Can Preoperative Modified Systemic Inflammation Score (Msis) Be Used To Predictmalignancy In Persistent Nondiagnostic Thyroid Nodules?, Hakan Ataş, Bi̇rol Korukluoğlu, Bülent Çomçali, Neşe Yakşi̇, Bariş Saylam, Mesut Tez

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Despite the use of ultrasound guidance, a significant part of thyroid biopsies are nondiagnostic (ND). We aimed to investigate the utility of the preoperative modified systemic inflammation score (mSIS) to predict malignancies in patients with persistent ND thyroid nodules (TNs). Materials and methods: Records of 924 patients underwent thyroidectomy between September 2016 and May 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. The calculation of mSIS was as follows: mSIS 0 [patients with albumin (ALB) ≥ 4.0 g/dL and lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR) ≥ 3.4], mSIS 1 [ALB < 4.0 g/dL or LMR < 3.4], and mSIS 2 [ALB < 4.0 g/dL and LMR < 3.4]. Results: One hundred and thirty-six patients were included in the study. Of the patients with a median age of 49 (21-81) years, 26 (19.1%) were male, and 110 (80.9%) were female. Besides low lymphocyte count (P = 0.03), and ALB levels (P < 0.01), higher BMI (P = 0.02) were also associated with malignancy. In patients classified as mSIS 2, 1 and 0; malignancy rates were 100%, 25.8%, and 16.1%, respectively. The association between preoperative mSIS and thyroid malignancies was statistically significant (P < 0.01). Conclusion: We recommend that when patients with persistent ND TNs are assigned to mSIS 2 or 1, surgery should not be delayed due to the risk of malignancy.

Materials and methods: In total, 47 previously diagnosed with non-hypertensive acromegaly patients and 48 control subjects were included in the study. ECG and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) were performed for each participant. Acromegaly patients were divided into two groups according to the fQRS formation on the ECG. Left ventricular wall thicknesses, and left atrial diameter (LAD), left ventricular …

Background/aim: A correlation between vitamin D deficiency and primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) has already been described. The limited data has been reported regarding the pathological relevance of vitamin D in primary Sjögren's syndrome. In this study, the peripheral blood mononuclear cells were cocultured with 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 to determine the modulatory effect of vitamin D3 on T and B lymphocyte phenotypes in pSS. Materials and methods: Venous blood samples were collected from 11 patients in the treatment phase and 9 drug-naive pSS patients. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were isolated and separately cultured in the presence and absence of 1,25- dihydroxyvitamin …

Background/aim: A member of the adipokine family, omentin-1 is selectively secreted from visceral fat tissue and the omentum. It has been shown that omentin-1 is involved in the pathogenesis of certain diseases and can be used as a prognostic marker. This study first investigated the prognostic significance of omentin-1 in surgical intensive care patients. In addition, the relationship between omentin-1 and laboratory and clinical parameters commonly used in intensive care units (ICUs) was evaluated. Materials and methods: One hundred and fifty-four patients hospitalized in the surgical ICU were included in the study. Blood samples for omentin-1 were collected from the …

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the elasticity of the optic nerve (ON) and retinal-choroid-sclera complex (RCSC) in dogs with healthy eyes and secondary glaucoma using ARFI elastography. ARFI elastography was performed on normal eyes (n = 25) and affected by glaucoma (n = 25). The mean values of shear wave velocity (SWV) of the ON and RCSC were compared between groups by the Student?s t-test. The correlation between elastography measurements of the ON and RCSC and the intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured. The SWV of the optic nerve in glaucomatous eyes (4.77 ± 1.59 m/s) …
