Evaluation Of Second-Look Transurethral Resection In The Management Of Superficial Bladder Tumors, Mahmoud Mahdy, Mohamed Badreldin, Shady M. Salem, Tarek M. A. Baky

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objectives The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of second-look transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) in the management of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Background Bladder cancer is the ninth most common cancer diagnosis worldwide. Second-look TURBT ensures adequate evaluation of the muscularis propria while detecting and treating residual tumors. Patients and methods Thirty-one NMIBC patients underwent a second-look TURBT 2 weeks after the initial TURBT. The procedures carried out included reassessment of the bladder for the detection of residual lesions after initial resection, and the resection of the base of the previous resection site for …

Background/aim: We aimed to study polymorphisms of the B7-H4 gene in order to evaluate a possible association in urothelial carcinoma, as it is highly expressed in cancer tissues. Materials and methods: In this study B7-H4 gene rs10754339, rs10801935, and rs3738414 SNPs were studied by PCR-RFLP method in paraffin-embedded tumor specimens from 62 urothelial carcinoma patients and in a control group including 30 patients without bladder cancer. Results: We detected that the rs10754339 polymorphism was more frequent in the cancer patients when compared with the control group (P < 0.05). Only the rs3738414 polymorphism showed a statistically significant difference in frequency between pathologic diagnostic groups. Conclusion: The rs10754339 AA genotype distribution was found to have a higher frequency whereas the rs3738414 AG genotype distribution was lower in the bladder cancer group (P < 0.05). None of the genotype distributions showed a significant difference from the control group for the rs10801935 polymorphism. We conclude that B7-H4 has the potential to be a useful prognostic marker in urothelial carcinoma.

Neutrophil-To-Lymphocyte Ratio Is Elevated In Recurringnonmuscle Invasive Bladder Cancer, Emrah Yürük, Theodore Robert Saitz, Serkan Gönültaş, Ege Can Şerefoğlu, Ahmet Yaser Müslümanoğlu Jan 2017

Neutrophil-To-Lymphocyte Ratio Is Elevated In Recurringnonmuscle Invasive Bladder Cancer, Emrah Yürük, Theodore Robert Saitz, Serkan Gönültaş, Ege Can Şerefoğlu, Ahmet Yaser Müslümanoğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Although it has been shown that the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) may predict the progression of nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), its association with the recurrence of NMIBC has been poorly studied. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between NLR and disease recurrence in patients with NMIBC. Materials and methods: The medical records of 428 consecutive initially diagnosed NMIBC patients who underwent transurethral resection between January 2010 and July 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients without a preoperative NLR (n = 6), without a minimum of 6 months of follow-up (n = 56), who were lost to …
