Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

My first involvement with JCIPE programs was with the Interprofessional Palliative Care (IPC) program. Here, I was able to meet diverse students across Jefferson from Couple and Family Therapy, Medicine, Nursing, Physical Therapy, and more. Together, we addressed case studies with our various backgrounds and learned how to build upon each other’s strengths as a precursor to our future in the field. Especially coming from a Nursing background and now shifting towards medicine, it was a great experience to apply my knowledge and intertwine it with other fields.

Since then, I have immersed myself with research relating to the Health …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

In June 2021, the Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) team was invited by JCIPE to pilot a new series of interprofessional sessions for primary care teams utilizing the ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes). This model has been utilized and researched worldwide to help with disseminating information across various subject matters within healthcare, with the goal of decreasing health disparities. Through use of subject matter experts, brief didactic education, and case consultations, communities of learners come together to enhance patient care and health outcomes.

The IBH team, which consists of clinicians from behavioral health, primary care, nutrition, occupational therapy, psychiatry, pharmacy, …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Background

Interprofessional education (IPE) has become an increasingly necessary component of healthcare and health science curricula (Institute of Medicine, 2015; World Health Organization, 2010). However, the longitudinal impact of IPE and students’ ability to transfer knowledge and skills from the classroom to the workplace remains unknown (Breitbach et al., 2020). Training future healthcare providers (i.e., physical therapists, occupational therapists, exercise scientists) to work in interprofessional (IP) teams should arguably begin at the undergraduate (UG) level, rather than graduate level, in order to improve effective translation of skills to the workplace (Breitbach et al., 2020; Cooper et al., 2001; Murdoch et …

In support of Thomas Jefferson University’s effort to be on the cutting edge of care, JCIPE (Jefferson Center for Interprofessional Practice & Education) supports educational programs that focus on understanding and addressing health disparities. Team Care Planning (TCP) is an educational simulation experience where teams of students from different professions collaborate with each other, and interact with standardized patients, to create a care plan. The initial case developed for TCP involves an interprofessional student team developing a discharge plan for an older adult who was hospitalized after a stroke. The interprofessional student team meets with the patient and her adult …

“Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” – Martin Luther King

Health outcomes and life expectancy in the United States of America differ substantially based on race. For example, people of color are more likely to die of cardiovascular disease or stroke; more likely to have diabetes; and have higher infant and maternal mortality rates as compared to their white counterparts (Frieden, 2013). Achieving health equity is a key focus of Healthy People 2030 (HHS, 2013), which prioritizes addressing social determinants of health, including access to timely, high-quality healthcare and effective …

Dr. John E. Lewis, Jr., Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine, presented the keynote at the 2022-23 J-SICCC Kick-Off event, exploring the systemic racism fueling the health disparities in our society in a raw, real, and electrifying way. I sat down with Dr. Lewis to continue the conversation. Through his sharing, Dr. Lewis helps us understand our own journeys, what drives us, and how we can improve our healthcare teams and patient interactions. This interview dives deeper into the roots of our disconnections to find the only treatment that will work to make the …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Interprofessional (IP) collaborative practice is believed to be an essential component of healthcare system transformation via the "Quadruple Aim" (IPEC. 2016) IP simulations provide invaluable opportunities for learners to practice, discuss, and improve teamwork and communication skills for clinical situations (Thistlethwaite, 2012). Furthermore, IP simulations help students gain a nuanced understanding of, and appreciation for, the roles and responsibilities of colleagues from different professions (Thistlethwaite, 2012). As a result, students increase their understanding of how practice is enhanced as they gain additional perspectives on care and improve their ability to engage in effective IP teamwork (IPEC, 2016). IP simulations allow …

As a Jefferson College of Nursing student (JCN), I had the opportunity to be involved in several JCIPE initiatives, including the Jefferson Student lnterprofessional Complex Care Collaborative program (J-SICCC, formerly Student Hotspotting) and Team Simulation & Fearlessness Education (TeamSAFE). As a member of J-SICCC, I worked with an interprofessional team of students to support a patient with complex social and healthcare needs. The TeamSAFE training was incorporated within the JCN curriculum, and after participating as a student I was able to volunteer as a co-facilitator. In addition, I had the chance to work with one of the JCN faculty members, …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

I became involved with JCIPE in 2016 as a faculty advisor to the one Jefferson Student lnterprofessional Complex Care Collaborative program (J-SICCC, formerly Student Hotspotting) team participating from Thomas Jefferson University. I found the students (medicine, nursing, OT, pharmacy, and two combined MD/PhDs) very engaged and enthusiastic. They took initiative and worked hard to establish connections with their patients. At some point during the year, they began meeting regularly at Scott Library at the end of the day. I joined them when I could, and provided them with direction as they tried to help their patients. It was rewarding to …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

I like to think of myself as an internal champion for improving the quality and safety of medical care that we deliver at Jefferson. A central tenet of our work together at the bedside is that care can never be error free because we're working with people. Our goal should always be to make care harm free.

As a result of my dedication to this notion of harm free care, I would like to review some key milestones in my 30 years as a faculty member and connect the dots between my work and certain events. Here is the punch …

We are excited to share with you the summer 2023 edition of our newsletter! As the weather warms, and we celebrate commencements, we reflect upon our accomplishments in the face of many challenges. JCIPE is thankful for our 140 faculty, staff, resident, and student volunteer facilitators who made our student programming possible over the past year. We could not advance team-based care without their support. Additionally, after three years of largely virtual programming, we are thrilled to have brought all of our in-person simulations back to campus during the 2022-2023 academic year. JCIPE said goodbye to some longtime faculty and …

JCIPE’s Interprofessional Palliative Care Program is a semester-long learning collaborative in which small interprofessional student teams learn about the team-based provision of palliative care for persons with serious illness and at the end of life. Using the National Consensus Project’s Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care as a framework, teams work collaboratively through case-based discussions and presentations. Additionally, participants have an opportunity to observe Jefferson’s Palliative Care Team’s interdisciplinary rounds and to shadow a Jefferson palliative care provider.

College students who desire a career in the health professions, begin their discovery of professional scope through their undergraduate programs. Currently, there lacks uniformity in undergraduate curricula in knowledge, skills and behaviors necessary for collaborative practice in future healthcare systems (Aldriwesh et al., 2022).

We’re so excited to share this Spring/ Summer edition of our newsletter! As the academic year comes to a close, we look back on another year filled with ups and downs, incredible accomplishments and ongoing challenges. Life during the COVID-19 pandemic has changed. Relative widespread vaccination and declining mortality and hospitalization rates have allowed a slow return to prior routines and activities for many. Yet infection rates are still on the rise as we continue to mourn the lives lost to COVID in the U.S. and globally, and grapple with its prolonged impact. For many of us, COVID has highlighted …
