Controversy On Prophylactic Oophorectomy, Utku Özcan, Didem Akyol, Selma Oransay, Murat Ekin, Tayfun Güngör, Oya Gökmen

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The merits of prophylactic oophorectomy at the time of hysterectomy have been debated for many years. The most compelling argument for prophylactic removal of the ovaries has always been the prevention of ovarian cancer (2). Prophylactic oophorectomy has advantages and disadvantages. The actual incidence of cancer in retained ovaries is difficult to estimate. The advantages of prophylactic oophorectomy include the prevention of ovarian cancer, the alleviation of symptoms from residual ovary syndrome and the elimination of the need for reoperation for adnexal disease (2). Disadvantages include surgical castration, which results in the need for hormone replacement, and changes in self-image …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

This study was undertaken to examine the laminar distribution of spinotelencephalic tract neurons in the rat, by means of retrograde fluorescent labelling and to estimate the role of NADPH-diaphorase-reactive spinal cells as sources of spino-supraspinal pathways in the rat. The localization, size and shape of some neurons were similar in both labelling methods. Cells were mostly multipolar in the medial part of nucl. proprius, and fusiform and spindle-shaped in lamina I and X. It is suggested that some of the NADPH-d (+) neurons in the deep dorsal horn and lamina X are sources of a spino-supraspinal pathway to nucleus accumbens …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

One of the most important obstacles in renal transplantation is the rejection phenomenon. In spite of the developments in medical technology and immunology, early diagnosis of rejection and specific immunosuppression of the immune attack against the graft have not yet been totally accomplished. Lymphocyte cross-matching (LCM), a test to detect the presence of preformed antibodies in the donor against the recipient, is a practical and cheap method and is performed at almost all renal transplantation centers before transplantation. In this study, we searched for the relation between the posttransplant LCM status and graft survival. LCM was positive in 7 patients …

ESWL is an effective and noninvasive method of treatment for patients with urinary stones. However, especially in the treatment of larger stones impact of the small stone particles in the lower ureter (steinstrasse) is a serious complication that affects the result of the procedure. If the renal unit has not been catheterized before the ESWL procedure, removal of these particles by open surgical or endoscopic intervention within a very short time is mandatory. A total of 1576 renal unit were treated by ESWL with the Dornier MPL 9000 lithotripter from April 1991 to April 1995. Steinstrasse was observved in 81 …

The effect of zinc salts is defined by several studies. The aim of this study is to investigate how the short period toothbrushing with equal volumes of a toothpaste containing 0.75% zinccitrate effects the salivary zinc levels over a period of 7 hours. In our study a significant increase in zinc measurements was observed 5 minutes after toothbrushing. Although 7 th hour measurements were higher than 0 hour measurements; these values were found approximately similar to intial control measurements. This result shows that the amount of zinc passed by toothpaste to saliva completely disappeared at the end of 7 th …

The Auricular Cartilage Graft Fixation With Butyl2-Cyanocrylate, Fehmi Döner, İbrahim Sari, Aziz Öztürk, R. Murat Karaşen, Muharrem Bi̇ti̇ren, Yavuz Sütbeyaz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Cartilage grafts are widely used in maxillo-facial reconstruction operations. There are some difficulties of conventional suture techniques in these operations such as long operation time, mobilization, shifting, and implantation or fixation of small pieces of cartilage. Therefore the advantages of a tissue adhesive over conventional suture techniques became evident in these operations. Butyl 2-Cyanoacrylate (B2-CA) is one of the least histotoxic cyanoacrylate derivatives and is used as a tissue adhesive. In this study, B2-CA was compared with conventional suture techniques in securing rabbit auricular cartilage autografts. Sutures were used in the left control ears and B2-CA was used in the …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Cryoglobulinemia has been reported rarely to cause false elevation in platelet and/or leukocyte counts due to temperature-dependent protein precipitates that interpreted as blood cells at room temperature. Upon heating to 37°C, these blood counts decrease to normal levels as cryoproteins dissolve. Here, we report two cases with this rare phenomenon that may lead to inappropriate investigations in clinical practice and have diagnostic significance when kept in mind.

Effects Of The N-Ras Oncogene On The Expression Of Other Cellular Genes In Co25 Myoblast Cells, Hülya Zeyti̇noğlu, Ian Gibson

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The effects of the N- ras oncogene on the transcription levels of c- myc, p53, c-K-ras and b-actin genes have been investigated by Northern blotting in a cell line which normally differentiates into myotubes. Treatment of cells with dexamethasone activates N- ras gene, then cells proliferate and form foci. The transcription level of c- myc gene was generally high during transformation whereas c-K- ras mRNAs levels were high during differentiation. Following induction of the N- ras oncogene, the level of c-myc mRNA first decreased in two days and then increased in three and four days. During differentiation, c-K- ras mRNA …

The Validity Of Mahmood Scoring System Inmeningiomas, Sülen Sarioglu, M Serefettin Canda, Tülay Canda, Fulya Çakalağaoğlu, Nagihan Yalçin

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Meningiomas are well known for their diverse histological apperance. Although generally considered benign, their behaviour is unpredictable and characterized by frequent recurrences. Histopathological features associated with aggressive behaviour have been described, but even the World Health Organization (WHO) grading system provides broad criteria for malignancy. Mahmood et al. described a scoring system, based on 6 histopathological features, establishing objective criteria. In this study, 73 specimens from 61 cases which were diagnosed as meningioma have been reviewed and scored by the criteria described by Mahmood et al. in order to search for the availability of the application of the system.
