเปลี่ยนตับมีความสําคัญอย่างยิ่ง เพื่อให้ผลการรักษาและคุณภาพชีวิตหลังการเปลี่ยนตับดียิ่งขึ้น และป้องกันโรคแทรกซ้อนที่อาจเกิดขึ้นหลังการเปลี่ยนตับ

Verruciform xanthoma is a rare, benign entity which preferentially affects the oral mucosa than any other tissue. The most frequent site of involvement is the gingiva. It affects mostly the middleaged person with a predilection for male gender. Clinically, verruciform xanthoma appears as papillary or verrucous, flat or slightly raised lesions. Aggregates of lipid-laden foam cells confined to the connective tissue papillae between epithelial rete ridges in association with papillary or verrucous epithelial hyperplasia are the histolopathologic hallmark of this lesion. These foam cells are actually of macrophage/monocyte lineage. The histopathological distinction of verruciform xanthoma from other lesions, which it …

วัตถุประสงค์ของบทความนี้เพื่ออธิบายถึงความสําคัญของความแข็งแรงของครอบและสะพานฟันชั่วคราว ซึ่งเป็นที่ทราบกันว่าครอบฟันและสะพานฟันที่ดีสามารถรักษาอวัยวะปริทันต์ให้อยู่ในสภาพดี และใช้บดเคี้ยวได้ วัสดุที่ใช้ทํามีหลายชนิดได้แก่ โลหะ พลาสติก และคอมโพสิตเรซิน ซึ่งการเลือกใช้ก็ขึ้นอยู่กับหลายปัจจัย ได้แก่ การใช้งาน ระยะเวลาในการใส่ แรงที่กัด ตําแหน่งของครอบและสะพานฟัน ช่วงเวลาในการใช้งาน ฯลฯ ในกรณีที่จําเป็นต้องใช้งานในระยะเวลาที่ยาวนาน หรือ ต้องรับแรงที่มากกว่าปกติ ครอบและสะพานฟันนั้นจําเป็นต้องเสริมความแข็งแรงแก่วัสดุที่ใช้ทําด้วยเส้นใยโพลีเอทิลีนหรือเส้นใยแก้ว เพื่อเพิ่มความแข็งแรงและต้านการแตกหักจะช่วยป้องกันไม่ให้เกิดความล้มเหลวของครอบและสะพานฟันชั่วคราว

Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate the phenotype of the mononuclear and the multinucleated cells in the oral giant cell fibroma. Materials and methods The study was performed in thirty-one cases of the oral giant cell fibroma. The surgical specimens of the lesions were stained with a panel of antibodies using indirect immunoperoxidase technique. Results The mononuclear and multinucleated giant cells of the giant cell fibroma showed positive staining by antibodies against vimentin and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) while demonstrating negative staining by antibodies against S-100 antigen, leukocyte common antigen (LCA), macrophage marker (LNS), smooth muscle …

รายงานกล่าวถึงฟันกรามบนซี่ที่สองของผู้ป่วยที่เข้ามารับการรักษารากฟัน เป็นฟันกรามบนสี่ราก โดยเป็นรากฟันด้านเพดานปากสองราก และรากฟันด้านแก้มสองราก ซึ่งการมีจํานวนรากฟันด้านเพดานปากมากกว่าปกติเป็นลักษณะที่พบได้น้อยที่สุดของฟันกรามบน พื้นของโพรงในตัวฟันมีลักษณะเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยม มีรูเปิดเข้าสู่คลองรากฟันอยู่ที่มุมทั้งสี่ การพิจารณาภาพรังสีก่อนการรักษาเป็นสิ่งสําคัญ เนื่องจากสามารถเห็นลักษณะผิดปกติของรากฟันได้ก่อนการรักษา การค้นหาและรักษารากฟันได้ครบทุกคลองรากฟันเป็นสิ่งหนึ่งที่ทําให้การรักษารากฟัน ประสบความสําเร็จ จากการติดตามผลการรักษาเป็นเวลา 2 ปี 6 เดือน พบว่าฟันอยู่ในสภาพใช้งานได้ดี ไม่มี พยาธิสภาพเกิดขึ้น
